Is writing one of your hobbies?

Writing is a kind of relief valve for pent up emotions. Way before the internet or even computers, people used to write diaries, jotting down their day to day experiences and sometimes to the last minute detail. These were mostly people who could not give voice to their thoughts but they found they could give form to their feelings by way of words. Then again some found it was nice to write poetry on something that caught their fancy. There are guys like me for whom writing is a passion. I remember thinking of something nice to write on my way only to find myself having forgotten what I wanted to write. That gave birth to my jotting down points or a profound observation or sometimes a whole poem on a bus ticket or a paper napkin from a restaurant or any small bit of paper torn out of some odd newspaper. I used to convert these into small stories or poems or just make a small paragraph and then use it in some other works where a situation warrants. I used to consider myself some kind of a maverick to be doing all this till I came across the computer. And now we have the internet and I find that I am just a mere speck in this vast ocean of word peddlers, and like we all agreed we get paid to put words to our thoughts. May our tribe of writers increase.

Dear meapas, I really admire you, and your passion. I feel really honoured to know you here at myLot. Do you try to do task here? I got to know they pay quite well. I did not try because I am not gifted in writings. Do share some of your creative writings here, perhaps a poem or a short story of ideas. Keep it up!

They do pay better for tasks compared to what they pay for discussions and responses. So far I have not tried any tasks. There are some people who earns better by doing tasks. If you like reading then visit my blog. When ever I get time to write, I put up a post in the blog. Now I am thinking seriously to go for writing. I am thinking of putting up a post almost everyday in the blog. By the way thank you very much for your compliments.

I think responding to discussions and adding comments comes easier than the tasks. Sometimes the tasks are a little time consuming. Anybody prefer doing the tasks instead of the discussions?

Yes very much true but the earnings from the tasks are better. If you do both it adds up to a good sum. Most of the people including me too stick to only discussions and responses because as you say the tasks are too time consuming.

I've always loved writing. My favourite subject at school was "composition" - nowadays it's called Creative Writing...I have had a few articles published in magazines but that was some time ago -I keep meaning to write some more but I don't get round to it...I used to write to friends all the time, then when phone calls got cheaper we did that, then when e-mail came along we did that- it's still writing though! But I'd rather get paid for my writing so I don't write blogs...I'd rather write non-fiction though - I can't write fiction...If you gave me a pt I might be abe to weave the characters, but I can't think up plots. I think authors who write complicated plots are extremely clever.

When you love writing then the pleasure of being read will be even more. Appreciation comes with exposure and exposure gets you more oppurtunities and that in turn bring in the moolah. Fictionalizing is as simple as spinning a yarn, only you type it out in black and white. There must be so many instances from your life about characters and incidents you dare not speak or mention. Now you could do it by giving it a different name, setting it in a different time zone, in a different geographical location, add a fib here, embellish it with a joke there, garnish it with a surreal ending and voila, your fiction is baked, ready to be served hot.

I prefer reading than writing. The reason being I am slow at writing and have some difficulties in the spelling. I am so slow at myLot because I am not good at typing the keyboard at all...LOL But I have a friend who is very good at writings with 'bombastic' words in his blog.

I do pen in waterever i feel like when I am sad. But only when I am sad. Once I had this big fight with my best friend in school and I wrote this article after coming home. It was raining and I was crying because of the fight, so I named the article she is weeping. After writing I felt like sending it to a new paper which had an edition for kids on all fridays and it got published... I still write when I am sad, but now i write it only for me, I dislike anybody reading it. After a few days of writing i burn it up so that no body reads it.

If everyone was to think like you then there would have been no Shakespeare or even this site 'Mylot' of which you are such an important and active member. Why do you have to wait to be sad to start writing, just think of all the positives you have made to other's life and vice versa and just jot them down and see the world of difference your life will make. Talent is no talent unless appreciated and only exposure will get you appreciation. So get started and happy mylotting.

It was very encouraging to read your response. It is true about what you said, unless I show others how will they know waht I write!!! Hmm even when I respond to discussions on mylot and if my hsband looks at the screen, I minimise the screen and I shout at him for reading what i typed... I have to write more...may be the showing others part will takemore time I guess...

Well, well meapas, you do write very well. Have you ever thought of writing a novel or do you send articles to the newspapers or magazines. I do hope you have joined ezine articles which is a great place for writers. I didn't know how much I liked writing until I joined mylot. Of course in school I used to write well but later on, I sort of felt my flow of words had dried up and everytime I tried to write, everything seems to go blank. But here at myLot, I don't think,I just write and write or should I say type and type and I don't get bored. I do hope you'll write something marvelous one of these days and then we can all say, hey we know that gal/guy and feel proud of you.

Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately the publication industry dont think too much of our writings, although it has always amused me that the people who will ultimately read our writings like it. But these publishers decide for the readers too. So it is better to stick to write where it is savoured rather than let it sour our enthusiasm. As for being famous, what better fame can one aspire than being amongst a group of wonderful people at mylot, which represent a cross section of the world.

