Hi, Edge!
One of the reasons I fell in love with this house and bought it almost 20 years ago was that it was out in the boondocks, in an area where additional building was forbidden. Well, politicians change zoning laws, and I think I'm sort of in the city now. Three blocks west is a WalMart. Three blocks east is a Target. Every fast-food place imagined in teen-aged daydreams is within a few blocks, as are shops of every kind. The tomato farm across the street is now huge new homes, and there are shopping strips everywhere. A sign recently went up saying that they're building the biggest mall in South Florida across from the Home Depot that's 4 blocks away. Traffic's become impossible, and I can hardly wait to retire and look for someplace quiet!

And I thought it was bad that a farmer next door to my parents sold a corner lot on top of them to someone who put in a trailer.
The great thing about where I live? People leave during these recessions. They go someplace else where the jobs are. Only a percentage of us die-hards stay, and even with that, we have farms that have turned into developments. I wish I could have bought the orchard that became all housing complex. Glad I don't live near that orchard. The great thing about living in a swamp is that it would take tons of money to rehab near where I live and it would still be surrounded by swamp and not be worth anything. So we're safe for now. But they're thinking of putting an overhead highway over our heads and they would condemn my property. Then we would have to find somewhere else. Bet the footings will sag. Esp. if they build in a dry (drought) year and don't realize it's swamp. The bullfrogs are soooo loud on my road in the summer time that you'd think we were breeding the dang things.

That made me remember the sounds we've lost - frogs and (yep,it's close to the Everglades) alligators, and all sorts of birds...

I could live without the alligators unless I can make steaks, shoes, and a purse out of them.

Most, not all, but most flour tortillas also have some corn starch in them - and most of those other things also have chilies in them, and I can't do those either - unless I don't want to poo for a while... and HURT when I finally do so. If I want to stop diarrhea, I'll take an Imodium...

We got a Walgreens pharmacy this year. As far as food establishments, we have a lot of mom and pop type barbecue joints showing up. One is in a store. Two others are in sort of rolling smokers, they basically sell street food, you buy it and take it home. Not too much is changing here one way or another.

We have a Walgreens being built where you can't even get to it. Used to be a radio station for a reason.
Great that Mom and Pops are starting up. Many places, they're the ones going under.
Sounds like the recession isn't hitting that sector of your area very hard. Thanks for responding and take care.

I don't get out much (to that part of town that is developing that is)so I am not sure what all is going in but we are a capitol city so we will get all the best of the best. We got a Cheesecake Factory afew years ago and have the favorite teen age hangouts in the Mall and all around it.
