Cannot hear a sound out of my computer so I had better get that Mac soon

My Compac Presario has three years to go before it gets to the six year life span - well it could be two and a half years until then but why go into details? Anyway I could only record something if I used the mike. I guess they were afraid of being sued by record producers if I recorded a song off the net. So when my head phone set got driven over by my husband's power chair with him in it, I thought what the heck, all I need to do is to unplug the headphone, throw it in the trash, and just use the speakers. Well there is still no sound. You know that carton of the person knocking his or her head on the Monitor with frustration? That's me? So what computer would you recommend to your worse enemy, besides the Compac Presario?

Worse enemy? From previous experience, I would have to say a Gateway for my worse enemy because where I used to work, my boss had a Gateway with a 3yr. warranty on it. 2nd year, it got zapped by lightning even though it was plugged into their powerstrip that was supposed to protect the computer from the surge damage. Well, after arguing on the phone with them for several months over it, she took the computer over to the Gateway store where she bought it and slammed it up against the wall of the store and told them they can have their piece of (^*&^*&^ back and that she was contacting her lawyer about it. Well, she won the case hands-down but will never buy their products again. I won't either cause I've had it with them as well after what all my boss and I went through.

It was a desktop that my boss had. lol Figures! Everyone has their own horror stories with the various manufacturers so it's hard to tell which ones truly are nightmares.

A friend of a friend of mine has a Gateway and her grandchildren used to pill things on it and what happened is if she had to turn it off, it took hours for it to turn on again. It is a miracle it ever survived. Your boss was a cheapskate because if he had gotten a decent surge protector and make sure the electric plug the power bar was in was grounded, he would not have had any problem. That may have been the reason why Gateway did not want to deal with him. Part of the problem was his own carelessness.

I am sorry to hear that you are having that trouble with it. I have to say that I had alot of trouble with Dell computers. They are high dollar but they sure aren't worth it. I guess. I would recommend one of those to my worse enemy.

I guess you have to be a geek like my older son to use them. They were all right when they first started, but they have gone downhill. I think it is when the company decided that if you just used it for email, it did not matter how well they made it.

well, the Dell I bought on the recommendation of my geek - who was working at Dell at the time, but said that Dell or Gateway were basically interchangeable at the time, lasted from 01 when I got it until July, and would've still worked, if it had the proper ports to make things work, but it didn't...

OH I would not waste a sound card on that Compac. I mean it will die in a couple of years anyway and I would have wasted my money buying it. So I am holding out for a Macbook Pro.

I am very happy with my Compaq Vista PREMIUM not the Basic. The basic was not so hot but the Premium has ironed all the bugs out and it is very good.

I do not know if my computer can support the premium and I want more than the basic which to me seemed like a glorified email and surf program.

Well my daughter got me a "Gateway"laptop, but they also have them in a desk type....Dell is supposs to be a good one but a friend of mine just got a "Dell" & it never worked quite right and when he called "Dell" all they did was try to correct it on the phone, which they never could,so he ask for a replacement,,they refused so i would not suggest a "Dell" even though they are a good name, they do not stand behind their computers, they use too but not any more...my gateway has been excellent...

That's odd cause I swear by my Dell and the excellent support I got from them when my disc drive and memory went out while it was still under warranty.

Years ago when you got a Dell, it was good because you ordered it and they would ship it out and even install it for you, but now with it in the stores, they are not that good. My son has a Dell, but he pre ordered it and besides he is a Computer Geek and knows how to fix what is wron,g but the average person does not.

The Compac Presario is loaded with so much junk and much of it was trial stuff that ran out in six months time and it was rather basic. Like that Quicken demo they had, I could have used a spread sheet and figured it out, so I got rid of it. And the Pentium 4s were running out. So as soon as i have ehough for my Mac, I am getting it. At least I have a choice between the Mac Os and the Windows Vista or Seven then.

Oh dear I am soooo sorry but right now I am laughing so hard I'm crying - I can just picture you knocking your head on the monitor, heard myself actually talk to my laptop screen say, "stop before you get hurt" not concerned about the monitor just you :) Ok, seriously I have no idea what to recommend I have a Dell laptop, 6 years old and love it but have never tried recording anything. Wishing you luck and thank you so much for the laugh I really needed a good one today :)

Hey, Before you throw it out, make sure it isn't just a driver error, and double check that it truly is the speakers and not just the drivers. Hope that I have helped you, have a good day, Happy Lotting!!

for my worst enemy? definitely ACER. terrible customer support, awful build quality and terrible battery life on laptops. For my best friend? Sony, ASUS or Mac.

Gateway and Compaq are generally horrible and cheaply made computers. Mac's are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to overpriced and are just a horrible computer in my opinion. It seems as though on macs they made them completely idiot proof and had to dumb down there OS for people. Your paying an insane amount of money for a little apple tag. When my friends and I went to Best Buy two days ago we noticed how a $1,800 Mac, we could make a custom computer for roughly $800ish. $1,000 for a label on a horrible computer? No thank you. Given that Vista has had it's fair amount of bugs, all the PC's you buy now get a free upgrade to Windows 7. And Windows 7 is looking amazing and is also getting positive reviews on it. In my opinion go with a HP, they generally have good computers for a fair price. My old desktop had little problems with it and it was a HP and my laptop is an HP also and I have no problems with it what so ever.
