Heritage Day

We had Heritage Day in downtown Jasper this past Saturday and although it was very cold, we had a good turnout. I mean, it was very cold, like in the upper 40s! This is the first Heritage Day we have had in years and according to the Daily Mountain Eagle, which is our local newspaper, the event offered live entertainment by an Elvis impersonator, the Cruise-in on the Square car show, activities for children, and performances by local dance groups as well as many other highlights. We also had a lot of people selling crafts such as jewelry, paintings, handbags, clothing, etc. There were a lot of food booths, too. I was one of the entertainers. I sang and played the guitar at 10:00 that morning. Talk about cold. My hands were so numb I had a hard time fingering some of my chords. I talked to one guy who was selling macrame jewelry and he said he tried to make some of his jewelry but his hands were so numb he just couldn't do anything so he just gave up trying. Although I couldn't get a very good audience, I feel like I did a pretty good job performing. There were just so many things going on at once but what little audience I had, they said they enjoyed it. Some of the songs I sang and played were: "I Want To Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart", "Hey Baby", "This One's For The Girls", "Grandpa, (Tell Me About The Good Old Days)", Mamma, He's Crazy", "I Fall To Pieces", "You're Looking At Country", and I ended with a religous song titled, "One Day At A Time". In other words, I sang mostly country music. The group that performed after I did played classic rock and they were very good. After they finished performing, I walked around and looked at some of the crafts. Then, I went to hear the Elvis impersonator. He was very good! He sang several good Elvis songs and gave several women scarves and leis. I was hoping he would give me one but he never did
. I was pretty close to the stage, too. Maybe next time. The group who performed before him was good, too. They had a girl lead singer and what was so funny was that I walked up just in time to hear her sing "I Fall To Pieces" and I had sung that same song earlier, myself, lol
. I almost forgot to mention that the Humane Society also had a booth. We plan to make this an annual event and I plan to sing again. I just hope it won't be as cold next year. I don't know why we quit having them unless it was due to a money problem. It seems like that's what I heard, anyway. Do you have a Heritage Day in your city or town? Have you ever taken part in one, whether it was entertaining, selling crafts, or food? Tell me about your experiences. Of all the songs that I mentioned that I sang, which one do you like the best?

I guess I fall to pieces WOULD HAVE BEEN MY FAVE ALTHO I LIKE THEM ALL. We do have what is called the soy bean festival here & they have a big turn out for it. I never go . I hated it when i had my store downtown because they closed the street & killed all the buisness downtown. They have live entertainment every night, a carnival etc. I'm not able to go & walk around much so i don't go.

I wish you could have been there. It was very cold, though, and a lot of people didn't stay for that reason. I wish you were able to go to your soybean festival. I'm sure you would enjoy it. Maybe someday you can. I always try to look on the bright side. Kathy.

HI Kathy: Wow! I didn't realize you were so multi-talented there woman (G)!!
Bravo to you, I could never ever get up in front of a crowd and sing like that, no
way!!
I liked all the songs you sang not sure I could name a favorite one there;
did anyone take a video of you singing??
Are you up on YOU TUBE or something?
Congrats again!!!
We don't have anything like that here in my hum-drum town we have a few crafts and
festivals but I've not been to any for years not really since the car accident
I just don't feel up to it and standing around is a killer for me pain wise;
WE've had so much cool rainy dreary weather but today the sun is out its supposed
to get up to 70 today and maybe 71 tomorrow before the next round of rainy weather
comes back speaking of which I need to finish up outside today, gotta get the rest
of my flowers done up, and tore down things put away in storage until spring...(sigh)!!
I'm gonna miss my beautiful flowers...
{{take care now}}
Love & hugs to ya!!

Hi Jan! No, nobody video taped me, I hate to say. Somebody did take my picture but I don't know if I'll ever see it or not. I'm not on youtube, either. I wish I was but I don't have a video camera or anything and I don't know if I could video tape myself or not. It seems like because technology is so improved now, we can do things we used to couldn't do.
I think the reason why it was so cold was because we've had so much rainy weather here lately. It was pretty nice today and yesterday after the sun came out. Kathy.

Yes, I did have fun. I do think it would have been better if it hadn't been so cold, though. I can imagine what Nevada Day must be like. I can imagine a lot of western stuff going on, maybe some horses being involved in it. That's just my guess. I don't really know what goes on. I'm sure you enjoy it, though. Kathy.

Congratulations, cyrus..being an entertainer certainly requires dedication and tenacity...and I wish you the best of luck!
You touched the heart of a County Music Lover here...I love both the modern & classical country...but, of course, you touched a nerve with Patsy Cline..and "I Fall to Pieces," and I wished I was able to hear you sing it!
When you referred to Jasper & Heritage days..is that Jasper, Alberta? And if so, seeings you are close, did you ever perform at Merritt Mtn. Music Festival? I worked there, in Admin, for 9 years...from 1990 in Hedley to 1999 in Merritt? And I spent many years in Promotion at CJVI in Victoria, and one of my greatest possessions is a picture with Hank Snow in his last live performance! Lots of others like Statler Bros.,Charlie Pride, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, etc., but Hank Snow means the most!
I read your post on Michael Martin Murphy, love him too...but truly am an Alan Jackson, Johnny Reed and Terri Clark fan! And I think my most favourite song in the world is "It's Such a Pretty Day, today!" And truly, each day is! Cheers!

