Just over 8 years ago, my dad told the visiting nurse that mum and I were going to take him on a snowdrop walk. We all knew that he was not going to leave his bed again so I asked my husband to go out and buy a potted snowdrop. It opened just in time. So, I planted snowdrops in my garden and in pots and each year they are at least in bud by 31st January. This year, a few days later, I came home from a difficult couple of days to find them fully open - it helped [em]happy[/em A sign of new life and hope.

Awwwwww... that's a wonderful story, Wizzy. Snowdrops are the first signs of Spring and new life. They're pure and white, and were obviously very significant to your Dad. I think that was a very loving thing you did for him, and hope you enjoy them and the thoughts of snowdrop walks with your Dad that they bring, for a very long time. Brightest Blessings, my friend.

Thank you. he loved springtime, birds, nature in general and was recycling big time long before it was promoted... as my mum's garage can still testify

He sounds a very special man, my friend. Talking about recycling a long time ago makes me think back to my grandfather and how he used to conserve water by having a water butt in the garden, and by using the water from the container under the mangle, to water his garden. I'm not sure about recycling as we know it these days, but people seem always to have been trying to preserve our planet. I love springtime, and being at one with nature too. My computer is right in front of the window, and I watch birds come to the windowsill to feed on the biscuit crumbs I've put out for them. The birds are very active at the moment, which is a sure sign that spring is coming. Talking about snowdrops, there's a large clump of them at the bottom of my neighbour's garden which I can see from where I'm sitting. I must go up the garden and check mine! The heathers are starting to bloom too... it makes you feel kind of light-hearted and expectant of new beginnings.

My dad used to go on long walks and collected aluminium cans which he took to a recycling centre to raise funds for Guide dogs for the Blind. Someone called the police once because they were concerned for his safety walking by the main road. yes, the new beginnings thing is just how I feel - seeing the bulbs start to sprout and everywhere gradually turning green... I love the colours of autumn too.

Hiya Wizzywig, That is really moving Wizzy I never communicate my thoughts on this kind of thing as it brings up too many memories as all that happened about 8 years ago in England too. But it is nice to see Snowdrops I was seeing Snowdrops all over the place wherever I went I don´t know if I am mistaken but they are almost exactly the same at first they looked like clover but when I got a close look they looked like Snowdrops too growing wild in the Hedges what do you think? I´m not an expert in Wild Flowers can only say that they looked really lovely and at this time of Year. Anyhow that is a really moving Story.

could've been though I wouldn't have said they look like clover as they have thing grass-like leaves... possibly wood anenomes... tho its probably a bit early for them. Dad used to take me places where he knew ther would be bluebells because i love those too.

Hiya Wizzy, Probably are what you say Wood anenomes. Not sure though so I will take my camera with me as they are all over the place and photo them so you can see what they are like. Whatever they are they look simply wonderful. I love Bluebells too and marigolds although those are garden flowers. Really I love most Flowers but bluebells and micklemass daisies favourites and pink roses also. You must love your Dad lots that´s really nice.

We didnt always see eye to eye when i was young but... I grew up and he mellowed. My mum says I'm a lot like him in my outlook, personality and mannerisms and most people think I look like my mum. I think I prefer it that way round since my dad had a big long beard

What a great thing to happen when you had a hard day. I am touched by the story of your dad, mom and last wishes and dreams. There are certain flowers that bring back particular memories. Thanks for sharing with us.

There was a daffodil when I first moved in that bloomed, but I killed it (not intentionally or anything). Maggiepie wants me to re-pot her plants, but I kill everything I've ever re-potted...

Then you'd best keep well clear of my Dad's snowdrops!!!! I used to have a big hollyhock in my garden which my mother-in-law loved but, one year, my husband did the garden as I was heavily pregnant and he dug it up. His mum went into the garden with me and asked what had happened. She was a very mild-mannered woman but I can still hear voice as she dashed back into the house and confronted my husband with "You stoooopid boy!"

We don't have snowdrops here but the daffodils blooming is usually our first sign of spring. I bet your dad was really happy to see the potted snowdrop!

Yes, he was. We put it on his bedroom window-sill. The daffs my dad planted in my garden are usually out earlier than most around here.

Very nice, they are lovely and such nice memories for you. I can fully understand why they made you so happy and reminded you of your father. I have a huge lilac bush in my back yard, before my old dog passed away she would lay under the lilac bush in the summer to keep cool. After we had to put her down it was so sad to see underneath the lilac bush, but when it blooms and is all flowery it is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen and it makes me happy. Of course the blooms don't last nearly long enough but for 2 or 3 weeks it is so brilliant and beautiful and I think of my dog and how much she loved that bush. I don't know if our new dog will like it as much as we just got her a little over a month ago and she does not spend much time outside because of the cold and snow and the mud. But I am pretty sure she will love to lay under the lilac bush too.

My dad used to stand by my gatepost leaning on his stick and wait for me to go out walking for him in the mornings. That space seemed so empty for a long time as I opened my curtains. Lilac bushes always remind me of my nan
