Making an effort to wear sun protection...

Are you careful when you are out in the sun i.e. do you wear sun cream, shades, a hat etc. I know a lot of people that do not wear sun cream because they want to have a strong tan but this is really dangerous as it can bring on premature sun damage and in the worst case, skin cancer.

No, not nearly as careful as i should be. I try to remind my daughter to put protection on my grandson. Need to find some way to get into the habit. It is so very important and so easy to forget. I set the tube by the door, have it in my day pack, etc. and still forget. Grrrr.

It is something that can easily be forgotten. I have been burnt so badly before though that I shall definitely never forget to put it on!

It is only at this stage of my life that I had made a conscious effort to put sunscreen when I go out. It helps to keep our skin protected. It is common knowledge that the sun's harmful rays are the major determinant of aging. It is good to always wear sun protection.

If you always protect your skin, it's not good. I think sometimes we should sun-bath.

It is always good to protect yes. We can still have the benefits of the sun's rays by wearing the correct factor of sun protection.

Hi there UK_Shree. I myself try to wear sunscreen on my face at least. If I am going to be out for a long period of time however, I will put the sunscreen on all exposed areas. If I am going swimming, I will put my sunscreen on as soon as I put my suit on. Before I put my cover up on and leave the house. I have had a severe sunburn in the past, and it is not enjoyable at all. I guess that is why I am extra cautious.

That sounds sensible. Only someone who has suffered sun burn in the past knows how painful it is.

Yes we are very careful in the sun as I am red headed and fairskinned.I can tell you there is nothing worse than the pain of sunburn.Suncream lotion is relatively new.We used to treat the symtoms of sunburn with calamine lotion.So I used to stay covered all summer.My friend had skin cancer on her face but they cured that for her.We all worked on the fields around here so I expect a few more will get something or other.Quite a few people round here have very wrinkled skin through years out in the sun.I always wear,sunglasses and cotton clothes and sun block.I have not fared better than most thank goodness.

Calamine lotion is a great way to relieve the symptoms of sun burn but unfortunately it does little to protect. I sometimes even use factor 50+ to try and minimise the damage as my skin is really sensitive too.

I wear sunscreen everyday on my face. It is very important to do so especially if your have fairer type skin like mine. Mine would be more likly to have sun damage than someone with darker skin.

You would probably be better wearing some sort of protection whenever you are exposed to strong sunlight.

I don't put on sun screen if I'm leaving the house for a little while...but say if I'm planning on going to the pool or the beach I'll put on some sun screen but nothing more than 15 spf. I don't really get burnt. I never wear hats because I don't like them but sometimes I'll wear a visor and very rarely sun glasses, basically I wear them only when I'm driving.

You are lucky that you do not tend to get burnt. It is definitely a good thing to wear protection when bathing in the sun.

i use to play outside for a couple hours everyday, but now that im older and realize the risk that i take everytime, ive made the effort to put on sunblock whenever im outside for long periods of time. i dont want to develop more problems later on in life. such a small effort now can prevent so much.

Not me. I never wear sun screen and don't make any effort to cover my skin. My whole family is that way. We have never had any skin cancer and my parents are in their mid-80's. That's not to say that I won't get it but I think all this stuff about skin cancer and other health "threats" are way overblown. Of course, it can't hurt to cover up some but the sun gives you vitamin D. 15 minutes of sun on your skin somewhere every day improves a person's mood and prevents depression. We are protecting ourselves so much we barely have lives anymore.

I do see what you mean and in some aspects, there can be too much protection. In terms of the sun however it is known to have harmful UV rays. 15 mins for vitamin D is a good thing, but 2 hours to get roasted is not.

I am one of those people who wants to tan when I'm in the sun. The only time I'll wear sun screen is when I don't want to burn, or when I've already burned and I'm trying to protect the sensative skin. I'll put sun screen on my kids, but not myself. I'm not really that concerned about it.

If you are concerned about the kids you should be about yourself too!

