Are you going to eat this? Or atleast have the guts to try?

balut - balut,fertilized duck egg
Philippines
October 15, 2009 11:10pm CST
Have you heard of "balut"?It is a fertilized duck egg with a developed embryo inside about 16 to 19 days. Boiled and it can be eaten with some salt and vinegar Yeah, it is like a baby duck fetus living inside the shell. It is in fact a delicacy, and for Asians out there they know it especially us Filipinos. Honestly, I lived here in the Philippines all my life but I never tried or planned of eating that egg. Haha. But many say it is really tasty and its like an aphrodisiac. But for me...its...lol...haha I'm scared just by looking at it. Will you try it? Or have you? How is it?

That looks pretty disgusting and inhumane to me. I don't know if I could bring myself to eating a baby. It makes me want to throw up when I think about biting into a small baby duck phoetus. Uggh

It depends upon the culture. Balut is a part of Filipino culture. Some people may view it as disgusting but no one is forcing you to like it.

I agree that it looks disgusting. But trust me, it's quite delicious.

balot sa puti - delicious & nutritious balot sa puti ... hehe
haha...hello danitykane!i like eating 'balot'! yes, but not something like that! huh! that's the worst balot i've seen & if all balot looks like that, maybe i will stop eating as well...hehe the balot that i like eating are those 'balot sa puti' where the chick is not obvious...hehe coz its still covered with white something... and yes balot is really tasty and good with vinegar or salt... and they say that its also nutritious... some eat them in the dark...so that they will not see its appearance...hehe

Hello danitykane. I have heard and tasted "balut". When i was a kid, my grandfather used to eat the fetus of our balut because it is believed that it can strengthen the knees. My second experience was in high school already. I was kind of brave to prove my friends that balut and the chick is delicious so after i sipped on the soup, i swallowed the whole chick and munched it til its gone. I remembered that one of my reactions were unexplainable especially when i was imagining the parts that i was chewing. I almost vomited but hurriedly drank water. Now that i have graduated from college, i think i won't be scared of it anymore. If i bought one, i will definitely eat the whole egg. Though it really isn't my favorite dish so i am better off with chicken skin and tokneneng.

That would be the guilt-free poultry products. I love it too. especially calamares.

oh yeah "calamares" ahahaha..you like street foods too huh! But I just can't eat balut. Thats all I have to say! I remember eating penoy and I found that theres a very small chick in it, a nerve like form on the egg. I though it is really the embryo. I dropped it! I mean, I accidentally drop it on the floor! (my bad) haha

hello danity kane, You know there was a portion in one of the shows back in the Fear factor show where they have asked American Contestants to eat Balut. wow, i just can't stop laughing upon seeing their faces after eating the fertilized duck. but seriously, I rarely eat the duck because i feel disgusting to it sometimes. most specially the bones, i only like the yellow part of it. and what's this You never tried balut? come on, be a Pinoy and eat the balut man! oh, i missed the salt not to mention drinking the fluid inside before eating..other mylotters might find it yucky because it was in their tradition to eat those.

Hi danitykane, I've heard of such thing, but never see someone eating them. For me, it's so disgusting and may be smelly, and i'll never eat it. As for the aphrodisiac effect, that's funny, is that true? I think it's just a tale, haha:) Have a nice day!

Yeah we all love it. It taste very good just like eating an egg but with some meat on it. I don't know if is already a meat but it taste good. And by the way it is cooked before it was eaten and don't smell bad at all. I was just in your mind that you feel disgusted but in reality it was just a food that we eat.

Hi, danitykane. My oldest daughter just now tole me not to eat this because it is nasty. And I won't. Thus fertilized egg needs to finish growing. I would never eat a still born egg. That is very disgusting! I would rather just boil an egg and eat that.

I've eaten a lot of disgusting things in my time anyway so I guess one more thing won't matter But seriously, although I do not agree with this "delicacy", I would force myself to try it if only to be able to claim that I have eaten duck fetus (whether or not this is a good thing to be able to say is debatable)

Its a very healthy food. Balut is in fact, as the vendors say it, is a complete meal in its self! Just by the look of it, you can actually imagine it as a big slob of protein the size of a golf ball, minus the grossness, hehehe. But I really don't eat it whole, it just totally gross me out. A few times I've eaten it whole, and my stomach just couldn't accept the package it got. So I pretty settled for the yellow part of the Balut, and most importantly, the natural soup it had in itself, you can make it "higop" means to drink the soup. And boy its very delicious ^^.

When I was younger and clueless, I gobbled the whole thing up. It's best served hot or warm, with dashes of salt here and there - it removes the raw taste. Now that I've grown though, I'd only eat that when my papa forces me haha And the only parts I can really enjoy are the soup and the yolk. The hair? N-O.

hi there! haha.. that's crazy at least you have given it a try when you were still young!...Yeah everyone likes the yolk and the soup nut many got a little scared with the chick. Thanks for responding! Happy lotting!

Hi. I am from the Philippines but I have eaten balut only once in my lifetime. I was just dared by my husband to eat it. Oh, I closed my eyes, pressed my nose, and stopped breathing just to be able to eat that duck fetus. I guess I would never do that again - once is enough, twice or more is too much...

#1. I'm a vegetarian, I think it's morally objectionable to eat meat. #2. I'm really weird about the way food looks, like the way it looks get me excited to eat it. This doesn't look good to me. My answer is no. No, I would not eat that. lol

Are you sure you're Pinoy? LOL =) Try it. It's really delicious, I tell you. I always eat balut every afternoon. Well if you really don't like it because of the "sisiw" then I suggest you should eat Penoy instead. It's just a plain duck egg.
• Philippines
17 Oct 09
yes i am! haha. I know! Because of the "sisiw' (chick)..I have tried eating penoy and I still do eat it! I like penoy too, but have you seen or bought a "penoy" that has very small embryo on its bottom part? haha. Because I had eaten it but not the embryo. It freaks me out! One time I bought a penoy from a street in Guadalupe. The vendor of that penoy said thats theres no chick on the penoy he gave me(because I usually ask them if theres an embryo in the egg, I just want a plain "penoy" without any "disney character" hiding in the egg hahaha) and he said its all plain like a boiled egg. But there was one in it!! lol

Hi danitykane! Yes I love balut! It looks a bit disgusting or nasty but taste really good. It is also rich in protein and we, Filipinos all know, it can make our bones and knees strong. You should try it. Some are putting vinegar on it but as for me plain salt is okay. Just don't look at it and don't forget to ask the vendor to give me small duck fetus. There are baluts that you can hardly see the duck.
