Would you listen to foreign music though you couldn't understand the lyrics?

I am an avid fan of foreign music. Though I might not understand the lyrics, the melody and the rhythm of some foreign music soothes me. I find foreign music interesting and the style differs from every country. I enjoy listening to Chinese and Korean music. I am currently listening to Super Junior, DBSK, TaeYang, Shinee which are from Korea and SodaGreen, Jay Chou, Ambrose Hsu and S.H.E. which are from Taiwan. How about you, what do you think about foreign music? What artist do you listen to?

Hi sachi! It is said that music has no language. It beats, rythem and percussion are good and ring bells in the ear, I enjoy the music, irrespective of its lyrics. It is always fun to hear different kind of music as it increase our sphere of knowledge about music. Sometimes listening to folk and regional music could be really touching and I do that also.

I am a very big fan of Music. It doesn't matter which language the lyrics of the songs are.If the music of the song is good I dig into it,I love it.The internal message that the music carries is conveyed to me,and I don't need the lyrics to explain it to me. I love listening Foreign music even though I don't understand their lyrics.

I suppose it depends on what music you're being exposed to,whether it be from your own cultural background or one that you'd be interested in hearing from, the radio,TV,or internet or what clubs you go to or what you share with your friends..Here in Northern Ireland, the UK National TV and Radio stations play almost exclusively only English Language music, although Irish Music and Language features on the Irish Nationals..There's a video on Youtube called "Where the Hell's Matt?" that I've discovered and enjoy..it Features a Guy (Called Matt!) who's travelled to countries around the world and basically has created a video documentary of him visiting the countries and dancing on camera with the Locals..It has an Indian Music song called "Praan" as a soundtrack which I don't understand, but it perfectly underscores the joyful silliness of a bunch of people expressing themselves in the international language of a silly dance!

I'd just like to Mention "Horslips" here, who were/are THE original Irish (Celtic) Folk Rock Band who recorded many albums and toured Ireland,Europe, and the US in the 70's, and broke up in the early '80's..They have recently reformed and I went to see their reunion "Tour" of Belfast and Dublin-We went to the Belfast concert-a very atmospheric gig, seeing them Live again after a long break...There are clips from the concerts on Youtube if You'd like to see and hear more of them!

I do like Irish music too especially when the music is a bit traditional. I am a fan of music artists from Ireland like Sinead O'Connor The Corrs, Cranberries, Boyzone, U2 and Enya.

Hello. I do listen to different kinds of music, pop, oldies, jazz, classical, and so on. And, yes, I very much like listening to foreign music too. When I travel to foreign countries, I often buy CDs of the music of the countries. I have a collection of CDs, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, German, Malaysian, Italian, and more. Foreign songs and music are very beautiful and very enchanting too !

I like different music in foreign languages. For example Italian, French. When it sounds beautiful and fine melodic line there. Often I play the music from one of songs that I like on piano.

I wouldn't listen to music whose lyrics' language isn't familiar to me. I wouldn't like to be offending those who do understand them should I be in a situation where I'm listening to music that are swearing, if you know what I mean. I've never liked songs for their tone or melody alone. I'm fond of lyrics as well.

Yes I would because music is a universal language so it can reach to others even though they cant understand the words because the melody can still resonate with them.I remember a time when all I could pick up on my radio was indian music and I had a ball listening to it

Foreign languages and accents give vocalists their own personal style and can give some singers a really unique tone that would be hard to impersonate. I do like listening to music in different languages because I would be ignorant to only accept music in my own language because there could be bands out there that would change my whole musical perspective I'm just not finding them because they don't speak English. So stay open minded just because a band can't speak English doesn't mean they still don't have a beautiful vision or story to bring forth to you.

Yes I would listen to the song even if I don't understand the lyrics, but only if I love the rhythm or music of the song. For me music is more important than lyrics as I like instrumentals more than songs.

Yes, I listen to music in Spanish, French, Japanese, and other European and Asian languages even if I cannot understand the lyrics because I understand the emotions in the song. I feel the emotions of the music.

No, basically I am a Tamilian(Tamilnadu(speaks Tamil language)person from India). Though I am a lecturer in engineering college, I ask my students to listen music in Mother Tongue, so that we might get more exposure towards the music and we gain more knowledge.. I believe that innovative ideas will come only in the way of mother tongue.. we think through our mother tongue and we try to expose in foreign languages.. so that our full creativity will be resisted... Likewise, I like to listen music only in my mother tongue... but, due to circumstances, I am forced to listen some foreign language musics..

Yes, sometimes I do find myself listening to foreign music, regardless of whether I understand the lyrics. I can't name any artists, because when I listen to such music, I usually just stumble upon it somewhere, like in a movie or on the radio, but I don't usually go buy/download it. An exception was Nydia Rojas, a Mexican singer, that I was crazy about in high school. I was studying Spanish then so I understood little bits of her songs and would actually take the time to sit and translate the ones I liked the best so I would know what I was singing along with. I did the same with some Shakira in those days too. I live relatively close to the Mexican border, so there are several Spanish-only radio stations here, and sometimes I have to pause on one - so much of that music just makes you want to dance! And you don't need to know the words to dance! :) I've also enjoyed and danced around the house/car to some Jamaican, Irish, Italian, Japanese, African, and South American music. I just love music. It definitely brings another level of enjoyment when a song has lyrics that I understand and that mean something to me, though! :)

Hi Sachii315,I have a couple of the same tracks in different languages as the lyrics, even if I don't understand them, add to the accompaniment. Mother Earth is a french/english collaboration of french rap, english lyrics and is fantastic. A big while back Kelly Velance (if that's how you spell the name,)released 'Kiss' which was originally a turkish number one hit. English lyrics to turkish music. The original was a total floor stomper in the resorts whereas KV 'English' version didn't quite fit the back beat and was a bit of a flop as far as I'm concerned. Bangra beats are great too and my favourite dance track ever is 'Yaki Yaki' don't know who its by (my partner would be able to tell me) but a great, great, great dance track that has been mixed, remixed and still doing the circuit now after being released about 10 years ago. Party on people!!!!!!! In whatever language you like!!!!!!

And let's face it for many, the first words learnt in any foreign language are the swear words. I know rude words in Italian, french, spanish, and have touched upon japanese to chinese so I would certainly be listening out for these words and would then chose to avoid or not the track in question. English and american songs especially rap, street, punk, grunge, trance, techno any other source you can think of is full of swearing and offensive words so what's the difference. If you are listening to your music loudly and may be viewed as intrusive then choose your music selection wisely. Me, I love music whatever the language as long as it's good.

Hi, yes I always do. I understand Chinese, English, Cantonese and Hokkien dialect only but that hasn't stopped me from liking Japanese, Korean, Indonesia, etc music. I believe music has not language barrier. Although I don't understand them, but the song still touches me. For example, Utada Hikaru - First Love and Misia - Everything, they are a classic to me. And there is a lot more out there. Cheers
