What on earth is that chair doing there?

Did you ever see an object that just did not belong where you saw it and wondered what the heck it was doing there? Why had someone left it there? I was coming back from my doctor's on the freeway and we come down an off ramp and over to the side was another onramp.and along side this onramp was a green plastic lawn chair. It looked new and like someone had used it to wait for someone but on an on ramp? If if had been on the freeway I would have just thought it had fallen out of someone's moving van or you=haul van, but this was on an on ramp. I don't know why it struck me as funny but it did. So now I am asking have you ever some object that just did not belong where you saw it and you really wondered what on earth that was doing there? Another little ways down was a bus stop.

When I lived in Arizona, they decided to put some "art" on one of the freeways that went around the city. Imagine my surprise when I saw a toilet atop the freeway wall!! A little time later there was a giant coffee pot, then a sink, then a huge empty urn. The freeway was littered with bathroom and kitchen equipment and they spent a couple million dollars on that junk--all from someplace back east, not even by a local artist. It all came down a few years later, what a waste of money but Arizona is very good at that. It was tasteless and unremarkable except for the shock value.

hi dragon I used to live In tempe Arizona years back. I read something about that art on the freeways too, a while back I think it was. I can imagine it would be a shock to see' some of that stuff.when we lived in tempe somebody thought it was funny and hung a life sized doll in a tree by its'neck, so people driving bye thought it was real and called the police. talk about a waste of money, police cars and an ambulance with paramedics all out and for what a darned big dummy. wow. They'should have found the person who played the trick and fined them a whopping big fine.

Yes, alot of the time. Recently i saw one of those big round chairs w/frame made of cane. It was sitting way out near the edge of a property like near the alley. not close enough to be thrown out as trash. I and everone i know of loves these chairs. Why would it be way out away from the house? Or outside at all. As if the owners didnt care about it. I couldnt really tell if it was damaged or not. But if it rained or snowed the cushion sure would be ruined. It just seemed odd to me that they had one of thoses chairs out in the yard very far from the house. Also today walking to the bus stop i saw a little girls coat laying out in a back yard at the corner of the property near the sidewalk. Since its been cold the last few days i didnt understand why a little girl would take their coat off outside and leave it laying on the ground.

hi jdyrj777 I know the ones you are talking about and if I had seen it I bet I would have made my husband pick it up, I do like them. I bet the little girl got too warm and off went the coat as I have seen little kids do that. they do not realize until a little later it would be much too cold once they took off their coats.kids can do the oddest things.

yes that really would be the most honest way to do that. I remember in one apartment complex we lived, some one had dumped some old pink stuffed chairs so my son brought two of them up to our apt. but after a couple of days I found these ant like things crawling out of them then it dawned on me those were not ants, they were termites eating on the wood part of the chair. those chairs then went back out to the dumpster in a hurry.

I bet if you had your husband pick it up it wouldnt be out in the yard either. Believe it or not i found one of those chairs at a yard sale for $5. Everyone is jealous of me for that. Rather than stealing that chair i think i would haver knocked on the door and ask if i could have it. Or offer to give her a few $$. If that didnt work i may just steal it. But i wanted it for my daughter.

hi gabs I wondered about that because if it was in a traffic lane it could have caused an accident when someone swerved to avoid hitting it and plowed into someone else. Ihad an odd thing happen to the access bus I was taking to get to my doctor. we kept hearing this flapping noise that sounded like a blown out tire.so the driver pulled off onto a little side street. she got out to examine the four tires and came back chuckling. she had a two liter plastic pepsi bottle all flattened and warbled out of shape in her hand. it had caught in the wheel housing and was going round and round and flapping. no flat tire no blow out after all.

I was driving down a street when I saw a bright colored toy on the sidewalk I pulled into the parking lot and drove back up and had the roomie's nephew jump out and get it... After picking it up, I could well see WHY it was on the sidewalk - it made LOTS of noise at the least provocation (like turning a corner.) However, we took it home, gave it to the dog and she LOVED it. It was one of the few toys she didn't disembowel, and she played with that until the nice stopped, it barked, went "weeee" and other stuff when it moved or was tossed. She would throw it up in the air, it was fun while it lasted and it lasted a long time... wish we could find another - I'd even BUY it!

My cat found a bag that had potpourri in it ( I use old pretty gift bags and put the old potpourri in it and reapply scent). The cat decided to play "flower girl" and throw it all over the floor and send it flying and scooting everywhere.

