How often do you get your hair cut?

United States

I was discussing this a few days ago with a friend as she only gets her hair cut once a year. Whereas until I started growing mine out longer than shoulder length I would cut it every 2 months to keep the waves going. But I would cut it myself to save the $ on going to a salon. I used to know a guy who used to get his hair cut every 28 days on the dot. It was kinda creepy in a way just like well you ladies know what I mean in that regard. So how bout you mylotters how often do you get your hair cut? Do you do it yourself? Go to a salon or walk-in for those who pay to have theirs done?

I get mine cut about once a year, in the fall after it starts getting really cool. Then I can have it down inside my coats in the winter and keep my neck warm but when it starts getting warm again, it'll be long enough to put up and I can have it up all summer until its time to cut it again.

I know people like that, but years I don't get my hair cut I keep it up all winter because I really hate it long down my neck!

I know many people who do it the opposite way. In early spring they get it cut so it's cooler in summer and then longer in winter to keep their head and necks warm.

3 to six months to keep it looking good. Depends on if you like long or short hair and what kind of style you are trying to maintain. I go to a salon for all of my cuts.

I use a salon, too, but last time it was $15! I hope it grows fast through this winter so I can skip the haircut next summer. Of course, if I was working I wouldn't have a choice, I'd have to keep it looking nice.

Never. Mwuahah. It prolly helps that I'm female...long hair's considered attractive. Especially 'round these parts where all the females have theirs cropped short due to convenience. I like mine long, though...and I doubt I'll ever spend money on a new hairstyle.

Not usually. I will occasionally sit on it, and that's a bit bothersome...but I'm a wash 'n wear girl...I don't usually style it except on halloween, and that's for fun. I wash it, brush it, and go about life pretty much. And the only time I dislike it being so long and have to put it up is when I'm baking/cooking so it's not in my eyes. It's long and thick enough to keep me a bit warmer in the winter...and that makes it all worth it to me. xD

Hi xParanaoiax Your long hair doesn't bother you? The reason why I ask that because I used to have long hair but it bother me all of the time. I used to have to put a twist tie on my hair to keep it up, and it was hard for me to style my own hair.

Oh wow thats alot of hair! I was proud of myself having it longer than the bottom of my shoulderblade as that was the longest I had it in my life. As I made a fuss abt getting my hair brushed & tangles my mom always kept it in the shorter side of things & boyish no less

I cut mine once a year in the summer, very short, so that I don't have to get it cut again till next year! I might grow it out, though, if it gets long enough for a ponytail or something by next summer.

I hear ya. My hair is long enough for a ponytail already BUT my hair is so thick it just looks like a puff of hair. So I pull my sides up like you would and do various pig tails

Hello, Since I have started getting my hair cut I have had gotten it cut about every year and half. At first I started out with my sister cutting my hair. She is great with cutting peoples hair. Then I decided that last year I was going to go and get it cut at the Salon and when I got it cut I was able to donate my hair and there was 26 inches of hair that I donated. It felt good knowing that I was helping someone out there that needed hair. The way I see it is that my hair will always grow back and theirs won't due to cancer or because of hair loss problems. Also it was the knowing that if I was to lose my hair because of my cancer that someone will be there to help me with getting a wig. So I now go every year and half to the salon to get my hair cut and donate my hair that I get cut. Happy Mylotting

Hello, I too hope that it is curable. I will be going to the doctors to see what type of treatments there will be for me to choose from. I hope that your in-laws go through a great recovery. Good Luck and Happy Mylotting

I get my hair trimmed at least once a year. Once it gets to the middle of my back, I'll have it cut fairly short and donate my ponytail to Locks of Love in memory of my dad and father-in-law who both passed away from cancer.

Thats very nice of you to do that. And even better a great way to pay tribute to those whom are currently ailing from that horrid condition.

I don't generally get my hair cut all that often because it's kind of weird that you have to pay money to somebody to cut your hair when it's going to grow back anyways. I have basically only been getting my hair cut a couple of times a year recently.

I really do not go to salon to get my hair cut either. I perferred to cut my own hair instead of going to the salon all of the time. I do this so I can save money because a hair stylist would tell you to come back every other week for a trim and thats money I can be saving.

