What weight loss method has worked best for you?

I was always thin as a child and young adult, but as I've gotten older, I have gradually gained weight. I've tried numerous weight loss methods involving diet, exercise, or a combination of diet and exercise. Some reduced fats or carbs, while others counted calories. So I'm wondering how you have dealt with a weight problem - what has and hasn't worked for you.

A bit drastic for many people but I loose weight when I go sailing across oceans! It is a mixture of constant exercise as your body reacts to the movement of the yacht for weeks on end and being sea sick at the beginning of the voyage until I get my 'sea legs'. Though sea sickness is not fun, it does empty the stomach and also keeps your diet light for a few days after. I take in several notches in my belt on long trips.

Wow, it doesn sound a bit grueling for you those first few days, but I suppose it's sort of like a fast which they say is good for the body every so often. The exercise alone sounds like a really good workout.

The "So What?" diet worked best for me. I didn't lose any weight but I could eat anything I wanted and as much of it as I could hold. I was just like you as a child. Thin. Too thin, actually. I had a hard time just maintaining the little weight I did have. Once I started taking medication for panic disorder, though, the pounds started accumulating. Actually, I lost about 25 pounds last year by just "adjusting" what I ate. I started eating more fruits and veggies and the pounds just dropped off. I did move around more as well. I have fibromyalgia and arthritis so it makes exercising hard, some days downright impossible but I was up and moving around as much as I possibly could be (except while myLotting, of course ). I stopped drinking anything with calories after about 8 p.m. and started drinking only water after 8. Replacing fruits and veggies from my usual snacking of whatever was around is what did the most good, I think. Oh! I also stopped adding sugar to anything and switched to Splenda or Stevia instead. Stevia does have a different taste than sugar but it's just as sweet. Splenda tastes just like sugar. The only problem with that is the cost. But, you have to decide whether to save a few dollars or lose a few pounds. Once the weight came off, it was easier to move around more so I can now eat sugar on occasion and the weight hasn't come back. I think that, as long as you don't treat a diet as a diet and do treat yourself every now and then to something you love, it's easier to stick with. It's when people try to lose a bunch of weight as fast as possible that diet's fail. It takes time to put on the weight, you have to give it as much time to take it off.

Very well said mentalward. It took a lot of good eating to put the weight on, and it's best to let it come off slowly so your body can readjust itself. I agree removing sugar is a big step that will make all the difference. When I don't eat sugar, my appetite is decreased for one thing. I use Stevia in place of sugar for my yogurt; I especially love apples and cinnamon with the yogurt with some ground flax seed added - I can imagine I'm eating a piece of apple pie. Thanks so much for your thoughts.

Hope you enjoy it like I do. I use raw apples, but I'm sure it would be great with cooked apples too, even more like an apple pie.

I once did my own kind of diet, I ate 1,200 calories a day, and made sure to walk three miles a week. That may sound like not a lot of exercise, but with the sensible diet, I did well. The weight came off at a nice pace. Weight Watchers worked for my mom. They really give a person a lifestyle to follow, not just a diet. And according to research, Weight Watchers has been the most successful "diet" program for people when it came down to how much weight a person lost AND them keeping the weight off for long periods of time. Whatever you do, don't forget the vegetables. Those help us burn off calories like nobody's business. I'm a black eyed pea girl myself. I like salad too, I just have to find a low calorie dressing that tastes good. And they say that fruit with high water content will keep you fuller longer, and thus aid in weight loss. Fruit like watermelon, canteloupe, any kind of melon. I know they are out of season in many places right now though... Hope I helped some. Oh, and I tried Slim Fast before. Didn't work for me.