Honestly, there's a saying among cat fanciers, that anything not nailed down is a cat toy, anything nailed down is negotiable... But the ONLY way to get a cat to play with a toy is to tell them 1 - it isn't a toy and 2 - it isn't theirs and they must not touch! You should'a seen us with the new cat tree. We made a little sign, said "keep off" and they LOVED it! but since we made the sign on a post-it note, it lasted about 30 seconds...

hi ElicBxn how funny and it goes to show that dogs and cats can have fun with the offest things. I lost the cap off my bottle of tums, and saw my roomies cat' playing with it,he would toss it, then scoot it, then pounce on it, and yet she had a zillion toys for that cat and he really did not touch them. He also liked 'my watch which was minus its strap. I laid it on top the bedside table when I went to bed, and in the night he took his paw and swiped it onto the floor. woke me 'up playing with it. lol lol lol.

I have not seen such a thing, but if I saw one, I would think that it must be weird that the stuff was not in the place where it should belong to. Based on the situation you have observed, I guess that maybe it was a chair that was abandoned. Could it be?

hi fulltank I don't think you really understood my question. I was not talking about vendors but inanimate objects that'seemed out of place to you. Did you ever see something that was not' where it should be,not a person but a thing? My example was a plastic lawn chair sitting alongside a freeway onramp. It did not belong there so wondered how it got there? why it was there?

Vendors do not belong to pedestrian lanes where it should be used by people. Students in uniforms does not belong to internet cafe. Politicians do not belong to casinos. Thats what I was taking when you said not belong there. I think it still applies to your discussions.

hi fulltank yes I think that could work too, have you ever been to Mexico or rather Baja California, talk about vendors ,little street kids go out between cars coming in over the border selling paper flowers and other things. I cannot understand how they keep from getting hit, oh of course the cars are moving slow.then on the streets in tijuana vendors,,mostly kids, will be selling everything you can think of . it is really interesting.

Well my husband used to hitch hike, and that's where you have to hitch hike.. on the on ramps, so maybe someone was waiting for a ride there ... the chair could have come from someones backyard cause he was tired of standing, maybe he stole it.. or... maybe it DID fall off someone truck, and another person seen it there so they where nice enough to stand it up incase whoever lost it was looking for it! YEA! I have seen some weird things and thought WTH when i seen them, but off the top of my head i can't recall any except the most recent.. a small childs bike was in the bushes near my house for like a week. Not in someones yard.. and not really in plain site, but if you where walking close you could see it. The bike was small enough that i'd HOPE the parent of the bike owner would not have let them ride the bike alone.. So maybe a BIG kid moved it from the small childs yard (which would be rude and mean) and i hope the bike got returned to the owner.. it was a nice little bike.

hi hatley! ;) Well that sounds cute, your son... but i think the owner of this bike was TOO young to be wandering around on their own.. especially on a busy road with no sidewalks.. I am nervous walking with my kids.. even when they are in the wagon. This street needs a sidewalk badly.. Wonder what i can do to get that done.. Guess that's a new topic.

hi sissygrl here in Ca you have to go to the city dads, I mean the city counsel and tellthem you need the streets repaired. I was always pretty careful when my two were little but it was far enough back that things were not quite as wild as they are now. we had a lady who lived behind us at that time, she would come through our house on the way to the street, looking for her little boy and the baby. she wou ld always tell us that little JOhny took the baby in the carriage and she just did not know where he was. she was a southern with a deep accent and she did not seem the least bit upset that her five year old had taken his baby sister for a ride in the baby carriage. I would have been so worried I would have called the police and started a neighborhood search.Yet they were so lucky nothing bad ever happened to those two kids. wow.

hi sissygirl I really for a few minutes wondered if it had been used by hitch hikers trying to get a lift onto the freeway. You telling about the little bike reminded me of the time my son left his new tricycle in a weedy empty lot cause he wanted to play with his new wagon and have the trike near by. I had to explain to him to not leave his toys' in an empty lot as someone would think it was thrown away and just take it. Little kids are so innocent at that age.wow.

It could have been anything. I just might have fallen out of a vehicle. This is kinda off subject but my dad ran into things like this before. He said that after his grandparents adopted him and he became of age to go out and do things at night he snuck out as much as possible. He said he could brag that the house would be darker than night and he knew his way around without even turning a light on. I laughed and thought he was crazy. He said that it had been going on for a while and one particularly drunk night he came home and tripped over the love seat by the back door in the kitchen. My grandma got out her wet dish towel and beat him senseless. I laughed so hard that I just about peed my pants. I also encountered a situation like yours. My friend and I were on our way to a club and stopped by a truck stop to grab some stuff and there was an actual couch right by the diesel pumps. I thought that was odd and said something to the cashier who told me that they were waiting on someone to pick it up. Some lady was arguing with a guy in her truck and when he went in to pay she pushed it off the truck and left him there. She said that man made a phone call and started walking towards the highway and didn't even look back at the couch. I thought it was funny. Stranger things have happened though! Have a good night

Plastic lawn chair and folding chair - came downstairs this morning and they were in my living room. Was wondering if my husband was having a beach party last night. He had brought them out for my friend. The desk chair she was using was hurting her back.

hi dawnald oh that makes sense as some desk chairs are really killers. my son got me this one for a whole five dollars from a thrift shop.when he gave it to me I could see why, the mechanism that you could use to lower it or raise it higher was all kerflooey and when you got the thing to a reasonable height if you leaned back on it it would suddenlyzoom down to a childs height leaving you sitting there with the keyboard at nose level. he repaired it however and now it works just fine. For the first few days I still perched on the edge of my seat waiting for it to collapse down so my nose waslevel again with the keyboard. However it stayed fixed so thats great.

