Oh my gosh! On Oprah today a woman was guest that had had her face torn off by a chimp! It was horrible to hear her friend on the 911 call. She thought her friend had been killed by this monkey that was HER pet. I will state right here and now: I HAVE NEVER LIKED MONKEYS! I don't think they are cute or funny or anything! They weird me out! Now today this monkey has done this. OOOOoooohhh! You can't imagine how this story makes me feel. The lady thought her friend was dead but she wasn't. The lady was on Oprah and showed the world her face. I cannot even imagine going through this. How do you feel about wild animals as pets? What are your thoughts on this poor lady? If you had a wild pet and this happened to your friend how would you feel? This lady is suing her freind. It is an awful story.

I'm hoping to catch the Oprah show when it's rebroadcast around 1 a.m. but yes I had heard that story about that woman and the nutcase who had the chimp Travis. I remember reading that chimps are actually very aggressive..they might be cute when young but can't be managed when older. It's almost the same principle as idiots who actually acquire a tiger cub..and yes, not too long ago there was a jerk who had a full grown tiger in his apt here in NYC area. What I don't get is this. I never recall reading if criminal charges were made against the woman who owned the chimp--I also remember reading that the woman allowed Travis to sleep with her...too bad the chimp didn't rip her face off instead of that innocent friend of hers

I so agree. That poor innocent friend. Just trying to help her out. She is suing her too. For millions! The owner says she wishes her friend luck in this and that she loves her and only wants the best but wants her to understand that she gave her a pace to stay when she wasn't working........blah.........blah........blah. that freaky animal tore her face off!!!! Unbelieveable.

There are two types of apes - the veggie ones, like gorillas and orangs, can still injure you but only by accident - not by trying to have you as a 3 course meal. Chimps and their associates - are baboons apes or monkeys? I'm never sure - eat meat and vegetables. Like us, they are omnivores. Like us, they are vicious, aggressive and will hurt their own children. I admire them - but they have their "cities," we have ours. Like teenagers, you hope they won't evolve into something worse than they already are ...

Unless you own some sort of conservatory for animals you should not be owning wild animals. There are tons of organizations who warn people against getting wild animals for pets. If you seriously love wild animals you will try to help save them, not enslave them. Become an animal behaviourist so you can work with them and be close to them and build rapport with them on their own ground. I saw this guy who is a lion behaviourist and he was playing in the wild with these full grown lions that he is friends with and has watched them grow up and everything, it was crazy, he is brave, but he is also a professional. I feel bad she got hurt and everything, that is horrible, but this is just another lesson for everyone else who thinks they want some sort of wild pet. They are still wild deep down inside. I personally don't like monkeys (I love all animals I just wouldn't want to be around monkeys). I love wolves and I want to be an animal behaviourist one day and help save them and their natural habitat and to rehabilitate them to go back into the wild. But I wouldn't just keep one in my house as a pet. If I had giant woods outside my house he could live free out there, but to try and own a wild creature as a pet you can domesticate is hard and can be very dangerous. People have a hard time controlling their dogs, they shouldn't be owning monkies and bears and stuff. So take this as a lesson, do not try and own a wild animal as your pet. Work with a conservation or a zoo or an animal rehabilitation center or something.

I so agree. The actress that was in The Birds and Marney (can't think of her name) has a conservatory for cats. My daughter would love that! I can't see the enslaving of animals. I think it is majorly selfish. This is like a extreme wake up call for these people but I doubt they will blink an eye. I don't like monkeys either. Ugh! Do you know what is going on here and in several other states with the wolves. It is the most horrific thing. And to think I was on the wolf recovery board that helped get them on the endangered list. Then they get their numbers up and afew spoiled ranchers get a bill passed making it legal to slaughter them. This makes me so angry! I wish people would take this as a wake up call but I doubt they will. They want what they want and are selfish enough to get it.

well I would kill the pet and really wild animals need to be in the wild but if you got one as a baby you still need to turn it lose when it can fend for itself

Wild animals should NOT be kept as pets. The chimp owner should not have had such an animal, they are unpredictable and dangerous. I saw that Oprah show, I cried for that poor woman, she will be disfigured for the rest of her life. It's fortunate that she can't remember the attack, I"ve never seen anything that horrible. I got the impression that the chimp owner doesn't care what her animal did and feels no responsibility for the attack. Her lawyer makes her sound like she did the victim a favor by taking her in years ago, she deserves to be sued. How often do we hear about wild animals, kept as pets, attacking, killing and maiming people. People are buying snakes, pythons and boa constrictors, find they can't keep them and release them into the wild to fend for themselves. Those animals multiply and become pests, they endanger the local ecology. This is criminal.

It is criminal and I really surprised the lady hasn't been brought up on charges and the animals isn't ordered to be put down as well. The lady is suing her.

I live in the state this happened in (Connecticut) It wasn't a monkey it was a Chimpanzee! They are so much stronger than Humans I don't think they should ever be Pets - there is no way that it can ever be safe. She actually had both her hands ripped off and he ripped off her eyelids(she is blind now), nose and mouth from what I understood. I did not get to see her on Oprah But it has been on our local news off an on since it happened. It is a very sad story.

That was really terrible. I feel for the lady who had her face torn off. I just want to make a correction here. Chimpanzees are not monkeys. They are apes. And if I am not mistaken, among all living creatures, chimpanzees' DNA are the closest to that of humans, so they are the animals that most resemble us.