Hi Snugglebunnies I cut my own hair and I do it about once a week sometimes twice a week Its much cheaper than going to the hair salon,I wear my hair short so its easy for me to manage it myself,it also doesn't take me forever to wash it and style it I can just wash and go just like the guys I cut my hair short when I had my second child it was just to much with errands and housework, working ect.. I just didn't have the time to deal with it and I always found myself just putting it up in a bun . My hair grows fast so its necessary to me to keep it trimmed . Now the person who goes once a year I couldn't do that not without looking like some kind of wild cave woman.

I've heard of many women going back to short after they have their kids it's easier to manage for most and of course and infant yanking it out of your head doesn't help either.

Once to twice a month. If procrastination kicks in, I won't have a haircut at all.

i stopped going to the salon to get my hair cut because i recently started cutting my hair. i bought a couple of scissors a few months ago. i have long hair so it's fine if i commit a mistake in cutting. i could just go to the salon and have them fix my hair. i wouldn't say that i'm a pro at cutting hair but in all fairness to me, i cut my hair twice already in the last 5 months and people don't stare at me in the street and comment at how bad my hair looks so i guess i'm doing an okay job. haha

Wow, I'm amazed! Most girls your age would love to have their hair done in a fancy salon, and here you are trying your "skill" on yourself. If you say people don't stare at you like you look weird, then you must be doing a good job! Keep it up.

I cut my hair at least once a month and I do it myself. I have straight hair and it's easy to cut it. My only problem is I cannot see behind and often, my hair is not even in length. No worries. It's part of my style. The reason why I cut my own hair is I cannot sit too long at hair salons. Bores me out of my skull waiting for my turn and then waiting while they finish cutting and blow-drying my hair. Saves me a lot of money, too.

I hear you I hate waiting for your name to get called. Reading old mags & newspapers is not a passion of mine to pass the time especially if they are noisey in there.

I didn't think I could do it either but you just try to remember what the stylist did and sometimes you can do it yourself or give yourself a trim inbetween trips to the salon.

i seldom cut my hair because getting a short hair will make my face looks big. i usually go to a salon an expensive one to really get the cut that i want.

I hear you about that problem. I have similar problems too, so I usually keep it atleast shoulder length if not a bit longer.

I dont have any specific timeframe for a haircut. I get one when i fell that my hair have grown too long or are not in proper shape especially at the bottom and need straightening. For those who love to keep long hair like my daughter, she avoids haircut and would at the most go for some trimming when insisted upon.

I cut my hair myself. I have very long hair and I really don't trust someone else to cut it for me because I'm afraid a salon will just chop it all off and I will be very, very frustrated. I haven't cut my hair in awhile and I know I need a trim but I've been very tired and pretty lazy lately so I haven't really cut my hair lately.

Is that hard? I mean do you use double mirrors or something?

For me it's different each time I get my hair cut. See I get my haircut back in my original hometown, so I just kinda get my hair cut each time I go home to visit! It ends up being every couple months sometimes longer. When I go back home I go to a salon that is great and cheap! I love it!! That is why I wait to go there to get my hair cut. I only pay 10$ for a cut. If I got it cut where I live now I'd pay triple. It's nuts. I can also tan, get my eyebrows done, or my nails done while I'm there. it's great.

Yeah I know the more trendy the place is the higher the cost to get a current or trendy cut. Many salons or spas offer all sorts of services but they make sure they hurt your wallet to get them.

I end up doing it like three times a year. There aren't any trustworthy looking hair salons in the town where I go to college, so I only do it when I am back home. I go to school over 1,000 from home, so obviously that it not often. Basically I end up getting my hair cut once when I am home for winter break, once when I first get home for summer in like May, and once when I am about to return to school for the fall semester.

Sounds like a plan and if you have longer hair you don't need to get it cut so often either.

Hey there, I go to the salon although I do not pay for mine because of our incentives with the acting area. I have very long hair and get mine trimmed every 8 - 10 weeks to make sure I get the ends trimmed and or sometimes for a new style but mostly because I have been told that waiting too long causes breakage and it cuts up higher and this where many feel their hair does not grow. I am considering this summer cutting it, but have had it long for so long that I have to think twice. lol - I do make appointments because since it is done free I have to go it on their schedule.

I don't often go to the parlor for a haircut. I usually go when I'm fed up with my current hair do or my hair has gone really long just to avoid split ends. Cutting my hair really depends on my mood. I don't cut my hair on my own if I don't want to end up in a disastrous hairdo.
