People these days are referring to alternative medications aside from the fact that alternative medicines are much safer to use (meaning no side effect and no over dosage) specially on Food Supplements. To you what is a food supplement? Why are people at ease taking it even if they read on the label "NO APPROVED THERAPEUTIC CLAIMS".

i believ food supplements are importand for us at this time especially the food tht we consume nowdays epecially the fast food lacks in its nutrients. doctors have advised that there wont be much poblem of ovrdosage of certain kinds of nutrients as it washes away from the body when there is an access.. for people like me who lacks in calsium as i dont take any 'milk' products this nutrients does actually become 'supplements' cheers

the worst are those parents who assume the task of doctors and 'force feed' their children with supplements instead of introducing their hildren with healthy meal .. i know a few young parents who does not want to force their child to eat those carrots and broccoli, they just feel so much of pain when the child cries or rebels but instead they make them take supplements .. i just hate it ..

Well parents should not be forcing their kids if they don't want to take the food. But the way why parents need to give them food supplement is on their own decision because they just wanted to compensate those nutrients being missed by their kids if the child does not like veggies. It is in the way how parents discipline their kids, or how kids obey their parents or to what kind of upbringing do they have for their kids.

Very true Sanjana, foods we eat are not enough that is why we go to try supplements. I am also in favor taking high absorption rate of calcium, but I only like one product from Tiens. Anyway the bottom line is , we should research which is safe for us if not ask our own doctors.

Like perscription medicines given by an Physician...I seek the advice of a "Naturopathic physician" before I take alternative medication! I truly don't believe it is wise to self medicate...not knowing the underlying cause of our symptoms, as it is possible even with "natural" alternatives to compromise our health! I truly hear what you are saying...and each and everyone of us, should seek qualified advice (not just printing on labels) in order to NOT jeopardize our health. Take care..and Cheers!

yes, people don't have prescriptions for food supplements, they can even purchase that over the counter. But we should be very careful like what you said. Consult the doctor also, if ever he wants you to go for such supplement, then why not. Happy Mylotting.

Thanks...to you...you just triggered a discussion from me...that truly further's your points...it is about "cinnamon" and how I nearly fell into a totally TOXIC trap, just by listening to a popular Dr. (On T.V.) that a lot of us watch! Because he is a Dr., I took it for gospel, what he was saying...BUT he should have added an addendum to his dispensation of advice....NOW, I am truly more cautious, and do a lot of research...AS I SUFFERED A LOT of pain, that I shouldn't have...if he would have simply said...THIS MUST BE TRUE CINNAMON...not the cheap "taste alike." I learned the hard way. Take care...and Cheers!

To me, anything that you take that is not food is a "food supplement." Food is not a food supplement. Therefore, if you eat Acai berries, it is still a food, but if you Acai pills, then that is a supplement. Basically pills, powders, and liquids that are not fruit/water/something you drink normally and/or could drink normally, are food supplements.

yes food is not a food supplement. And your example is one considered as an alternative. Thanks for your response.

As from my own experienced,i prefer to visit the doctor first, if i am not feeling well. During my visit to the doctor, i will ask the doctor if my health condition still need to take any food supplement. If the doctor suggest i need to take some, then i will ask which food supplement is suitable for me to consume. It's important never to take any food supplement which sold over the counter, as we never know which one is suitable to our body. Because taking the wrong food supplement will harm our body more than doing good. So, better take good precaution about this matter before it's too late.

I agree on what you said regarding to know what to take. Certain food supplements bought over the counter may not be even safe. Ask your doctor about it also and aside from that research it over the internet on what it claims if it is true or not. We are all given a wisdom to discern what is good for our body to take. Happy Mylotting.

Hi there my friend, well only your doctor can tell you if you are deficient or lacking something so he will be the one to prescribe you about some food supplement. You don't buy food supplements over the counter without knowing what it may cause your body. We should be very careful with regards to this. I happen to open the topic because there are lots of companies these days producing food supplements and the "CLAIMS" that they say to public, which is, we don't know if its true or not. But we should be aware as a person. Thanks for your response. Happy Mylotting.

Food supplements are stupid. They are useful only in convalescencing patients, ageing people and as a placebo .Its is rather prudent to use natural food or in healthy individuals.A food supplement claims to make kids grow double their normal growth.Every bone in our body has an ossification period.During which period the soft ends of these bone tend to grow. The ossification stops after a certain period. This determines the height of the individual, which in turn is governed by genetics. So just by adding a few food supplements one cannot increase the height to his will and pleasure. As a general medical practitioner i would recommend natural food instead of any stupid food supplements.I also insist that these food supplements be made prescription mandatory so the innocent may not be cheated.

I beg to disagree on what you said that Food supplements are stupid. You should not generalized them all because these are different on what purposes they may claim to have on the body. If you said you are a General Practitioner by profession, you should know that these food supplements are just for PREVENTION, and not to be given as a CURE. So even if companies claim, can cure these and that, of course that is Marketing Strategy because we already know for the fact that Food Supplements have no Therapeutic claims, BUT can AID for prevention of diseases specially if you know something about TCM. I respect your opinion although we should not condemn that ALL FOOD SUPPLEMENTS are ONE and the SAME. Doctors by profession are also not against Food supplements if that would work for the benefit of their patients.

The real meaning of "food supplement" to me is this, in today's modern life, our modern foods are already lacking the required vitamins and minerals of balanced diet. We can't blame the fast foods and restaurants. It's what we call commercial foods. Now, in order to compensate for the lack of nutrients in the diet, companies that are able to extract the needed substances are sprouting around the world and are selling to us laboratory-prepared tablets and capsules containing vitamins and minerals. They were created to supplement the nutrient that are lacking in our regular modern diet. Now, there are those scientists who are discovering new plants and their good health benefits, that are equivalent to modern medicines in effect. We can call them "herbal medicines". But the FDA strongly oppose these newly discovered products in favor of the old giant pharmaceutical companies. Now you can see products known for their cancer-fighting abilities not fully recognized by FDA as anti-cancer or anti-neoplastic because there are already established anti-neoplastic products registered by giant pharmaceutical companies. So the FDA labeled the new ones "Food Supplements and no approved therapeutic claims" to protect their old friends.

As the word implies, supplement is only to provide your body additional vitamins and minerals not usually found in the food that we eat. The say "No approved therapeutic claims" so that you won't take it as alternative medicine. Should your illness disappear because of supplement intake then it only meant that you just lack a certain nutrient. But don't play around with it. Be on the safe side and consult your doctor.

hi there, food supplement is considered as an alternative medicine. It is good for PREVENTION, not for cure...
