Hello I have a Compaq Laptop and it just keeps getting slower and slower. I tried deleting files, music, and pictures, but its still very slow. I checked my computers properties and it says I have 53.6 GB of used space, and only 2.18 GB of free space. I have no idea how this is possible, since I deleted almost everything on this laptop. Also It always takes long for firefox to open, and if I walk away for more then a minute from my laptop firefox freezes and I have to wait for it to unfreeze to resume my internet activities. Anyone have any idea and or advice? Thanks allot in advance. : )

Usually, when you open new address on the browser it'll use your memory without clearing the capacity until the browser is closed. Lately, I checked and I found my browser too much using memory if we open it too long and always increase. The browser also put your password and all your activity to your hard disk in temporary internet and never delete it. So, if you deleting some file may be your hard disk still not enough space because those temporary.

Deleting files from your laptop is not enough. If there are unwanted entries in the system registry of which i am sure yours has, your PC's speed will slow down greatly. Try to run a registry cleaner from a trusted source. Check disk utility will also try to correct errors on your disk sectors.Run check disk regularly. The other thing is that there could be the presence of malicious software on your PC. If you have an antivirus software, keep it updated and run scans almost daily. if this does not change, try to use other antivirus software from ONLY trusted sources. If you cant manage run online scans from providers like microsoft, avast and kaspersky. i am hopeful that with these few points, your PC will improve. By the way how big is your RAM?

EdTv00, It would really help if you could disclose your laptop's specs and current operating system(s) used, before anyone can actually determine the root of your problem. It would also help to know if you have antivirus and spyware programs installed and if they are up to date or not. Also, what is your internet connection, as well. Have a nice day.

in most case pople will tell you to reinstall the os. but what this method does usefully is only reinstall the harddisk. so just try to delete you harddisk device and reinstall it. it will take you only few minutes but will be effective.

Deleting files just sends them to the recycle bin. You have to empty the recycle bin before the space is ready to be reused. If you only have that small amount of free space you computer will slow down because it needs a certain amount for swap files or something like that to operate. I would suggest you also delete the temporary internet files (clearing the cache in Firefox). The best way of clearing out crap is to use CCleaner which is free to use. However with you lack of free space I do not know if there will be enough room to install it. Maybe consider uninstalling some large program you never use, that might help.

Compaq laptops are famous for being very low quality and crashing easily. Firefox cache can occuppy a lot of space in your harddrive, so you can try deleting it. If it still goesn on that way, I recommend you to format the hard drive and start over again.
