Who do you have do your taxes or do you do your own?

I don't do my own, too confusing. We had a company, but they charged twice as much as the independent accountant that I have do it now. Plus the company hired my old boss who harassed me out of a job. I went from $100 for a not very complicated return to paying $60 for a complicated one. I think I paid too much. When I worked in a school, I found out that AARP, amoung others, will do people's taxes if they make less than a certain amount of money and their return isn't complicated, for free. I was over to someone's house and I found out that she makes very little money, but is paying $100 to have a company do her taxes. I told her they could be done for free if under a certain amount of money and not complicated. Since she is on a fixed income, I just saved her $100. Have you checked around to see if you could get your taxes donely more fairly, more inexpensively, or maybe for fee? Is your tax preparer a company, an independent, or something like AARP?

My husband used to do our taxes, but our younger son will take over as one of his in-laws works for an income tax company. I could do taxes myself, but I do not like to do them ever since when I was working, my boss did not take off enough and I found that I had to pay more. Our taxes are rather complicated as before my husband and his sister were doing the estate taxes for his mother and not long after she passed, he got als and so even though he could do them, his hands do not work. Now he has disability, and there is also the renovation tax credit, so we have to have someone who knows the tax laws and what is allowed to do them. There is no simple forms anymore.

Yeah, there are no simple forms for us either. I'm sorry your husband has als and his hands don't work any more. That must be difficult for both of you. My husband's Mother has become emotionally disturbed and her hands have become deformed and not working due to severe arthritis. Duo disabilities, no matter what they are, can be very hard.

Well, it's supposed to be just a random audit, most times unless something red flags them.

My ex was audited. He was working as a carpenter and yet the year we went on vacation and he took several supposed job interviews and such off on his taxes they never did. Weird.

When I went to get my taxes done last year, I went to H&R Block. They wanted over $300 to do my taxes..that's not even with any type of rapid refund option. I refused and said I would go somewhere else. The lady that was employed there actually said that she didn't blame me and that she would do the same thing. I found a small office with a few CPAs there and they filed for me for $55. I got more back by going to them because if the cost. The refund amount was the same. No way I will go back. They are a rip off.

Wow! That's the worst I've heard so far. Bad enough to charge a hundred when others are doing $60, but $300 when others are doing $55? Are they nuts? Our return could be less than the tax preparation some years. That is a rip off and I don't blame you.

Yeah, and what gets me it that they do that to poor people and people on disability, too. That's why I'm getting the word out about AARP doing it for free. People who make 15 thou or 12 thou shouldn't be paying H&R Block. Thanks and take care.

Well...they were charging for each piece of paper they filled out. I was itemizing last year and I hadn't done that before. They usually did charge me around $100 but they said that because I was filing different things..it would be more. I was a little irritated with the $100 and when they told me $300, I was through with them.

We do Turbo Tax, and Hubby does them. I leave it all to him at this time. It works out okay for us. I feel the computer program has less variables than a human being.

I have gone to H&R block for the last ten or so years. They have always been good to me and I have never had any problems. They also have a special thing that you can buy that they garantee gtheir work and a representative of the firm will go with you if you are audited. They are great!

I have a tax consultant who submits my returns but I take decisions about where to invest. I just give him my figures and he gets his clerk to fill up forms, etc which I just sign. I have been doing it for several years now as it makes things easy for me. May be the revised forms are easier but since he has been doing it for me for a tiny amount I wish to continue the practice.

If he's good and you don't pay very much, then it sounds like that's what is right for you.

For years I had an accountant do my taxes for a premium price. I did learn how to keep good records. I recently moved home to care for my aging parents (dad has Alzheimers) so I have to do everything, including taxes for the first time in my life. Dad lives on investment income so there was a lot to learn. But, the first year I did them, after getting so cunfussed, I went to Turbo Tax and I'll never do it any other way again. All you have to do is have your 1099s or whatever, have records of expenses, interest and all that other income and expense info - which you should have anyway. Go on line - they ask the question, you answer - you plug in the information they request, they figure it all out - even come back and go over items that were not completed, and question things that don't seem right. In the end, they tell you what you owe or get back, you file on line....and in three years, I have not had a single problem. It is easy, cheap and a good way to go. If you are filing a simple form, the cost is something like $25!

That sounds like a good way for you to do it. I have a friend that her income is $15 thousand a year and she is LD for numbers. She was supposed to pay me 36 dollars one day and she gave me 63. So she needs AARP, she switches things around on a computer. My brother-in-law made about $12 thousand and has a CD. He gets very upset and confused just trying to set up a Paypal account. So I can't see either of them doing Turbo Tax. Also, I can't see them affording Turbo Tax to begin with. So different people need different ways to get their taxes done. That's why there are so many ways to get it done. I'm happy you find one that will work for you. Take care.

My wife and I have some other income besides our full time jobs. We have a home-based business that makes us a little money and she has been known to do product demonstrations and mystery shopping, too. Each of those become deductions for mileage and maintenance of the cars. As you can probably figure, this tends to make our tax return a bit complicated. That is why I buy and use TurboTax every year. We usually come out of tax time with a refund.

Yes, the more incomes, the more complicated. Glad TurboTax works for you. If I'm audited, I like someone who can come with me and explain because I sure can't. Thanks and take care.

My company is withholding our taxes every payday. And every year, they have printed all our withholding taxes and all we need to do is sign our name. They're the ones who will forward it to the appropriate government agency. If one has a problem on it or need to clarify something, we just approach our accounting department for clarifications. Ordinary employees cannot get rid of taxes as it been automatically deducted on our salaries, but multi-national companies do. And, I don't think thats fair.

Wow, we do things differently in the Philipines. Here, we either overpay and get some money back or underpay and have to pay more in. So ours have to be done each year so we can see how much of each one. Yes, the differences here between what the rich pay and the average person aren't fair either. Every country seems to have some unfairness in taxes. Thanks for responding and take care.
