Ghost stories for bedtime?

I love to read and have been in the habit of reading every night before I fall asleep. Unless I'm dead tired, I will read for a little while after I crawl into bed at night. When we got back from vacation, I didn't have any books in the house to read - well, that were handy, we have some boxed up in the garage still that I can dig through - so I grabbed one of our "coffee table" books. I bought it a couple years ago from one of those book clubs, it was cheap and looked interesting. It's called "Real Ghosts, Restless Spirits, and Haunted Places" by Brad Steiger. It's about real haunted places and what people have experienced in them. I'm still in the very beginning, and it's EXTREMELY fascinating. But, I now find that after reading a bit I'm hearing all kinds of bumps and creaks in my house! I think I need to find a better book to read before I go to bed, and leave this one for when the lights are on!

Ghosts and haunted places are not nearly as scary as the realities of every day life. Personally, I find it comforting that there is an afterlife.

I'm fine with it too, but I'm pretty sure if I continued to read this book some of it might come true for me. I mean, I'm not a medium, but sometimes "unreal" stuff kinda gravitates to me. I just don't know if I want to deal with it right now so I've found some good fiction to read.

I do read horror books but not before bedtime. If I do that I might have trouble going to sleep as I know I can be very imaginative when it comes to creepy things. I can't sleep with the lights on, so darkness in my room will just aggravate the scary thoughts the story can bring. Better not dwell on on something I may not be able to handle.

I have ready scary stories before that have made me lie awake for a while, so I thought it best to get something else. Of course I get some scary novels to read to replace the scary "true" stories! But it's working!

When my younger sister visited me, many years ago, she did a similar thing, reading a book I happened to have, also from a book club. She was sleeping in a bedroom that was off to itself and she got really scared. The windows were down low and she just felt like someone would come in at any time. I had nightmares about a book, that was more of a suspense book, involving giant cockroaches once. It literally made me ill. Find something wonderful to read for tonight. It is such a good relaxing habit to have.

I bought some novels Saturday to read. They're still scary - but they're at least novels. I had started reading a series on vacation and these are the next two books. I'm doing much better with these already!