I have been rethinking sunscreen, I now try to get at least 15 mins every other day for Vit D purposes, I am never out much and the rest of the time I wear sunscreen.

A bit of sun is a good thing as long as you control how long you are exposed to it.

I don't usually wear sun screen; or if I do it must have a very small amount of SPF in it (like..8 SPF for example is what I usually use when outdoors.) It's usually for the tanning reason, but also because I don't burn very easily, and it just makes sense. *shrugs*

Well everyone does have different skin but it is still important to protect. It is a good thing you do use factor 8 at least.

it's really good suggestion. Because i just made a big mistake about it. before i lived in beijing. in summer it's very hot and most of days are sunny. So i usually had sun cream with over spf 15 and had umbrella when i went out. I didn't want to have dark color at all. however after i moved to the UK i found the uk has more days without sunshine, so i lost my patience to have sun cream. three weeks ago i was out to pick strawberry in a sunny day, i really enjoyed my country experience. but in the night i felt inchy in my back and neck. then i found i got sun burnt. I never thought the uk's sunshine can be so strong. now i have learnt from my lesson. i always have sun cream when i go out. As i heard it also can keep me young.

Yes we do have less sun in the UK but it can be just as damaging as anywhere else in the world when it shines!

i never used sun block before. for me i think it is not necessary. but my girlfriend has different view, she insisted to use sun block every time she go out, but of course not during night time.

Your girlfriend sounds very sensible - we all need protection of some sort from the harmful UV rays of the sun.

Though I am dark skinned I find that I react to over exposure in the sun pretty quickly. I did one of those facial skin assessment once and was told to ensure I wear a sun screen lotion. I tried maintaining that practice but the lotions so far are just too greasy even when they say none greasy. I do my scrubs and use my mask etc... but I apply nothing else to my face. I am yet to find a sun screen lotion that I like.

I never use to but the older I get the more I have been doing. I would never go to the beach now with out wearing sun screen. I don't do the hat thing yet though, but I would consider it now. I do wear a foundation every day now that has some sunscreen in it. And I usually where sun glasses to keep me from squinting and getting wrinkles around my eyes. If I know I will be out for a while I will had a little extra sunscrean if I am out in the winter time I will also wear sunscreen if I am going to be out for a while.

I never used to like waering sunglasses before but now I know how important they are. I usually carry sunscreen in my bag on very hot days when I am out.

i like to have tan skin in the summer but I still put on enough sun protection to protect my skin. I put on lotion before I go into the water and apply again when I get out of the water and apply again and again. Just to make sure I will not get sunburnt and reduce cancel possibility.

Hi UK_Shree, I live in a place with long HOT summers and never leave the house in daytime without a factor 25 on. Just walking about without it would leave me burnt. I always wear sunglasses too but they're prescription ones so can't do without them. I don't bother with a hat as don't walk around in it much and they mess my hair up. I do always plonk under my umberella on the beach though, but only after 5pm when the sun is past it's danger time. There is nothing worse though than seeing the hordes of tourists on the beach trying to pack a suntan into their two week break and turning crimson in the sun as if they are completely aware of the dangers. You can see the pain just waiting to happen. Consequently the locals are paler than the tourists as even the school children here are educated about staying out of the midday sun. As for the premature sun damage you can spot that as the skin turns to brown leather.
@UK_Shree (3603)

Well it sounds like you are very sensible about this. I think we all need to be educated a bit more about sun protection.

HI,yeah,now it is summer in my city,and the sunlight is very strong.I will bring an umbrella with me when I go out and wear some sun cream to protect my skin. I was ever uncareful about the sun damage two years ago when I lived in a city besides the sea,I walked out without any protection and thought about to enjoy the sunlight.But my skin got hurt quickly so that I had to take many methods to comfort it.And it is sad that there some sunburn kept there.It seems hardly to remove them from my skin. Sunlight is good,but sunburn is annoying.So I think it is better to take some protection when you out
@UK_Shree (3603)

Absolutely - I agree with what you say. It is always better to protect as long term damage can easily occur otherwise.
