Managing notifications (assuming you get them lol)

Like Peter Pan said, "oh the cleverness in me" and "I'm gonna crow"...
Or something like that...
I don't know why I'm crowing, it wasn't even my idea, it was Libby's.
Let me explain...
I finally started turning my myLot notifications on. I had originally turned them off because my inbox was getting flooded (by one person in particular lol). And for a very long time I managed things by checking out the discussion tabs. I've been talking for a long time about changing my e-mail address and letting them go there. Talking but not doing.
Then about a month ago I turned notifications on for some people, just to see how it went. I created a myLot folder and I'd move them in there until I was ready to deal with them.
Then Libby says to me, "why don't you create a rule?" Libby's organized, I am not. Plus I have never created a rule in AOL before.
But what the heck. Today I created a rule so that all my discussion e-mails would go into my myLot folder. I also turned on notifications for a lot more people.
I may get backlogged. I may go crazy. But I'm ORGANIZED!
I could crow!!!

Well that souns awfully complicated. If people churn out a job lot of 10 discussions at a time I delete them, I delete all responses to my own discussions as they'll be in my list, I delete any discussions I'm not going to answer, I thank people for best responses and delete the comments back which I won't be commenting back on. So it's all organised right off.

I think thea means but I could be wrong,.. I'm just trying to uh.. make sense of this?
"If people churn out a job lot of 10 discussions at a time I delete them."
My guess: While checking notifications if 1 person has created several discussions within a matter of minutes he simply deletes' the notifications.
"I delete all responses to my own discussions as they'll be in my list"
My guess: He's got his notifications set to email him every time there is a response to his discussion. So he deletes' those notifications because all he has to do is check the discussion he started to see the responses.
"I delete any discussions I'm not going to answer"
My guess: He's checked a notification email, decided that particular discussion wasn't for him so he just deletes' the email.
"I thank people for best responses and delete the comments back which I won't be commenting back on"
My guess: He thanks people for the BR, someone response to the thank you so he gets a notification of the response and just deletes' it because he's not going to make anymore responses to that particular discussion.
Now I could be totally wrong, he could have just type this like this out of sarcasm to show how disorganized he can be LOL, but if I'm not...thea? Wouldn't eat be much easier just to turn your notifications off, and then manually go through your friends list and turn on the notifications for only the particular friends you choose?

Well you don't have AOL, but on GMAIL you can create a filter. I don't see where you can create a folder right off the bat, but you can create a filter that says for "discussions@mylot.com" star it or forward it to another e-mail address or "apply the label" personal. You'd have to play with it...

Hi, D!
Feels good, doesn't it? I did the same thing about three weeks ago, and I think it will become one of my first-of-every-month habits! I can't find time for more than 1,000 e-mails every day!

At least I'm earning a few bucks here and there, and I've become quite close with several on-line friends! It was fun while I was on vacation, but not so much when I have to be at work by 6 AM!

I do not get nearly as busy, and most of my friends don't start too many conversations. Those that I would get flooded by were turned off! Also if I don't seem to respond to too many of their discussions I'll turn them off as well... no sense taking up the space!
If I start to get a little backlogged I might just go through and delete a whole bunch without looking... it happens sometimes!
But mostly I'd just open each one and skim through a little bit. Instead of stopping on it and thinking about it for a minute to see if I can think of a good enough response, I'd just skim and if it didn't strike my interest immediately I'd delete and move on!

I more or less do the same. Some I delete right away too. A few I save and go back to after I've woken up...

I have all the notifications set to the on, as that way it is easier for me to answer the discussions rather than to look for them on Mylot.I tend to look at as many emails as well as answer as many discussions as i can even if it takes a few hours. My husband laughs when i start the emails up to come through as there are always loads from my lot.But i do understand what you mean.

I do like them going to my email though so that I can go through my friends discussions first. There is alot that I just delete after reading, as I don't feel I can give a good answer or they do not pertain to me. It makes it alot easier. I don't even know how to create a rule, but I am on Yahoo. I don't know if that is the difference. Good luck on getting organized.

irritating ones - lol. Like that one I turned them all off for way back when, some guy who was flooding my inbox. Whoever it was, and I don't even remember, I think he decided that he can't get rich here and went somewhere else. :-)

I have notifications turned on for a few friends, but very seldom use them. I much prefer to go to "friends started" and work through them. Quite often, especially when I've been away, I will go to my friends' profiles and work through their discussions from there. That way I know I won't miss any (and we do know that even when we have the notifications turned on, we are NOT always notified). Sometimes I will also look at discussions my friends have responded to and add something (is that stalking?)

I am never notified on your discussions or Holly's either, so this doesn't totally work for me...

Hi dawn!
I also feel that receiving notifications for our friends discussions does help and we can choose from the discussions. I do not keep notification ‘on’ for each friend. I prefer doing it rotation-wise sometimes. Keeping notification ‘on’ for each friend could be troublesome. I feel handicapped if I do not receive notifications about discussions, comments and counter-comments.

I turn them on for people after I've gotten to know them a bit and I know that I enjoy visiting their discussions.

hi dawnald. managing emails with rules are what filters to some email programs, right? and that's what i had been using with mylot notifications and my email program.
since i turned on most notifications for my friends, and also subscribed to most mylot alerts, i receive a lot of email notifications daily.
so to easily check what types of notifications i newly received and how many are they, each type goes to each corresponding folder.
i created one folder each for "new discussions started by friends", "new response to discussions i've created", "new comments", and so on.
i then created filters, to when a new email notification from mylot came, they go to its corresponding folder. i can then read the message and response to it or i can do it in a later time when i get free... neil

I created a special MyLot folder a few weeks ago and it’s really good. I have two, one for a cat forum that I belong to and the other for MyLot. It is great to see what my in box looks like without all these notifications! I like having them all turned on and receiving them but when everything went into my in box it took about 20 minutes every day just sorting all my mail! Being organised rules!

When you are able to finally be in control of something it feel so great. Proud of you. I am not AOL. I am not sure that I can make a rule in Yahoo, but I can put in filters. That keeps some things out completely.