We have a portable TV set on the footpath in our street that has been there for a couple of weeks and there is no scheduled household goods pick up any time soon. I think it may be the people who used to live across the road from us who have just moved out. They were notorious for putting old furniture on the street and just leaving it there which made the place look terrible. The council already had a word to them to no avail, they are nice people but extremely inconsiderate when it comes to our street, anyway they’re gone now and left one more item! (LOL)

hi paula wow you would think someone would grab it just because. we used to live in an apartment complex that had a huge dumpster, and a lot of people who were moving out would dump old furniture into the dumpster instead of paying the cost of moving it a long distance. we picked up several really nice pieces of furniture this way. Nobody ever knew that they had been throw aways once cleaned and revarnished

A lot of people do that when there is a household goods pick up scheduled. Everybody puts their stuff out and some come and grab it. My husband picked up really nice office chair and doll's pram from the verge; both were clean, new looking and perfect for us. It is true that one man's trash is another man's treasure!

Good morning Hatley, how about a car floating out to sea. I saw that when the weather had been really bad and a few people had parked in rather stupid places close to the edge of the sea. The road which is well known for flooding in torretential rain runs towards the sea under a small bridge, a couple of cars were stuck under the bridge being pushed by the flood water but one had been pushed right through and was on its way to who knows where. You had to be at the top of the other road to see it.

hi good morning thea and the sun is shining.lol people will take such chances with their cars. a car will float I guess just so there was nobody in it. The last time we have really bad rains, which was a good year or more there were pictures on the'news of a woman and a baby trapped in her SUV with the water 'right up to the windows of her car. she had actually tried to cross this road that was completely flooded, i mean it just did not make sense. the police had been on the televison and all other media telling people not to use these roads. they did finally manage to get her and her baby out of the car just before it sank. and I was horrified when they showed pictures of her later. the ditsy woman was a good eight months pregnant. and to take such chances deliberatly driving into water that deep, with a two year olad and her pregnant?

Hi Hatley That is funny. And with a bus stop just down the road..LOL I have seen things like that before. Here a while back I was driving thru town and saw a recliner chair sitting by a swimming pool. The funny thing about this was a woman reclined in it sunbathing. LOL..I don't think they made recliners for sun bathing do you!..LOL... I started laughing so hard that I had to pull over for a minute to get it out of my system.. Very cute discussion. I keep imaging how much effort it must have taken that lady to get her recliner out by the swimming pool. h ehe he.

Hi Hatley, I truly see this quite frequently and can never quite understand the meaning of it but on telephone wires I would see a pair of sneakers thrown up and over the lines and just hanging there. They don't look as if someone could actually throw them up because the wires are so high up so is it the telephone wire guys that do it? Once I saw a pair of sock thrown up as well. That would probably be one of the strangest out of place thing that I remember seeing. Another is a giant clothes pin statue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is enormous and simply just a clothespin. It looks as though a giant had been doing hanging clothes to dry and dropped a clothespin with it landing upright and someone froze it in place, so it looks odd and out of place to me amongst all the buildings in the city, it needs a clothesline and a giant.

hi lina machina ah yes a giant clothes pin sure it would need a giant clothesline plus the giant too. the first time I saw this giant cube standing on one edge was on the freeway. It is supposed to make people aware of the large science museum behind it I guess. it is truly huge and balanced on one corner. I mean it always maked me wonder what would happen to it if we had a pretty big earth tremor, would it topple?

Hiya Hatley..Could also have fallen out of the back of someone's pick-up. I see a lot of items on the road that shouldn't be there and pretty much chalk it up to the stuff falling or blowing off an open truck or trailer. Maybe it was tied down but the ties came loose. Orrrrrrrr...if there are houses nearby and there was a windy day, the chair could of blown out of someone's yard.

When hubby and I lived in Arkansas, we had our God kids up that summer and we were going to the store. On the way there, there were some kids toys in the middle of the road! They appeared to be in perfect condition so we stopped and hubby ran to get them, sure enough, they were in perfect working order so we cleaned them all up and gave them to the kids in which they had a blast playing with. One was this recording machine like thing and they constantly recorded themselves while playing with all the other buttons which were nothing more than noise makers. lol