I used Slim Fast years ago and had some initial success with it, but long term it didn't work for me either. I've recently been eating a lot of plain yogurt sweetened with Stevia and adding fruit and flax seed for 2 meals with a few sprigs of brocolli and cauliflower on the side, then a moderate meal of meat and a vegetable for dinner and I've been losing about 3 pounds a week, with no exercise. As soon as the weather breaks I plan to start walking again. Walking has always been an exercise that I enjoy - it doesn't really feel like exercising when you can get out and enjoy the views. It seems many people are happy with their results through Weight Watchers just as your mother was. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Funny, I was a large baby too, then I became very thin and couldn't gain weight no matter how much I tried. Apparently I have once again returned to my true oversized self and will probably struggle with weight the rest of my senior years, but I'm most interested in staying healthy and avoiding health problems. Thanks for your comments antiquelady. You gave me a chuckle.

When I was younger believe it or not we had to go to a special store because I was a size 0! Now that I am older I have gained weight off and on. I used to be like 97 lbs!! Wow I wish if only I could be now! I have gained lots of weight so my doctor put me on a water pill and also for high blood pressure. I can never find anything now that has that perfect fit! But between the pill I am taking and exercising I went from 161 to 140lbs. I found if you don't eat bread it is a really big help for loosing the weight. I know it is a hard thing to do! But it works! And if you can stay away from coca colas which is also hard to do but helps get the crystal light no calories!!1 And it is delicious and cheap!! I had to cut out chips which was hard too but I will treat myself on the weekend with a coke, chips , or popcorn even though I am not supposed to have salt ance in awhile won't kill me.

I don't think I was a size 0 when I was born - hee hee. Your tip about the bread, chips and coke is right on. I stay away from bread (even though I love, love, loe it) because I have a wheat and gluten allergy and it aggrivates my skin. We've read bad things about the high fructose corn syrup in soda pop so I make my own version by using carbonated water with a little Stevia added, and maybe some lime juice or some other fruit juice for a bit of flavor. It's even good with just sweetener and vanilla if you like a cream soda taste. We've replaced chips with air popped popcorn and I sprinkle grated parmesan cheese and a little sea salt. You might want to try sea salt as it doesn't affect your blood pressure like regular table salt does. Thanks for your input.

For me the best way I have lost weight was to cut the portions amount and thereby cutting calories. Every now and then not to be deprived of my favorite ice cream I will treat myself every now and then. I keep count of my calories and eat only whole grain noodles and grill instead of frying. The result was that for my age (70) I have been at the ideal weight for my height and age for the past 5 years.

I really like your suggestion about rewarding yourself with a treat every now and then. I think it's important so you don't feel deprived. Wonderful tips whiteheather - you are doing wonderful - not many people can make your claim so keep up the great work.

Oh you said the dreaded "E" word. My husband is always telling me "eat less and exercise" and I know that it's true. It's just that I can always find something better to do than heading to the basement to workout during the winter. Warmer weather is no problem as I walk the dogs and mow grass, work in my garden and yard and get a really good workout with all of them. Thanks for reaffirming what I know I should be doing.

What has worked the best for me is portion control. That means that I eat what I want, within reason, but not a lot of it. One cookie eaten slowly and enjoyed has replaced the 4-5 I used to eat at one sitting or picking at them all day. I've added more fruit and vegetables and found ways to season the vegetables so that I like them better--I'm not a big fan. One thing that has helped me a lot is unsalted rice cakes and sugarless jam and jellies. They are great, low carb snacks that taste good with a satisfying crunch. Unsalted because the less salt you eat, the healthier you are the easier it is to lose weight. And I drink a lot of water, plain from the tap. Good luck!

Yes, portion control is a big thing. I used to get a heaping bowl of ice cream or eat a steak almost as large as the one my huband ate. I've been really concentrating on trying to eat less and stop when I feel satisfied rather than continuing till I feel so full. I feel so much better eating that way. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas.

i did my weight lost by me self, i've still got more wegiht to lose or tone up my belly and thighs. all i did was change the way i eat, eating less at meal time. then eating better at the same time, i cut out a lot of sugar but get cravings for it every so often. i then also would take the dogs out each day walking with me, for up to an hour. i've also got some excerise equipment at home, that we got from the info mercial channels. like the ab king pro, ab circle and now my partner pinched the ab twister from his parents. i use them for 3 mins each, oh need to get motivated with it yet again. i'm currently stuck on on weight and need to tryt and get it moving again. best of luck with your weight loss. look forward to hearing about the results.

