Power of suggestion...are you susceptible?

United States
September 13, 2009 1:12pm CST
I just read a discussion about ice cream started by a friend here on MyLot, and now I am craving ice cream, when before it had not been on my mind at all! Also, when I see someone yawning, weeping, or laughing hard, I also feel the urge to do the same. Are you susceptible to the power of suggestion? If so, can you share some examples? Thank you. Karen

Hey sweetie! Yup, that's what it's called lol. I think something in our minds make us just apt to "empatize" with what another human being is feeling, a follow their behavior: tiredness, laughter, tears. I like your experiment lol. I hope the weekend has been a good one for you. Karen xoxo

oh yes when it comes to food i certainly am.. I dont know about anyhting else.. the yawn of course.. i think that's the most contagious thing on earth. I seen a pepsi comercial once that had a million people yawning on it!! i only seen it once.. they must have pulled it.. The food thing was even worse when i was pregnant though..holy.. i hated when people talked about food around me. i jsut wanted to eat whatever they where talking about!

LOL, Sissy. I hated that when I was pregnant, too...after the morning sickness stopped, the appetite picked up! To this day, if I read or see on a commercial something I love the taste of, I will be hungry for it! Karen

Hi Karen, oh dear is that me? I am awfully sorry, I know I did a discussion about Haagen Daz, is this the one you are referring to? Am I guilty for your sudden urges and cravings? Seriously though have you ever seen people when you start talking about fleas on animals? They can't help themselves from scratching or giving them the power of suggestion that they need to touch their hair? But I am certainly susceptible to yawning, mind you I am a habitual yawner and usually it's me that starts others yawning so once again I am guilty as charged your honour ;0)

Have to tell the truth Wolfie, I didn't really want your ice cream, I'm quite satisfied with one ball of mocha a week as a treat in town.

Hi Wolfie. Not yet, it was someone else...haven't read the haagen daz discussion yet, but you KNOW it will trigger another craving lol. Ohhhh yes! The itching thing...I have seen that, now that you mention it lol. Or if you say: don't look now, but...the other person looks every time. Have a beautiful evening Karen

Hello Jill. I do agree that most of are susceptible to the power of suggestion. It seems to be human nature, even as babies, to "imitate" some of the things we see or hear. Thank you for your input. Karen

Hi Karen, One time a co-worker went to me while humming a tune I somewhat didn't like. I told him to stop and reminded him that singing while working is distracting. A little later I was humming the same tune in my head, and before I realized it I was humming it a little too loudly that my co-worker told me "I thought you hate that song?". I answered "yes, but you're contagious!". And we both laughed.

LOL, Doryvien...that is exactly how it happens sometimes. For instance, I'll here some tune on a commercial, and however much it might bug me, it begins going through my mind and then comes out my mouth...humming or singing LOL. Thank you for sharing that. Karen

I have done the same thing. I always yawn when someone else does & another thing i do sometime is cry when someone else is. MY grandson was here sat. he had a complete meltdown when he had to leave so i did to, lol. I of course told him he could stay & finally his mom did to. poor baby, he wanted me to go w/him & THEY WERE GOING OVER TO SOME FRIEND'S HOME.I told him i wasn't invited but he didn't understand that. I felt sooooo sorry for him.

I would love to be able to say no, I am strong minded and suggestion has nothing to do with influencing me. But that is just not true, now I do ask questions and don't just do it because someone says to but suggestions do halve a lot to do with how i think. Tapping is my latest one. Some one on mylot suggested that this might help me cope with stress and this was a great suggestion, I followed it and found a whole world new to me. A bad suggestion is things I hear about politics, pretty soon my mind is suspicious of everyone even though I know that there are good people working very hard for our country.

The tapping must be a chain reaction thing. Someone told you and you told us, so now I'm a tapper lol. And yes, we can hear a thing and suddenly imagine or see it everywhere! Or like a song getting "stuck" in one's head. Life and people...ever interesting lol Karen

Hi Karen, I think it really contagious too. Like once I accidentally yawned in front my class (guilty! shouldn't do that!) As a result, a few of my students started yawning too. I don't know about weeping though, I wasn't effected if I saw one. But I don't know what to do if someone cry in front of me. For laughing, unless I read/see the jokes, I can't laugh along.

Hi Prinzcy. I think yawning and smiles are probably some of the most "catching" things when concerning the power of suggestion. Thank you for the great example! Karen

Hi karen, Yes, yawning is really contagious, myself even can't explain why I do the same when I see somebody yawning. Also, while watching drama series on television I can't help crying when i see my favorite character cries or should I say I'm a bit emotional when I can relate with the story I'm watching or listening. Another thing is the craving for food, it's actually my weakness when I see somebody eating a mouth watering food, instantly I will go and buy the same or cook when I have time. Those things are the most suggestive that I can be very susceptible. Nice to see here again Karen! Good Day!

Hi SeanBryan. I can never resist following suit when someone yawns, for sure. And like you, it's hard to cry in compassion when someone else is doing so, especially when you know why they are feeling that way. It seems we share many of those susceptibilities in common. Thank you for your response :) Karen

Your reaction is normal to do the same because you will not do the same if it is not in your liking.

Hello Olepmis. You make a good point to think about. Perhaps we do only imitate those things that appeal to us. I appreciate you offering you point of view. Have a nice night! Karen

Hi Ypyanyan. Yes, even moods can be catching, happy or sad. That is why, for me, it is wise to be with happy people more than with sad people or people who hold onto a lot of anger! I am glad you are a rational girl now :) Karen

I have experienced this quite often with yawning. And ice cream, as well! So I guess we are quite alike. U get a smile, u return one. U do it unwittingly. Weeping also. If a person is weeping in the room, I lose all my other emotions like happiness, peace, anger, so I guess, it is the heavy thing. Because of these interconnected reactions, I often think that the theory of cosmic energy passing thru us is indeed true. Because as the energy passes thru our body and leaves for the next person, it carries in some form the emotional energy. Depending upon the number of persons present in the room, and their feelings at that point of time, the feelings of a person indifferent to the situation can undergo drastic change. But of course, this is just my belief, it has not been scientifically proven.

Hi Vandana. You bring up a very interesting theory...and it makes perfect sense to me. I do believe there is sypathetic (negative or positive) that passes between people in a group. Perhaps someday, your theory WILL be proven by science. Thank you for sharing that. Karen

Hi peacefulwmn9, thank u for the best response. :) U know something, mylotters are so sweet. If I'd suggested the same thing to anybody around me - and they are all such practical folks - I'd be ridiculed for this. I am so glad there is somebody out there who can understand such things.
