I don't get it. (a side to the Winter Olympics)

I don't get the sport of curling. The past several winter Olympics I've often wondered how in the world did someone think it up, and who thinks it is fun? Now no one get mad at me here, I realize some sports are fun to some, while boring to others. I mean I don't kid myself that anyone but mainly Americans like American style football. During one Olympic broadcast 4 years ago, the broadcaster made mention of the popularity of curling in Canada. That broadcaster said next to hockey, it was the second most popular sport in Canada. However, I don't take their word for it. So Canadians, how popular is curling in your country? Any other Olympic sports you kind of think of as "different" or maybe "weird" (in a good way, maybe)?

I don't get curling either, but it is one of my husbands favorite sports to watch during the Olympics. He's trying to learn the rules and each year, he seems to know more and more about the competition. I don't understand all the snowboarding. I think the guys are crazy and that the sport is dangerous. but that's just me.

It certainly took a long time to get the Olympic committee to pick up snowboarding as a valid Olympic sport. I think they did that in an effort to draw younger people to the events, and also younger viewers to watch it on TV. I like the Winter Olympics, but the ratings for the summer Olympics are always WAY more than the winter games. But I think the summer games actually have more sports to compete in.

I've been waiting for someone to comment on the biathlon. I mean cross country skiing combined with rifle shooting? Who thought of that? I mean who thought to combine the two and make it an official sport...

The ratings issue is probably due to the fact that the American people understand summer sports more than winter, because a huge part of our country never sees any significant amount of snow! I am hoping, since I'm not working or going to school right now that I can watch some of the sports I've never paid attention to before. Maybe I'll learn something.

Curling is fairly popular here. And while a lot of people think it's boring, other people like the challenge. It's not like it's an official sport or anything. But many people do it. (By number of people, yes, it is probably the second most popular sport in Canada).

I'm not saying it's not a sport. I'm pointing out that in Canada, the national sport was lacrosse. Now we have two national sports: lacrosse and Hockey. (And it is possible that more people curl than play lacrosse)

I am confused as to why you think it is NOT an official Sport? It is played in many Countries in the World, like the "Briar Championship"..the McDonalds Championship.........and it is an OFFICIAL OLYMPIC SPORT...and has been for many, many years! The Curling World is HUGE, with HUGE sponsorships..and MONEY! Cheers!

The Scots, I believe, are responsible for curling. I think most sports are exciting,if I can be there in person. On television, most of them are boring.

Between 1816 and 1823, some 40,000 Scots immigrated to Ontario, Canada...and brought the Winter Sport--Curling..and the summer sport--Golf, and Golf got it's name from; "G"- Gentlemen "O" Only "L" Ladies "F" forbidden! Just a useless little bit of info. Cheers!

Many sports are fun to play but extremely boring to watch. For me number one boring sport for watching if golf. I think curling is second, but I believe curing is fun to play...

Hi, AmbiePam. The other day I was watching a show called The Thirsty Traveler and had an all new impression of curling when it was over. Like you, I've always found the olympic sport rather weird, but the people on this show where playing it outside on an iced over sidewalk, having a great time and not being all uptight about it. It reminded me of Americans hanging out in backyards playing horseshoes, or maybe a little more like shuffle board. The people I watched on this show were having a great time playing, though I'm unsure how much of the fun came from the Schnapps they were drinking between shots.

Ya know, seeing it played outside, informally, probably makes it more interesting. On TV at the Olympics, everyone is uptight, quiet, and the atmosphere is kind of like bowling. No one moves and everyone looks tense (for obvious reasons since a gold medal is riding on it).

So do they really have curling in the Olympics? Then if they have it in the Winter Olympics, how can justify dropping softball from the Summer Olympics when it is contested in many countries all over the world especially in the U.S. and Japan.

Theory is that they are dropping the softball from the summer games because the U.S. always wins. I've heard not just American analysts say that, but people from other countries as well. I don't know if that is the real reason. Olympic softball always does well attendance and viewing wise, so it doesn't make sense to me.

Curling to me looks a little like bowling on ice or maybe more like shufful board on ice

hey - don't you remember the curling in the movie HELP? Come on, I've read a bit about this game, its a kind of strategy game - played with a 40 lb (give or take a bit) "stone" on ice, with brooms... how much more fun can you have? Okay - I live in Texas - anything on ice has to be somewhat entertaining!

Oh...Ambie....careful with this discussion....Curling means as much to Canadians as Apple Pie is to Americans! We love our curling...and it truly is a very skilled sport...lots of stragedy...lots of patience...and I may be corrected here, but I think it was brought to our country by the Scots, 100's of years ago. As kids, we curled, as much as we played hockey on frozen lakes. And as for American style football...not that different from CFL...we have 3 downs, instead of 4. We have as many US players...as you have Canadian Hockey Players. All is good! Cheers!

So that broadcaster was correct in saying curling was second to Canadians only to hockey. I never hear anyone from Canada talking about it (like Americans do football, baseball...), so I thought the broadcast was exaggerating.

You're very right about how if one is not familiar with the sport it can be boring to a person. Because now that I think of it, I used to hate American football. I started to learn the game to have something to bond over with my dad. But I actually came to like the game for the game itself. Good point!

Nary a chance, dear girl...no exaggerations by the sportscaster! It's in our blood! And has been an Olympic Sport for a long time! Just like any other sport, if you don't understand it...it can be boring...but once understood, especially the stradegy..it is very exciting...it is fraught with precision! It is confirmed the sport came from Scotland...as well as Golf! I was afraid that you were going to get some "flack" from Canadians, as it is NOT a newer sport....and it seemed it was being trivialized! There are very few towns, without a curling rink, and without one...a local lake is used..or a pond is made for both Hockey and Curling! Baseball is a newer sport to the Olympics, and I am sure it will be back to the Summer Games, once the wrinkles are ironed out. Cheers!

I don't get the sport of curling either, but then again I was never a big winter sport participant myself. The only thing that I can maybe see in this sport is the art of balance....lol
