I am deathly afraid of having surgery. I had surgury only once and it was a awful experience. I had something wrong with my feet and had to have surgery. When I woke up I was in all kinds of pain. I even had a reaction to the anstishia. They had a heck of a time waking me up. It was so awful I never want to go through that again. The pain was just so bad. I was in a wheel chair for almost a year. I had to go through physical thephy and learn how to walk all over again. I can walk now but I run weird and sometimes I still limp. I still have occasional pain. At least my feet are fixed though!

Hello! I am a nursing student and I usually assist in the operating room. I never had a surgery in my whole life, and when I assist people for their operative procedure, I feel kinda afraid whenever I think if I am in their place. The scalpels are very frightening to look at, especially when you imagine that it will drop on your skin at the time of your surgery. Creepy...

Yes I am a bit afraid because I had surgery years ago when I was in my mid teens and it was definitely no picnic in the park, and I still have occasional discomfort, so I cringe at the thought of ever needing to get another surgery. and let me just say that I understand much more then you'll ever know believe me, its never fun to have to go through any sort of surgery and hope that I'll never have to go through it agin.

Hello tuckersheri me too have gone through such an experience, actually was seriously ill due to some stomach problems and was hospitalised for two months period. At that time i was sharing the room with some more patients, there were few patients who had done surgery, and it was so teribble to watch them in pain and sorry state.Myelf am afraid of nothing, but yes don't like it as its an unhuman way.Surgery just doesn't fit in my principals way, and there are also other ways of treating our illness, the ayurvedic, natural healings.Even i completed my medication course quickly to avoid such an situation.Anyways keep it up with your health, also do prefer to go through other medications.Happy mylotting.

Wow, your experience was really horrible! I have gone through surgery, but it was because of my appendix, so I was out of the hospital pretty soon. However, I dislike hospitals and I'm scared that something can go wrong with the anesthesia, so I would prefer not to have surgery again.

I'm afraid of having surgery because it means problems with my health. I had plastic and cosmetic surgeries because of an fire accident. I don't remember anything, I don't actually know what's the feeling. But I prefer not to have experiences like this. Although, I'm a strong man.

Yes I too am terribly afraid of having surgery. In the last four years I have had to have three operations and after each surgery I have been ill. I had my last surgery last July and I should have been in and out within 24 hours, I was in there for nearly a week! I am so ill after, I sleep solid for 48 hours and have a heck of a time getting back on my feet! My blood pressure drops really low and that is what causes me my problems but my fear is that if I have to have another operation I may not wake up!

I am sorry about your awful experience with having surgery, tuckersheri. I have never had surgery before in my life. And I don't think that I could ever bare having it either. I am very scared of any complications that the surgery can bring upon me. My mother-in-law is another person that is afraid to go through surgery. I know many women that have had surgery on their arms and legs. I would also be worried about the pain that the surgery may give too. I don't think that I could ever manage having surgery!

You may have only had surgery once but it sounds pretty major!! I hope that's all you'll ever need. I'm not afraid of the surgery itself (just as well since I have to have more quite soon!) I am more concerned about the recovery time and temporary (I hope) loss of independence. I had 2 ops in 2008 and woke up crying my eyes out both times. The staff in the recovery room said they didnt think their choice of music was THAT bad (it was!!!!)

I ma afraid too ofing that involves cutting any part of me .i think we are so intricately made that any man who goes inside is likely to re-wire parts inccorectly and compound the problem even more.I hope I never have to but if I do ,I hope that I will have good doctors and there wont be any complications

Yeah I would say so. I just get really bad vibes from guys I don't know with blades going to cut into me. I'm also worried about the anesthetic because I'm pretty experienced at lucid dreaming and things like that so I've always been worried about being able to see them operating on me but not being able to talk from the gas and not being able to move.

Hi Tucker, I had two CS for my two sons. It's scary but what is important is saving your life and the baby like my case. so, it made me more strong when i thought of the positive side of surgery. now, i am not afraid of any surgery. i just pray hard that the anesthesiologist will be good enough not to give me an overdose. i am scared to be a veggie after the surgery.

Having to undergo surgery definitely sounds scary because people are afraid of pain, and most of them are afraid to die. But medically speaking, surgery is actually performed to lessen the pain caused by an existing disease, and more especially, to prolong the life of the patient, and improve his/her quality of life. So if the doctor said that you really have to undergo surgery to improve your condition, there's really nothing to be scared of, unless, of course, if your doctor is an unreliable one.

My grandmother had a surgery in feet area 5 months ago. She was really in pain at that time before surgery. Medicine and pain killer don't work anymore for her, so the doctor suggested to have a surgery. It was a pretty bad situation because she is old which increases risk in surgery. She had already undergone two surgeries at her legs and now she still feels a bit pain at her legs and can't stand at her feet properly anymore which pains me. And I once had a hepatitis B and when the doctor checked, I was in serious condition. After 3 weeks treatment I was able to do proper activities, but since then my stamina isn't what it used to be anymore. So, my point is that there are times especially when you're old enough and having severe condition, your body can't heal to the way it was used to be, or 100% recovery is rare after severe condition, so unfortunately, it's normal that your body doesn't feel like it was used to be. It doesn't mean that the surgery wasn't successful, because in the end it is your body that heals itself.

I'm terribly afraid of surgery. The only surgery I've had was when I had my wisdom teeth removed years ago, and that was scary enough! I hope I never have to have any other kind of surgery as I don't know how I'd ever survive it! LOL Happy mylotting!

Hi tuckersheri, So far I had gone through one small surgery and that was not on health issues. It was laparoscopic surgery. I agree the surgery must be painful and there are so many injections and we have to suffer those pain too. But once if our health demands a surgery then there is no point to scaring the same. We should face the reality and should gather all the courage to face the same. I hope you are absolutely alright now.

I am afraid of surgery also. My fear comes from having worked in hospitals for so many years. I know of all the mistakes that happen pre, post and during surgery. Also, I live in Florida where we have the worst hospitals in America. I do everything in my power to stay out of hospitals.

Hi Tuckersheri, I had an appendectomy 6 years ago. When I went into the emergency room because of unbearable stomach pain, I was told right then by the doctor that I needed an appendectomy right away. I just nodded and said yes rather than suffering the consequences of not undergoing it. Once, the doctor also had to take out the whole fingernail that was ripped off when I closed the door. I had to go several pains from needles for anesthesia. I am not afraid of any medical intervention. What is always on my mind is my concern of getting well. I feel I am braver than others (lol, but true) because I can take any pain from a number of needles at the same time. Most of my co-workers are just afraid at the thought of needles.

I think no body likes having any surgury, just like no body likes having some illness. Good health to everyone in mylot.

Actually I was born with a birth defect that has caused me to have over 20 surgeries in my lifetime. I am so used to what happens when you go under the knife that the whole idea is usually not very scary at all for me. It all depends on the circumstances for why I am having that really matters. The procedures and what is happening before I go under is really not that big of a deal to me anymore. I am in the same boat you were at this point in my life, but still facing 2 more surgeries before I will have my health back enough to start walking again, after so far almost 6 months in the wheel chair. Also due to issues with my foot and leg.
