Being Laid Off

United States
September 14, 2009 12:35pm CST
I was laid off Friday, and I don't know what to do with myself. I spent a weekend in recovery with friends. Now Monday's here, and I feel weird not going to work. I took care of unemployment, I'm working on a new resume, looking everywhere imaginable for a new job, what else can I do? Any suggestions? How did you or a friend handle the situation?

Hey there bejeweled, I have not been in a situation like this. But I hope I can provide some help.I just want to make you feel better. . I know its a confusing time, but you are already on the right track. Update that resume! Post it on all the online job related websites that you know. You can also send your updated resume out to your friends.Friends can check with their friends etc. for vacancies. You could also upgrade your skill set. Also, take time to relax and do things you never got time to do. You have the time now, enjoy life while looking for that job. Good luck to you and God bless.

Thank you! This is a great bit of advice. I feel bad for taking time to do things, but when else will I have time to ever do it? I need to find a job, but I have to eat, right? Making time for my friends during this time is a good thing to do. And it will also ease the sense of helplessness. At least in my area they have had a hiring spree. Maybe I can be one of the lucky ones. Thank you!

See, you seem to be feeling better already. Enjoy life! I tell ya, not too often do we get a chance to take it slow and enjoy life these days. Spend quality time with people you like hanging out with. Build a network, give them your resume too. Things will work out. I am positive. And if you ever feel low, just drop me a message. :)

How I WOULD handle the situation: apply for everything and anywhere you can and hope that someone will call you back and you'll get an interview. That's about all you can do at this point. I know plenty of people who have gotten laid off and who have just lived off of unemployment for a while, and didn't take any proactive action..And now are just jobless and broke since they're unemployments' run out. I'm sorry that you got laid off, but good luck with getting another job! I'm sure something will come up.

I don't plan on being unemployment very long, and hopefully not at all. With the company I worked for, our pay checks ran 2 weeks behind. So I still have one more paycheck coming to me at the 30th. After that though, I either need to have the unemployment set up, or a new job in the bag. Preferrably the second. Thanks for the advice! Luckily the unemployment level in my area has gone done, and a hiring spree is on the horizon.

Sounds like you are doing all the right things. You may also want to study up on some things. I don't know what field you were in but many companies are testing perspective employees these days. You might want to brush up on grammer and business math, depending on what field you were in or want to get in to. Also putting together an outfit or two for interviewing. Make sure your good interviewing clothes are clean, wrinkle free, and ready to wear. I also recommend lots of my lot. Ask and answer lots of questions. It will at least help you take your mind off of things while earning some cash.

I always opted for temp services like ManPower or Kelly Girls, thats a good way to let perspective employers see your working habits.

I know where you are coming from. But until you get hired for a job, just keep participating in mylot discussions, at the same time you are submitting job applications and resumes. Because throughout the duration of time it takes you to get hired for a job, you could be earning some income from mylot. Just keep participating in mylot discussions in the meantime. The best thing to do is to persevere. Don't give up.

Hello! I can relate to this topic.I too was laid off after working full time every day for about 16 years.I was so used to going to work every day.It felt very strange not being able to go to work.I didn't know what to do with myself with all the extra time. After thinking things over I went to the unemployment office and took a look at all the courses that were available.I set up a meeting with someone there to help me decide which course would best suit me.I found out that there is alot of oppertunity to upgrade yourself. You can turn that negative into a positive. You should give this a try. I hope that this can be of some help to you.

I've been trying to look at this as an opportunity. I loved who I worked with, but I can't say I necessarily loved the job. I've been in touch with some other companies that were similar to mine, and I can't say I'm all that interested in doing the same thing all over again. Thank you for the advice!! I think this will turn out to be a good thing.

I thikh right now that is the best thing to do. Put in applications and look for jobs. Most people just sit around and collect unemployment. You can check professional websites too, not sure where you are from or what your profession was so not sure which ones you can check. Hope things get better. I got over things when I had family and friends looking for jobs with me. My pastor found an opening in his company and helped me get the job I have now.

