Personal Development - What does it mean to you?

To me it is the constant improvement of my attitude, behavior, actions and character. It is what I do to make myself a better person in my eyes. To become smarter, more successful, more pleasant. So that people are more comfortable working with me, and that I am more comfortable working with them. As part of my personal development I read books on the Law of Attraction, and similar motivational such things, and I participate in a master mind group, that studies Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, which just happens to be one of those books, with this master mind group we also study listening skills, and go over the ebb and flow of chance. On top of that I speak affirmations to myself, write down my goals and plans for achieving them, review them from time to time - to make sure I am on track. I will soon be building a vision board as well, just a big board full of pictures that inspire me. Keeping these kinds of things out in the open where they are seen helps greatly to keep my mind where I want it focused. What does personal development mean to you? How do you perform yours? Do you think it is a bunch of mystical junk?

I definately don't think it's a bunch of mystical junk. People are always changing, either for the better or the worse. I think personal development is the creation of goals and the path by which we mean to obtain these various goals. I think we can always improve ourselves and we have to use personal development to do so.

There are a lot of people that think "personal development, or self help" is for losers, and I agree with them, it is for people who want to lose the negative feelings they have about themselves and the people around them. We are in a constant state of programming, if we don't choose our own programming society will choose for us. Considering the state of everything, I would sooner the Media did NOT have input to my mind, as such I don't watch TV, or read the news, I turn the radio off when the music is done. And I avoid negative thoughts whenever possible. Yes, the creation of goals and the plans we use to achieve them. Awesome, thank you kindly for your response.

I think everything you feel comfortable with is good. Some people feel comfortable with that, others feel comfortable with something else. When you are feeling good and you feel you are on the right track, that is great. I think that is why we are here, to learn. Personal Development is very important when you want to achieve "learning."Becoming a better person for yourself and for others. I practise Yoga exercises for my back, but somehow it makes me feel calm and I sleep a lot better. My pains in my legs are gone and my back is doing much better. Auto-gene training I practise too, so I can focus on good things in life. At the same time focusing on my health. Reiki I practise too. I have done the 1st and 2nd stage. This gives me hope when I am down. To others around me, it is mystical junk, but I feel good about it. There loss not mine.

Yes, what feels good is what should be done, unless it violates the rights of others, but to some people violating the rights of others does feel good...which makes it not so good to do though. That is the confusing part of using that as a philsophy, aside from that one simple aspect, I completely agree with you. We are here to learn and grow as people and as spiritual beings, all the things we do that make us feel good about ourselves help us to become better and feel better and be better. By consciously going out of our way to feel good, we begin to stop feeling bad because we form the habit of feeling good. I am so happy for all you have achieved for yourself, have an awesome day.

People that violate the rights of others, get violated sooner or later themselves. I believe when you are good to others , it comes back to you. When you are bad to others , it comes back 2 or 3 times worse! I have seen this happen as I am not a person who takes revenge. I normally walk away and let it be when someone hurts me. In my life I have seen lots of people who have dug a hole for me, but fell in themselves. And even then , I feel sorry for them. So, I think by feeling good about yourself and your life, you have better chances of helping others feel good about there selfs. You have to help yourself first before you can really help someone else. I have learned that much. Take care, have a nice evening.

It is not possible to abstain from growing and developing. Therefore I take a much more relaxed approach to my life than many others do who are efforting at growth. I am finally relaxing and ALLOWING my life to unfold. Of course I deliberately choose the thoughts I entertain to ensure that it unfolds in a way that is pleasing to me. And I diligently examine my beliefs and change the ones that do not serve me to more beneficial ones. Do I think developing into the new and improved version of myself is mystical? Yes I do!!!

As always, you give me much more to think about then what I had planned on, and I love that about you! I completely agree, we can not not grow and develop, but we can grow down as easily as we can grow up, and we have to choose how, where and why to grow. You allow your life to unfold around you, yet, you choose, how that happens, that is a simply fantastic way to look at it. It is mystical, and practical at the same time, I always through in a question, to see if someone who disagrees with what I have to say will take the bait, and you know what happens more often then not? The responders answer that question in complete agreement with my views, it is odd, but it amuses me, so it stays. Cheers zigzag - getting through your book slowly, not as much time as I thought I would have lately. And I should be moving into my new house on Thursday, if it all unfolds as it should, just got a few loose ends atm.