Monkeys, apes or whatever--- they are all the same to me! And I bet that if we had not been socialized we might still be dragging our mates around by the hair and ripping faces off too!! I think their resemblance to us is one of the things that freaks me out so bad about them. Ooh! and Ugh!

I actually like Monkeys and Chimps but I have to be honest I would not keep them as a Pet They are not made to be Pets like a Dog, Cat or any other Pet Something must have upset the Monkey for him to do that if he was her Friends Pet then, she must have known the Monkey, so something must have upset him to do this and it does not have to be anything that the Lady herself did It is sad very sad

This was a horrible situation for everyone involved. For the most part wild animals should never be made pets. I know it works out in some situations, but it usually turns out badly somehow.

I heard about this when it first happened on the news. There were some people at work that were talking about that Oprah show today. I didn't see it but everyone was really effected by it. There was one guy that said he even had to change the channel when she showed her face because it disturbed him so much. Monkeys are very unpredictable and I'm thinking they should be left to the wild. It is a terrible story.

I watched this poor lady on Oprah yesterday and I just couldn't believe the resolve and grace she had about the whole thing. For me I would not want to live this way. I just wouldn't want to not be able to do for myself. I wouldn't want to be dependent on anyone. If I was the one who owned the chimp and this happened to my friend oh God I don't know If I could actually go on living. I would feel so sick and I would have to pay all her doctor bills for sure. If I didn't have the money I guess I would have to get a loan. As for having the Chimp as a pet it should not be allowed and I know I wouldn't have a wild animal in my house like that ever. It is a horrible story all around and its so true that God will only give you as much as you can handle. She is handling it and I give her nothing but my blessing.

oh that was really terrible i had the same bad experience when i was about 6. our neighbor had a pet monkey and it was tied next to their front door. i was playing at that time when my mother called me for lunch and as i ran towards our door, i forgot that monkey was there..it jumped out..and scratched my nose/nose bridge which was almost my right eye. i arrived in our house with bloody face too. fortunately, the scar is almost invisible now unless someone would really stare at my nose and never have a phobia..but sure i will never have a pet like that

I couldn't believe this story when I had read it. I was in shock! And the Chimps owner stuck up for the Chimp! I feel SO bad for the injured lady. I couldn't imagine how she must feel. But, she keeps on truckin on. God didn't want her to leave yet, and gave her another chance at life! I can understand how you would stick up for your animal, BUT, this is horrible! Why would the Chimp even do this? Did the lady provoke it? Probably not. Life is short! You have to be thankful for EVERYTHING that you have! I would feel HORRIBLE if I had an animal that did this to my best friend. I wouldn't be able to live with myself afterwards.

Wild animals are just that, wild animals. Their behavior is what is necessary for them to survive in the wild. People who insist that their wild or exotic pets are tame and love them are sadly mistaken.I think I remember when this happened, but I had it in my mind that it was an orangutan. I bet that is from my memories of the Poe story "The Murders in the Rue Morgue".

Thank God! A sane and rational person. Monkeys are just so bizarre and make this hideous noise. I just don't understand why anyone would want them as a pet. It was on Oprah today and she said chimp several times. Horrible.

I love wild animals but they are not meant to be pets. They need to be in their natural habitat. I saw that Oprah show too. Seems there were a few early warning signs with this chimp that the owner overlooked and laughed off. I don't blame her for suing her friend. I'm sure it is hard but still the financial burden should not be this lady's . I think Oprah's show would have been even more insightful had this friend been a guest as well. Very brave and strong lady.

He had jumped on her back and ripped out a huge clump of hair. This was when he was still really young. There was another incident but I don't remember what she said it was. She was afraid of him anyway. I just heard they found an anti-depressant in the ape that the owner was giving him to calm him down.

Chimps are apes, not monkeys. Monkeys are cute little boogers who poo on your clothes while some tout gets you to pose for an overpriced photo at a seaside resort. Monkeys go with barrel organs and Walt Disney flicks. Apes are big, hairy brutes with damn great teeth, even bigger muscles and lots of attitude. When they look at you, their eyes aren't saying: "Hey, I'm cute - photograph me!" They're saying: "Lady, if you know what's good for you you'll chuck the banana now. I'm an OMNIVORE." Yeah, yeah, I know all about David Attenborough and those lowland gorillas. Just one question people: Just WHY do you think he was whispering so much? Be truthful now! Short answer - She had it coming. Never put a chimp in pyjamas.

I think this is exactly why people want them as pets. They see them in movies and such and think they are all tame and cute. Who had it coming? A friend who was helping her friend with an animal? Come on. The other lady was dumb enough to have the animal. Now she is being sued. Just horrible all round.

I saw that story...and yes, it was a sad story. However, the information told that she is now suing her friend kind of dissappointed me. Listening to the 911 conversation, it is clear that the owner of this monkey loved her friend, and would not have wanted any harm done to her. They both shared a home together for some time. I hope there are other reasons, unforeseen, that she is suing...possibly it is her family that is pushing for it, possible her own medical insurance is doing the actual suing, and just maybe her medical insurance could not cover all the expenses that this woman will have with all her extensive surgeries. I just hope that she isn't suing out of spite, because it would make this sad story go sour. I feel bad for the both of them.

I just heard about it with Oprah's show today. It was so horrific to me that I wanted to see how many of my fellow mylotters would have a wild animal and how they felt about this horrible thing. She said she doesn't feel any pain.