Hi pergammano! Thank you for such a nice post! I like both the modern and classical country, too. I also like classic rock. That's what I grew up on. I'm in Jasper, Alabama, not Jasper, Alberta. I've been to Jasper, Alberta, though, and I must say that it's a lot prettier than Jasper, Alabama. It's mountainous. That's what I like about it. I was there in 1989 with a tour group. We toured the Canadian Rockies and the Northwest. No, I never did perform at Merritt Mountain. If I ever get a chance to perform, I always do it. It sounds like you've had some very interesting jobs! I like Alan Jackson and Terri Clark, too. I did a discussion on Alan Jackson several months ago. I'm a big fan of Billy Ray Cyrus's, hence the username "cyrus", lol
.
When we went to Jasper, Alberta, we got to see Jasper Park and it's very beautiful! Kathy.

Hey, cyrus...just alittle egg on my face! Did NOT realize there is a Jasper, Alabama....but congratulations on your "gig"! Aha, so that's where "cyrus" came from! Now, with all your talent, I will be listening to country waiting for your hit! But then I would need to know your performing name! Have a great day!

hi cyrus I read how cold it was in Jaspar, and was thinking wow he must be in Wyoming then I looked at your profile ,Alabama ,I did not know it got that cold there but then I live way over here onthe west coast in Ca. We don't really have a heritage day in most of the towns around me, we have the Strawberry Festival in Garden Grove where i am now, in Costa Mesa every year is the Fish fry and the County Fair. wish we did have a Heritage day, that would be so great. we do have booths and stuff like you mentioned during the Orange County Fair.I have never participated myself but my hubby cooked in the cookhouse cafe there for several Fair seasons. we got to eat free as he was one of their cooks., the food was really good too. We have oodles of different displays too at the County Fair, it goes on for a whole month in July. more fun but since I have become disabled its to hard for me to manage. I do miss that. I loved the Horticulture building where we won second prize for best natural garden display. it is a great building, then there was the new products building, arts and crafts building, photography and painting building just to mention a few.

Btw, I'm a she. I noticed you called me a "he" when you said "wow he must be living in Wyoming". A lot of people on mylot have thought that I was a man because of my username "cyrus". I tried every username I could think of when I first joined mylot but all of them had been taken except this one. I chose "cyrus" because I'm a big fan of Billy Ray Cyrus's, lol
I kind of wished that I had picked something a little more feminine to keep everybody from being confused.
The Strawberry Festival, Fish Fry, and County Fair all sound like a lot of fun! We have a county fair every year in September but it only lasts from Tuesday till Saturday. Attendance was down at the fair this year because of all the rain we have been having. I usually go every year but I didn't get a chance this time.
Oh yes, it gets cold down here in Alabama, too, but not like it does up north. We do get snow but it's only about every other year and we just get a few inches. Thank you for responding. Kathy.

Why are you jealous of me? I would prefer the cool and warm weather youall have out in L.A. anytime to the cold we have been having here lately. I'm in Alabama and I realize that people up north have a lot worse winters than what we do. It gets very hot down here in the summertime, though. Our temperatures in the summer get up in the 90s and sometimes up to 100 or a little over. We've had a lot of rain here lately and I think that's the reason why it's been so cold. It's supposed to get up in the 70s tomorrow afternoon.
As far as Heritage Day, I thought they had festivals like this all the time out in L.A. I hope you will get to see a Heritage Day someday. It's a lot of fun! Kathy.

We have had a May Day, or All School's Day celebration in May for over 100 years. It is to celebrate the school graduates of all level, pre school and up, in all the communities around. It sounds like you had fun, I used to take my daughter to "twirl" in winter parades, but as you say, it is very cold, sometimes. I hope Jasper keeps up with this, it seems it will bring funds to the community. We sell buttons yearly to help fund the event. There is a contest to design the button once the theme is announced.

The May Day sounds very interesting. We are planning to make Heritage Day an annual event and I hope we do, too. As I said in my discussion, I don't know why we quit having them for so long. I used to participate when we had them before and I missed it when we quit having them. Thank you for responding. Kathy.

we dont have a Heritage day here --and if we did I dont remember having one.
we have a ton of festivals all summer long and into the fall time, but it has been forever since we have been to one ourselves...with money being tight and my hubbys work schedule we spend most of the time at home when he isnt working since he is gone all week and we have people over on the weekends lately.
I would love to go to the festivals...maybe next year we will be able to start going to them again.... sorry yours was so cold but glad that you had a good turn out and that you got to sing!!
I would have to say my fav song probably would have been "Grandpa, tell me bout the good old days".... I always did like that song.
I hope you have more of them and that you get to sing again next year!!
Happy mylotting.

Thank you for your response. I hope you will get to go to your festivals sometime in the future. I'm sure you, your husband, and the children will all enjoy them. I understand how it is with finanaces, though. It sounds like you really have been busy with all the company you've been having during the weekends. I bet they enjoy your children, too.
Kathy.
Kathy.