I completely agree that personal development is an improvement in character, to change your character you need to improve your attitude and behavior. Follow my way, it is a nice start, but for it to be more effective you should choose your own way, of a sorts, I do not recall if I mentioned the website for my favorite mastermind group in regards to Personal Development - http://30daycleanse.com - We study and talk about and analyse Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich, it is a really uplifting experience to me, I strongly encourage you to check it out. Cheers.

My friend, you ARE on the way to a brighter future. What you are studying IS NOT a bunch of mystical junk, as you put it. As an extra bonus, you may want to indulge yourself in reading up on some N.L.P. (Neuro Linguistic Programming) Any book on this subject will do. Personal development BEGINS with keeping an open mind, and...imagination / visualization, is key! Good for you! cdrxo

Thank you graciously for your kind encouragement. I will definitely have a look into neuro linguistic programming, thought it is my believe that this is an almost constant thing in todays society with TV and radio and what not. I do my best to train my mind on visualization, and open mindedness has never been a problem. Thank you so much for the extra information you have given me. Cheers.

Personal Development for me is about taking me from where I am in my life to where I want to go. I am at cause in my life and not at the affect of it when I engage in personal growth. I identified personal development curricula that facilitates and suits my personal learning style -motivational, inspiring and stimulating DVD's, a personal and practical 180 day home course where I follow a series of exercises and journal everyday...for the rest of my life now that I find it a consistent way to be in touch with where I am in relation to the vision I set for myself. Then I go to motivational conferences three to four times a year anything from one day to a five day program. I am fully alive again and feel that the possibilities for me are whatever I want them to be so long as I take action everyday to achieve my goals -to relax more, be fully present with my family and friends, mindful when I do my Tai Chi and exercise, appreciate the world around me and radiate positive energy to the Universal store that keeps us all going. I have committed to this journey and that is the difference between now and before. I used to practice parts of this program but never integrated it into my life so its who I am being every day...that is the difference...making the choice to be responsible for my own happiness and success in my life. Despite all the adversities there is a way to stay focused and make them possibilities for change and that is the magic dust...always evolving...what a great feeling it is.

Thank you for your support prash. I am doing great. It is heartening to know I have a bit of a following. Affirmations are a great way to "trick" your mind into believing what you are telling it, do you visualize when you affirm? You don't write down anything or introspect, I highly encourage you to try it for a month. Just take 5 minutes a day to write out a goal, plan, something you are thankful for, or a love note to your girl, or a thank you to someone in your life. and 5 minutes a day, to think how you could improve in some area. Your life will get better long before the month is up. I try to put systems in place, or follow other peoples, it makes things easier, if it is all laid out before you start. But there is still things to learn as you go along. Again, Thank you for your support, I appreciate you. Cheers.

I have always been attracted to motivational books and books about personal development. I have read a lot of different books, but Wayne Dyer is my favourtie author, and his books have been very useful for me. I have a notebook where I write down my goals and how I plan to archieve them. I have just started making new goals a few days ago, and I look forward to writing about the rest of my goals. I have another notebook where I write down the things that I am grateful for. So far there are more than 600 people/things on my list, and I write about big things as well as small things. I used to have a dream journal, too, but I haven't used it recently. I have also used meditation in the past. I don't meditate very often at the moment, but it has been a help for me earlier in my life. I use affirmations a lot, I write them down and I combine them with some beautiful pictures. Sometimes I turn my affirmations into songs, and that has been a great tool for me, because after a while songs keep on "playing" in my head even when I don't think about them. It is like a pop song that you can't get out of you head again, but my songs are more useful, because they were created for me and they focus on the things that I want in my life.

