Do you depend Entirely on the Spell Check button...?

Oh dear me my spelling sucks!!! I have just realised that without a spell checker am doomed, my English would not even be English but another new language I've invented. I'm definetly in trouble with the spell check police Do you totally depend on spell checker? Would you be confident to make a post without using spell checker or can you check spelling without using the spell checker?

Hi jellymonty, well I've never used a spell checker and wouldn't want to, how would I know it could spell properly. I know I do typos but at least I'm not having to be annoyed by something technical. Anyway I'm sure my laptop doesn't have one. But do they spell anyway in English or American, would it tell me I was wrong for correctly spelling colour instead of color. I have absolutely no desire to start using something I've always got along perfectly well without.

I thought I was joking. They really have separate spell checkers. Quite bizarre.

Hi jellymonty...How are you doing today? YES..YES...My spelling also sucks. When writing things I usually have to ask how to spell those words that we don't use everyday. Then there are those words that we do use and I still can't spell them. LOL..IF it wasn't for the spell check button I would be in great trouble too. Cool discussion and have a good day...

Yes I think its very bad that we solely depend on spell checker.. I'll probably have to take a grammar class again

Oh I know that I should do that too. But hey maybe we can blame that on our slang..LOL..I know that my grandson will be better at spelling than I will be..and he is only 7 years..LOL..

Well because english is actually my first language I suppose I do not need the spellchecker as much. I still make quite a few mistakes though I know mainly because on myLot I tend to write quite fast. But when I working on an important assignment I take my time in order to ensure I don't make so many mistakes. I am quite happy to work without a spellcheck function.

Well it would be a crime literally if you couldn't spell as English is your first language I can get away with it as English is literally not my first language.. I first spoke English when I was 19!

i don't use the spell check unless i write in blogs and some official sites, because just to increase the quality of the posts . unless it's comfortable for readers to read , spell check is not a requirement. also remember spell check consumes so much time

This is the problem with me. I don't use the spell checker at all. I rely on my eyes which are quite bad. I catch a lot of typo errors but a lot also escape my eyes. I'm often dismayed at the mistakes I made when I see my posts. Thank you for reminding me that the spell checker exists. Is it on MyLot as well? I don't know where to look for it.

No wonder I don't see it. I have the IE. But, I see it on my Word documents but never use it. Thank you for the response.

Well since I started using Firefox I am more confident in my posting here and feel more free. I am a horrible speller, that is why I hardly ever came here. I can express myself better with talking then with writing, unless I can spell check. thanks to Firefox I can enjoy myself here, and although FF doesn't have a grammar checker I only have to be embarrassed over that and not my spelling. if FF didn't have this option I would probably try to find another way to check my spelling,or I would go back into hiding.

My spelling is reasonably good. Every once in a while I will be unsure if I have spelled something correctly or not. I think my lack of confidence is worse than my spelling. But mostly when I spell something wrong it is because of a typo and not really because I did not know how to spell something, because when ever I am not sure I will usually look the word up on dictionary.com to check myself. Sometimes though if I am not sure and what ever site I am typing on has a spell check I will just leave it and let the spell checker correct it for me. But usually the spell checker for me is to check to see if I made any typos.

Hey there, I do use the spell check option, but I am sure I can do without it too. I lived in the US for quite a while, plus, I write a lot. Writing is both a hobby and my profession (currently). That being said, the spell checker sure does make life easy.

No, I never just depend on the spell check button.Lots of time I forget about the spell check button. I have a small dictionary by my computer and I look words up in it. It is what I had to use when I was growing up the dictionary so you could say it is a good habit.

You start by hearting all spellings, in your spare time, you can resolve the problem. Because you will always depend on spell checker. or you start writing newspaper articles in your diary, as it written in newspaper this way you will improve you spelling writing. Then you will not need help of spell checker.

Jell, The spellchecker has its limitations. If the words are spelt wrongly and yet forms another word in English, spell-check will assume it is correct and ignore it as wrong. It is good to some extent though.Anyway, I do not believe you are lousy in spelling being a Britisher. What are you doing in the UK in terms of a job? How's the economy?

Hi Jellymonty, I didn't believe I used or needed my spellchecker much until i started using this computer! I am in a family home at the moment and it has a very old version of Internet Explorer and Firefox doesn't work, so I have no access to a spell checker and it is meaning I have to check everything even more. Normally on mylot I do read through what I put to ensure it makes some sort of sense (I don't pretty much everywhere else) but a big part of that tends to focus on the words with the angry red lines underneath them. Without those lines I keep having to even remember to check my posts because I automatically think 'perfect, the spelling is fine...SEND!' but it isn't. With longer words it is annoying too since I have gotten into the habit of writing what they sound like and letting Firefox tell me what they actualy are, now I have to write what they sound like and hope the reader knows what I mean, or open Word to check lol! So yea, I think I probably rely on my spellchecker too much, though I have added a few responses now without it so I think I must have some level of confidence in my eyes lol All the best, Dranz

...Hi jellymonty, I can't stand misspelled words, luckily my computer has spell check but sometimes when a word is underlined to tell me it is wrong, I look at it and say okay, then how do you spell it and I have to pull out my old ragged dictionary. That's a question of mine, how do you find the correct spelling, if you don't know how to spell the word in the first place.?? Take care.