Hi Meapas, When I am able to focus my energies enough to write, I do consider it a hobby. I do manage to keep a journal most of the time even when I hate doing it (late nights being the worst times lol). Because I know that in the future I will like reading what I wrote I always manage to do that now. When it comes to stories and poems though I find it hard to stay motivated enough to write. I have to be doing something for someone usually. If I am just writing for myself I tend to do the creating in my head and store it as memories rather than writing them down which feels to take too long. I do try to write stories on occasions, but currently where I am doesn't to be conducive to me being creative. Whenever I am on holiday I write though, it becomes my main pastime when the Internet isn't around to distract me! All the best, Dranz PS: The TV is distracting me at the moment so if this doesn't make sense, that is my excuse lol

I guess so lol! Shame really as I do like writing and am not that bad at it, I am just too easily distracted. As for mylot there is a lot to write here too, if you want money anyway lol! Dranz

I really do enjoy writing. It really is one of my favorite hobbies, and it has been ever since I was in my early teens. I've always had stories or things in my mind that I just wanted to share and writing was the best way for me to let those stories and such out. I don't know how or really why I started to write. All I know is that I did and I'm really enjoying it.

You are amongst the few who have taken a decision without dwelling too much on its merits and just followed your heart and mind and stuck to it for good. Writing is not only a good stress buster but also a great leveller and a dispenser of justice. Write with all your zeal and passion and soon you will find it is a great bread winner too.

Here I am thinking whether I really love writing or it is just one of the many things that I want to try. There is this one question I have in mind and that is. "what in the world I really want to write?" Everyday, I think of something to write but then, once I have the pen and paper, I feel like I am drowned with the many possibilities. Should I write this? Or, that? It seems that the problem lies on the fact that I don't have my pen and paper ready all the time. Anyway, internet discussions and forums like mylot allow me to write whatever I want within a certain topic. I am thinking if I am considered a fan of writing, granting that I write yet not always ready as the others? I remember that I write on any paper but not as often as you do. Also, I almost always draw and write at the same time at the same paper. Sometimes, it stimulates me to write if I draw or if I write in a different manner.

I would say that writing is one of my favorite hobbies and I generally take a notebook or a journal with me whenever I'm going somewhere for a while. I spend a lot of my time thinking about good things that I want to write down or how I can phrase different things or something like that. I'm a really big fan of writing and I've been doing it since I was pretty little and I'm glad that throughout the years I have stuck with it because I really like the point that I have reached with my own writings.

Normally one gets a biased opinion only when there is some kind of vested interest in play, which fortunately is absent on this platform. Here we all like to share and help each other while enjoying each other's company. So keep up the good work and write away your blues. Happy mylotting.

Actually I don't feel like writing. It makes me boring and make me feel time-costing.No matter write with pens or mouses,I don't want it.Instead,I feel like chatting with people,it's much easier and convenient, you don't have to spend much time to explain something or tell friends what you have done today.

I do enjoy writing a lot. I haven't written in awhile, though I have thought of good things to write about from time to time. I'm more or less a person who writes something down, and then doesn't work on it for awhile so I forget what it was that inspired the story, or even what else I was going to say in the story. I guess, I'm more of the type of person who likes to keep my stories in my head, where it makes more sense and I won't have to worry about clearing out the clutter of writing so fast, I can't read my own handwriting. A thought crosses my mind, a sentence, and if I don't get it down as fast as possible I either doubt myself or forget the whole sentence

Many of us like to write and luckily we got such platforms to put it across. So enjoy these small mercies. By the way if you keep on writing you might fall in love with this and end up making this your hobby. It might come handy at a later stage in life. One can't say, anything is possible in life. So be at it.

I'm glad to hear you like writing in that way. I too have a habit of jotting down some ideas and thoughts as they come like one time I had an idea for a story and I just wrote down the main points and developed them in a book. I'm also keeping a diary and has spanned for 3 years now. Although, I haven't written much in it. Writing is a wonderful thing and I agree with you. Sometimes I use it as a way to warm up and focus before I do another bigger task. It gets me in the mood for work.

I love to write, and I always keep some pens and a notebook in my bag. Sometimes I find inspiration for a poem or a story while I am waiting for a train or eating dinner at a restaurant, and I usually try to write down my ideas straight away, otherwise I might forget them. In the past I used bustickets, napkins etc just like you, but now I always carry a small notebook instead. It is often easier for me to find inspiration when I am in town and when I am surrounded by people, but of course I also write in my home. I wrote my first story when I was 8. I wasn't very good at spelling or writing at that time, and I asked my mother for help all the time, but I simply wanted to write down the story that I had inside my head. I was 12 when I wrote my first poem, so that is 20 years ago. I still like to write poems, but I also plan on writing a novel and a collection of short stories.

You must be having a good collection of poems. Hope I get to read some of them. Try to get it published. Though getting it published is not very easy. During school days and college days I used to get lot of prizes for my poems and articles. I used to get it published in the college magazines and newspapers. Some where along the line I got deviated from this hobby and went into more serious business of money making and lost the touch. Now I am thinking of going into it very seriously and make some money. I have already started writing in the blog and for other writing sites like Triond,Squidoo and Bukisa.

Well there are different ways to express and one of them is writing. Sadly I am not a good writer. If you are doing this, then I think you should develop it more. It will not only make you good but you will also earn from this later on. The great thing about writing is that there is no limit to what you can write and there are no expenses involve. All you need is something to write on and of course plenty of imagination. I am looking forward to read your articles later on.

I like writing too. That's why I'm here at myLot. But unlike you, I don't like poems or stories. I like writing about my opinions and personal experiences. I find that I could write better when I'm writing real things than when I'm writing something fictional. I guess it just depends on the person. There are others who like making up their own world, so they enjoy fiction writing. As for me, I would like to know more about myself and the real world.