So much valuable information here thank you porcospino...From this I came up with the plan of purposefully composing my affirmations, my son will be starting music lessons in the spring time, and since he is so little, I will be going with him, so I will get to learn as well. And then I will take what I learn and apply it. Being grateful is a grand thing, I try to everyday, write out a thank you to someone who has changed my life for the better in some way. Some I send, some I don't but each one touches my heart in a more profound way then I imagine. I have great plans to start keeping my goals posted up in front of me at home, I am still working on this finding a home thing though, and I don't want to force my stuff on my Father in Law. Again, thank you so much for your ideas, I really appreciate them, and I know they will help increase the power of my believes.

Personality development is definitely not mystical junk.I think it is admirable if a person is constantly trying to remove the unwanted aspects of his personality and adding those aspects which make him more amiable, pleasant, smarter and ultimately successful. When one is comfortable dealing with others ,others also look forward to dealing with such an individual. It is great to know that you read self development books by Napoleon Hill.Recently I've enrolled with a group where one has to speak on desire, belief, persistence and goal setting. Herein i see a similarity in what you are trying to do and my present assignment.Keeping A vision board which reminds you of what your goals are will constantly remind you of the task at hand.I also always try to remove the negative aspects of my personality and replace them with positive thoughts and deeds.I support you in your endeavor to improve yourself and wish you success.

I sure don't think that personal development is a bunch of junk. I beleive that people are always changing and developing throughout their lives. I think that in able to do it in a positive manner you have to have a path laid out that you want to take. For example, I've been working on changing the attitude that I sometimes have with my children. With them it is a one day at a time type of thing, but it is something that if I lay out my goals for each day it is something that is definitely do-able.

You are right, you need to have a path laid out, and take steps to stay the course. Little changes in our lives, when constantly applied become normal and once they are a habit, they are not even a change anymore, and then we improve exponentially.

It`s not a bunch of mystical junk..i also read books on modern psychology.our main problem is we often think that our effort should be finished once we fail then we`ll almost have no fighting spirit...we don`t know how many times we fail how many times we succeed..it`s about our attitutde how to deal with that..keep positive!

Michael Jordan has claimed "In my career I have failed over and over again, that is why I succeed" I think this is a very true statement. It is not about how bad we fail, or how many times we fail, it is about keeping at it in a positive way until we succeed. Cheers.

Personal development means a lot to me. I define it by a means of improving oneself in all aspects to improve. For me, it means generally becoming a better person and more successful in life. I read a lot and I try to learn from the people around me. I set goals and time lines to see my progress because I think if you do not set any goals, you wouldnt now how to define success and then you wouldn't even know how to achieve it. I dont think it's a bunch of mystical junk although I have friends who think it is. Everyday is a new day and we can all learn something. Learning is a life long process if you're open to it.

Cool beans. What do you read? Learning from the people around is important, do you purposefully choose the people you associate with so that you are in a constant state of improvement? Goals and time lines are very important in achieve that which we desire, and do not forget that the little things add up, just think of how close some of the top drag racing cars are at the finish line. Cheers.

To me personal development is deepening my connection with myself, others and spirit. Learning to love myself more so I can stay open hearted. The more open hearted I am, the better I am out there in the world on all levels. In my relationships, career, taking care of myself physically. The actions I take is always trying to look at my behavior/actions and see how I am showing up out there. Take courses like Omega I, II, and III, and I'm doing a Harvel Hendriks workshop at the end of the month. I read books like Eckhart Tolle, and other spiritual books. I pay attention to my life and how I am living it, working at being present in the precious moments that life has given us. I look at my actions to see if they are mirroring who I want to be or think I am. If I behave poorly or react to a situation I examine why I behaved in a such a way. I do my best at remembering to be grateful for all of my many blessing, and send love to those less fortunate. I am a work in process and know that this is my lives journey, and path. If that's mystical junk, then yes, I think it is all mystical junk.

Wow, many efforts to improve yourself in your eyes, what are Omega courses? I participate in Mastermind Groups, I invite you to join one - http://30daycleanse.com If you like the concept feel free to sign up, if not then don't;) That is not mystical junk to me, but it will be to some people. It always amuses me how each person responds to questions, different then what I meant when I ask, it reminds me each time, to remember, "it is not what is said that counts, but how it is perceived by they who hear it" and to think of better ways to phrase certain questions in the future. We are all on the journey, keep it in your heart though, it is not what where we are going, but how we get their. Cheers.
