I went to the grocery store on Monday to get all of the food that we would need for an entire week. My 2-year-old son absolutely loves cheese and I'm not a fan of processed cheese, so I decided to go with a one pound block of cheese from which I could cut pieces out of for him to eat. Fast forward to today. Paul asked for some cheese and I was so happy that I actually remembered to get some for him for a change. I get out my cheese slicer and the block of cheese. Open up the wrapper for the first time (expiration date December 4, 2009) only to find that the entire side of the cheese is molded. It absolutely disgusted me. So I end up sick to my stomach seeing what my hard earned money bought and with a 2-year-old kid crying because he saw the cheese and couldn't have any of it. Naturally, I'm going to be taking the whole block of cheese back to the grocery and asking for a refund (or another block of cheese). But in the mean time I was royally PO'd. Has this ever happened to you?

I had bought a cucumber once at the store and immediately after I bought it, I went home to cut it up for a salad I was making for dinner a couple hours later. The cucmber was almost clear on the inside-it was wrinkly on one side (which I did not notice at the store) and it was completely bad all the way through. I took it back right away and they allowed me to exchange it. How awful that your little guy couldn't get his snack. I have a 2 year old too who loves his cheese snacks, so I can imagine how your son felt, so disappointed not to be bale to eat it!

Yuck on the cucumber. I've luckily never had a problem with produce, but then I am very, very picky about the produce that I buy. As for myself, I'm almost thinking that I am going to just start buying American Cheese again. I've never ever had a problem with that except for the fact that I don't eat it.

My son loves both American cheese and string cheese. We very rarely buy blocks, we usually buy 2 pound bags of colby jack shredded cheese, and believe it or not, we use it up fast! I use cheese a lot with cooking and my husband puts cheese in his scrambled eggs for the kids for breakfast. Have you taken that cheese back to the store yet??

Yup, I've got my two dollars and fifty cents in my pocket now. They didn't want to give me my money back, wanted me to exchange for some more cheese, but I told them that wasn't good enough when I open a block of cheese and it is molded on one size. String cheese we like and get fairly frequently. American cheese the kids like but I don't. Actually I usually get the already shredded cheese but per a discussion on here from another girl, I decided I was going to try grating my own cheese and seeing if it went further. See where that got me, lol.

One of important things to take note before you decide to get some food is to check on the expiry date and the condition of the can, bottle, pack or whatever packaging that comes with it. Inspect them with a keen eye. If your can of tuna has some rust on the top, or it's dented, don't buy it. Consumer education is important. It will save you lots of inconvenience and money. Another thing is, keep all your receipts in a paper file so that you're able to access them easily.

That reminds me of something - I bought a few bottles of full-cream milk a month ago and stored them in the larder. I took one out one fine day and poured some into a bowl of cereals. It didn't taste quite right, but I thought it was just my tongue or the cereal. It wasn't sour, it had this slightly rough texture. Oh well, I drank it anyway. Then later when I washed the bottle, chunks of milk came off!! It looked like tofu.... oh, darn. The milk hasn't expired - I checked the date. The only other possible reason that I could think of is the way the bottles were stored. So I got rid of all the other bottles.

Oh I know not to buy the dented cans or any of that kind of stuff. I've always been very good with the nonperishables. And now, examining the wrapper from the cheese, it doesn't seem damaged at all to me. Who knows what happened.

Not with cheese, but I have bought milk only to open it up and find it spoiled. That is really upsetting because with 3 kids we go through a lot of milk around here. Also, just yesterday I bought some zuchinni from a store I should have know better since it was wrapped up, but I thought it had at least a few days of life in. I left it on the counter over night and was going to make zucchini bread today. Then I smelled this bad smell, it was the zucchini I just bought yesterday, it was all soft to the touch and smelled. I just threw it away, but I just bought it yesterday, it should not have gone bad that fast. That was a waste of money, I am not going to take it back because It just smelled so bad, I didn't want to mess with it, plus it was soft and leaky, and I was looking forward to staying in today as I have been having to run around for the last week, and just wanted a day to stay home and do my online stuff.

No, thankfully not. I've never opened someting new to have it have mold. It's happened with older stuff, because my mom never throws things out. If I were you, I'd take the money or buy another product from them. Perhaps, they don't store their cheese properly.

I really hope they will give me the money back. I've got to find the receipt, it's either in the car or in the house. Hope I didn't lose it.

Yes it hasn't happened in a while but it has in the past numerous times. When I'm getting ready to make baked mac and cheese and the cheese is moldy its quite agravating to say the least. Especially when you are looking forward to having a certain meal or a piece of cheese like your son wanted. I'm wondering if he cheese is being stamped the wrong expiration date.

That is definitely my first thought. And it really makes me leary of buying cheese at that particular store (or chain of stores) again. Luckily I don't typically do my grocery shopping there because they are typically more expensive, but I had lots of coupons this week and that is the store that will double coupons.

It got packed and it is going back to the store as soon as I can get there. I was right by the store earlier but we had school open house and the last thing I wanted to do was try to return warm cheese.

It was bread, not cheese. I was in a hurry and I grabbed some hamburger buns off the shelf. Got them home and opened them that same day and they were already moldy. Yuck!!!