Sounds like you've been doing great weasel81. My huband does a lot of reading health magazines, and says that when you get stuck at a point and aren't losing, it can help to change the exercise you're doing, to trick the body a bit into giving up some more pounds. Thanks for your thoughts on this.

I have tried diet pills before. They work but they did not help maintain my ideal weight. What worked best for me is the "No eating after 6pm" diet. This diet really works and I can eat normally during the day, several times. You can eat what you want, you can still eat your favorite food. This will work as long as you don't eat after 6pm. If you feel hungry after 6pm, try drinking lots of water.

Yes, that's a key thing for me too, not eating after dinner. Once you break the habit of going to the kitchen for a snack, you really don't miss it either. Thanks for your comments.

I never had any such problems with my weight. But please do not try anything and everything new. If you really have a issue about your weight, i think it best to go and see your doctor. They normally draw blood and then they can tell you what is best and healthy for you. Keep me updated if you want. TATA.

I agree with you that these fad diets are crazy and cause more harm than they do good. The weight loss is never permanent from what I've read. I want to do it slowly and keep it off, and I will do it.

For me the best way to weight loss is doing exercises and cardio. Eat heavy in morning and at night only warm water . It effects a lot. I am following this for 2 yrs and reduced a large amount of my weight.

I do try to eat my big meal in the morning, then a little less at lunch, and the smallest for supper. I've never heard about the warm water. I'm interested in why warm water too.

I have reduced nearly 6 kg in 3 months by following this method. As per my trainer simply drink warm water 2 cups and sleep. Once in a month drink only liquid drinks like butter milk, warmwater, lemon juice for the whole day and avoid drinking milk on that day. I am following this. Try this it will workout well.

Weight Watchers work the best for the longest, I put the whole family on it and just watched my own portion size. We stayed on this for about a year. It was a lot of work when I did it, but that was many years ago. Guess what I still fight the weight battle. It all comes down to calories in and calories out.

Hi savypat. Yes, I've heard many recommendations about Weight Watchers. It does seem to be good at teaching people how to manage food and their weight long term. And you're right, it's all about calories in and calories out.

I am usually slim but lately I have gained a few extra pounds I would like to lose and so has my husband. The best thing that works for us is not dieting but just cutting down on the amount of food per portion. The important thing is to only eat when you are hungry and not because of boredom etc. We still allow ourselves our favourite treats in moderation. Increasing exercise does wonders too. We took to walking every evening after dinner with our dog that was also a little pudgy but so far she is the only one that has lost any weight! (LOL)! Time will tell...

Good advice paula. I think the word "diet" sets you up to fail in the future anyway. We need to alter our attitude towards food for our lifetime, not just a quick fix that most diets try to accomplish. Thanks for your thoughts on this.

I see a recurring theme here from people who are successful with their weight, watching food portions and getting exercise. There really is no quick fix is there. Thanks for your comments.

When I tried to lose weight what worked for me was eating better. I mean, getting balanced on eating vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, etc., and eating 3 times a day instead of skipping dinner because of arriving home late and tired. That and exercise, as I was too lazy in the past but now I feel more healthy and I got my ideal weight.

Yes, I agree you never want to skip meals. It just sets you up to be more hungry and to gorge the next time you eat. Glad you found a method that works for you.

I year ago (almost 11months ago) I was 92Kg. I caught Jaundice, I had to take bed rest for 33 long days. I was strictly prohibited to eat any meals, was allowed to take fruits, and Glucose only. I reduced down to 69Kgs. Then I decided to work hard to maintain the wight according to height, 6"1'. Currently I am at 83Kgs. I I am taking my workouts at gym regularly. Following the eat antiquates strictly. Avoid junk food as much as possible.
