My nephew is 6 years old. A few days ago, he was found to be astigmatic and far-sighted. He is wearing glasses now to improve eyesight. Actually, I often see more and more little children wearing glasses. Why does this happen? Is it the bad effect of TV and computer? What about you? Do you wearing glasses now? When did you started to wear it. Why do you become near-sighted or far-sighted? Thank you for sharing.

I have worn glasses since I was in 4th Grade. Kind of a mix of reading a lot + in the dark and staring at a screen for hours. Though I am getting contacts in March

It was probably genes too - my entire family (cousins, grandparents, parents, siblings, ect.) has glasses or contacts.

No I do not. I fear that I will have to soon though as I am starting to have a little trouble reading small print. I am lucky though. I am 44 years old and have never had to wear any type of corrective eye wear. So while I am upset that my eyesite is starting to go I have been lucky up to this point.

I wear glasses. I got prescribed them in the last few years. My daughter wears them. She is the only one out of my four. She really fights about wearing them tho. And I think it has actually compromised her learning. She wears them due to a lazy eye that then lead her eye to not focus as she was growing.

I wear glasses to ,in my case I am nearsighted.I have been wearing glasses since 1992 ,wow that is for 17 years wow ,how time has gone by.When I first got mine i was somewhat apprehensive about wearing it because I feel that I would be teased.I have since gotten overthat fear and now I am a competent glasses wearer. Like you say I am also seeing many more people wear glasses and I am thinking that television and computer must tbe the reason after all that what most of these students do anyway.I think in my case it was from using areas that werent well lit ,in fact I used to use lamp to study

Now that most of the games that stimulate a kid's mind involves a monitor, this could be one of the reasons why your nephew is wearing glasses. A lot of radiation coming from the tv or computer monitor is bad for the eyes. I also have astigmatism and I have to admit when I was younger, I felt that wearing glasses was the 'in' thing! I would always wear my dad's glasses when he's asleep because I thought I'd acquire his near-sightedness and eventually wear one. Now that I need to wear glasses, I don't. I easily get distracted with glasses and feels uncomfortable with it.

I am 25 and I have been wearing glasses for 15 years now.I am myopic(short sightedness)and have lived three fifth of my life wearing glasses. You are right when you mention the effect of computer and TV as excessive watching of both does lead to weakening of eyes. That is the reason why you have anti-glare screens for PCs and distant viewing advised for the" idiot-box". Other factors that lead to the deterioration of vision could be incorrect posture while reading, insufficient light while reading and hereditary factors. Our lifestyles have changed a lot in the last 15-20 years and exposure to too much of IT and visual media has had a harmful effect on our health and eyes have been the worst affected. But as the ailments have increased,so have the treatments. There are lasik treatments available for vision correction these days and they seem to be gaining ground.Although not all ophthalmologists recommend it.So there's absolutely no reason to despair.Let your nephew stick to the glasses for some time and if he has too much of a problem continuing with them, you have got multiple other options at your disposal.

I have been wearing eyeglasses for more than a decade now. Being in the computer is one of the causes of my poor vision. I am near sighted. I hope my little girl won't have poor eyesight just like me.

I don't wear glasses and I only have a little bit of astigmatism, but that's since I was born, so you can't say my sight has become worse. The funny thing is that everyone surrounding me has sight problems, short-sighted, far-sighted, etc. Most of the times I will look around the iris of people not wearing glasses to see if they're wearing lenses, and most of the times they actually are. Probably tv, computers, or too small letters in textbooks are the reason why every day more and more people is having sight problems.

I don't wear regular eye glasses, but when I go outside I must wear sunglasses and when I drive I have to wear a special type of sunglasses called Driving Glass that cut down on sun rays AND glare from lights. I have photophobia, which is a sensivity to light.

Astigmatism is something I was unaware of until my own 9yr old son had to be put on glasses. I’ve always worn glasses since I was six and I’ve grown up hearing my mom complain all the time that it was due to too many story books and TV…I thought it was genetic coz practically everybody in our house is on glasses. Now in hindsight, I think we all are somewhat astigmatic in the family…astigmatism is something which I guess many kids suffer from but as parents we don’t take it seriously enough…we think its due to too much TV or computers but from what I heard at the doctors, astigmatism can be improved a lot if the kids are made to wear glasses from a very small age. I now rue the fact that had I taken my son earlier maybe his improvement would have been better. Its good that your nephew is wearing his glass from this early age…if he wears them regularly, there’s a fair chance that his eyesight might become normal again.

Hi, Kathy! First, welcome to myLot! Oh, that is so young for a child to wear glasses and it won't be comfortable. Both of my nephews love to play games and I know it will have bad effect for their eyesight. I could not see things clearly when there are far, so, I am short sighted. I wear glasses, but I prefer to wear contacts if I go outside. I started to wear glasses when I was 18. I guess it could be because I always read books in the dark. However, I seldom wear it as I did not feel comfortable and my degree wasn't that high. I only began to really wear it when I was 23.

No I dont wear glasses. But I it suits on some people. but as you said that your 6 old yr nephew is wearing glasses than it is really the matter to think it over. he is too young to handle glasses. i think it should be blamed to diet and junk food.

Far-sighted or near-sighted people get this eyesight because of their bad habit when using their own eyes when reading, watching television and computer. On of the factor is not enough light when reading, watching the television or computer screen very close and don't straining their own eyes. Some people like to watch so many tv program and as result they are ruining their own eyes. I guess in this era, where everywhere is full of digital screen, the risk to catch this kind of eyesight will be bigger.

I'm sorry to see more and more classmate wearing glasses. I don't think It due to computer or TV because I play computer a lot but I still have a good eyeght. In my country--China,most students get short-eyes related to The overweight-lessons.
