'steal from the rich and give to the poor' indeed. clearly an evil communist if ever there was one. to adapt the legends to bring them more in line with current political thinking i suggest we either have robin hood the capitalist ('steal from the poor and give to the rich') or robin hood the down to earth regular family minded guy ('steal from everybody and keep it for myself'). are there any other fictional/semi-fictional/historical heroic figures whose stories desperately need to be amended? should we have william wallace and rob roy saying 'no bother england can have scotland, but it will cost you pal'? gandhi saying 'no violence unless you are really annoyed'? king arthur developing a round table with wings for particularly important knights? any others?

Hello, Judith. Well, for a start, Santa should have to have a Criminal Records Bureau check. I mean, going into strange children's bedrooms in the middle of the night? What's his game? And isn't it cruelty to reindeers to drive them all the way around the world in a single night? They don't even have an extra coat for the really cold places. And all these glasses of sherry he has - he should be sent on a drink/ drive awareness programme before next December 25th. The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that Santa is actually a menace to society. And shouldn't the elves who help him to make his toys be sent on an Elf n' Safety course to be on the safe side? (sorry - couldn't resist that!)

hi jb ye old blue bunny the only one I can think of at this early time in the morning is F.D.Rossevelt who kept promising that we would never have war, I hate War he said, Eleanor hates war, my joke making hubby used to say "and I hate Eleanor". but FDR did not say that of course. Well all the time he kept saying that the US was already in the process of gearing up to join the second World War.So it should have been amended to I hate war but we do have to help our friends out here, dont you know?. ah not clever at all but I am barely awake yet.

hiya - nice one. 'we would never have war. erm well except in certain circumstances'. are you still sleepy - it is only late afternoon here and i am starting to feel sleepy too. too cold to go out, no studying to do and i have cleaned the flat to within an inch of its life. my choices are reading, playing on here and watching dreadful christmas telly. the last one i am most certainly not doing.

WHAT A BUNCH OF DRIBBLE!! Robin was actually a hero to the people. Here is a link that you may want to read: http://www.robinhood.ltd.uk/robinhood/history.html I don't know if you were just trying to make a statement about politics or get a rise out of people but you didn't speak but may one actual truth about the historical figure at all.

celtic - this discussion is a jokey one. remember this is p.e. and not all the discussions that go up in here are serious. in fact most of them aren;t but like that use of the word 'dribble'

Hi rabbit, well much as I always loved the tales of Robin Hood I did think he was a bit wet behind the years living outside in the forest in the rain. I quite liked the Sherif of Nottingham but there again I always used to enjoy the baddies more than the goodies in my child hood reading, plus he was so much better dressed and had the old equivalent of a car. Now, other figures who need amending. Dracula of course, instead of being an evil blood sucking count he should obviously be portrayed as a haemphiliac living in his castle without a handy blood bank in the vicinity.

hello thea. here i should probably acknowledge you (and the politics team) for providing some inspiration here. . dracula - certainly, he has been demonised (or vampirised) for far too long i say.

Hello, Thea. I think it would be really nice and inclusive and empowering and any other politically correct crap you can think of if Dracula gave over his castle to hold Elton John's next aids benefit bash. Then he would learn that drinking blood isn't always the right career choice. So much better to rehabilitate than to punish with a stake through the heart, don't you think?

this has been done. look up 'old harry's game' - very funny radio 4 sitcom but you'll probably only get clips because the sodding bbc isn't allowing full episodes to be available online as they are trying to flog it.
@jb78000 (15139)

you can get radio online. bbc is a pest though because as i said it tries to flog its own shows so removes them online quickly.

Pakistan telling India, take Kashmir, pay us Cash, otherwise the world Bank will declare us bankrupt. Iranian president, talking to President Obama, let us talk peace, allow us to increase the price of oil by ten times, we will recognise Israel.

Well said, political is not same as english.
@jb78000 (15139)
28 Dec 09
ah yes - they were talking political. political is not the same as english by any manner of means, in fact quite often it means the direct opposite of what you think they said - an example is the classic 'we will not raise taxes' always means 'we will certainly raise taxes', another 'we will improve education/health/the environment/transport/etc' always means 'we will improve absolutely nothing except our expenses'

In our political realm, there seems to be a reversal of sorts...the robin hoods in that "forest" rob from the poor and give to the rich. Ugh.

Like thea, I am inclined to go against the stream. :) I think rich are not that bad! If they didn't amass wealth, they wouldn't be able to start industries, if they didn't start industries, not many of us would be employed, and if many of would be unemployed, then there would be no demand for goods including homes, and then there would be more unemployment, and more drop in demand for goods, till we reach food levels. Once that happens bunny we all will become thieves, so let us all praise the rich. As to Gandhi, we are really having an odd situation out here because of him. :( Somebody fasted like him, the central government promised him something which many others didnt want, now others are fasting because they dont want the man who started fasting first to get what he wants. On the whole it is good. Demand for food will be down, and therefore the prices. See what I mean? LOL.

hello sheriff_of_nottingham. ooops - vandana. i certainly approve of identifying with the villain or monster in something - i think lots of us did this sometimes. anyway have you got any other examples of folk heroes who stories should be rewritten?

Robin Hood's case can be summed up in a sentence; The ends does not justify the means.