Do not worry bejeweled, I was laid off not once or twice, but three times. Of course my family was a great help at that time. Once I was not able to get a job for nearly three months, and the first time I got laid off, I thought the world has come to an end. Do not worry, things will turn out for the better. Do not join any other job you do not like in a hurry. Take things easy, and start searching for a job which you love. You are certain to get that job.Remember me, when you get your dream job. Best Wishes.

I did feel like the world was coming to an end.. if it was going to end, I wanted it to be on my terms. I went and interviewed today at a similiar company, and they loved me. So that gets my hopes up. For some reason though, I feel that I should take some time for myself, and try to improve what I already have. Thank you for the advice!!

I haven't been laid off for a very long time so don't know what I would do either....the job market is alot different from that many years ago.....I would say just keeping up your resume etc will help in the long run....when I was laid off I caught up on all the stuff at home that had always been left because I was working......it at least filled my time.

I'm glad things in my area are looking up. I'm going to a job fair tomorrow, and they are doing on the spot interviews. So I need to prep myself a little bit. I worked on my resume for like 4 hours the other night, so I'm sure it's current, up to date, and quite stunning. And you're right, house work does fill the day. Thanks for the comment!

Just over a year ago, I was laid off from a pretty good job that I thought would be one that I had for quite some time, possibly even until retirement. My lay-off was unexpected, and happened as a result of the economy as many other lay-offs have. I was laid off on a Friday, which also happened to be my sons birthday. Nice, huh? Anyway, I spent the weekend thinking about it and talking it over with my husband. THen, I made the choice to worl for myself. I decided that I didn't want to have to worry about my employment status anymore, I didn't want to continue working to pad someone else's pocket, and I ventured out on my own. Now, over a year later, as a family, we are doing much better, and as for me, I am still working everyday, just for myself, on my time, and I have my own schedule. I have bigger and brighter plans for the future that are slowly falling into place, but as long as we are ablet o pay our bills and take care of our kids, we aren't complaining. If there is something that you are really good at, why not take that talent and make it work for you financially. It takes work and determination, but I am living proof that it can be done.

I was jobless for around two years after graduation. I think I was sux at being interviewed that made me failed each one. In the end I decided to apply for a position lower than my qualification and received very low salary. Then after a few months, I became jobless again and then I applied as a teacher. I wasn't confident I was qualified for this post but just pushing my luck. Still, I succeeded and already work in this post for nearly two years now. I believe you also can get out from this situation. It may take some time but you can't give up. Good luck~~~

Hey there Sorry to hear about you getting laid off, and good luck getting a new job. I got laid off back in march ( i worked in construction) so i know how hard it can be. Stay optimistic, revamp your resume and look everywhere you can for a job - even if you find a job thats not perfect then at least you have some cash coming in meantime ( thats what i am doing currently) all the best x

Same experience. A month after my midyear performance review conducted by my client, which turned out to have a positive result, I was told by the client that they won't renew their contract with my agency (outsource provider) and that I have until September 30. I had a mixed emotion right after the meeting and was so shocked that I can't even remember how the communication ended. Nevertheless, I immediately took a 2-days leave the following days and started sending out my curriculum vitae. I had several interviews and as of now I have 2 pending job offers. I'm still undecided which job to accept. I think the best way to handle this kind of situation is to get over the depression or any negative emotion and start immediately seeking for another employment.

While you're looking for work, do some volunteer stuff. It'll give you a routine and it'll keep you busy and you never know the contacts you can make thru such a venue. ENJOY!

First off, I am really sorry to hear about your recent job loss. I myself have not had a job for nearly 4 months as I am a recent college graduate. Being home with no job to go do is extremely boring. Here is what I did. I looked for a job every day. This takes one to two hours. I signed up for websites to make money so I can still have some fun. I did not make a ton of money, but it helped and it was very distracting for me. I did surveys and wrote articles online, which I really enjoyed. If you would like to know more about the sites I used just message me. Also, I went to the library every day and got cd's to listen to and copy them to my computer. The key is to look for a job and then distract yourself/have some fun. Looking for a job will take a lot out of you. Good luck.

O man..atleast u had the job so may be in some time you will regain it. Think of me,I am searching job from last 2 years in such a stupid land and nobody taking a look on me. So it is better not having any job but you deserve it than having a job that you dont deserve.
