A frosting and filling combination that was unbelievably rich and to die for.

My friends and I went out to eat. They treated me to dinner. But they had to leave and I stayed. They kept bugging me to order dessert. Well there was no price on the dessert, just a case with a bunch of dessert in it. There was a white cake with a white and reddish filling, so I bought that and a carrot cake to take home to my husband. Was I ever surprised, first by the price, $5 a piece. WOW! That's a lot, I think. So I tried this white, white red cake. Oh, oh, oh, my was it good. White chocolate all over frosting and inbetween was the white frosting with a layer of the best tasting raspberry filling I've ever had in my life, like the best raspberry jam you've ever had in your life. The combination was amazing. Meanwhile, my husband wasn't impressed with his carrot cake, but I didn't think he'd eat the white one (not realizing what it was when I bought it). He also couldn't believe how much it was per piece of cake. Good thing the cake wasn't very sweet, not that I could really taste it anyway. So what is your "to die for" frosting and/or cake? How much does cake cost where you live? Have you ever had this kind of frosting or combination of tastes? Have you ever made it? It seems incredible.

sounds like it was well worth the $5 for the slice of cake. my mom used to make this awesome red velvet cake and it was so good. it takes a lot of eggs and a lot of work so she doesnt make it anymore but, the memories are sweet!

People say that, but the recipes I see online are just regular chocolate cake with red food coloring. So your Mom used more eggs than for a regular chocolate cake. Do you know what else she did to make it sooo good? The reason I ask is that I have a friend who loves red velvet cake, too. I wanted to make it for her, but just adding red food coloring seemed kind of strange to me.

It does sound good. I used to make a to die for carrot cake. I won't tell you my secret but my ex just loved it. My mother used to make the best fudge. Was a real pro at it. I mean, yum!! Once she made a special cake and used the fudge for frosting. It was a yellow cake and very substantial, not like fluffy and light but stiff and tasty. With that fudge frosting it was delicious.

The pineapple makes it moist and sweet without having to add very much sugar and the walnuts add such a wonderful addition to it. It is wonderful. Thanks and take care.

Sounds terrific! Fudge is good! I like carrot cake if it has pineapple in it. But I don't make it any more because one of my brothers can't even look at pineapple without getting a cole (cold?) sore. (IN English up here, people drop the ends of words when they speak like the French do because we're French decent, if I haven't written a word before, I have to guess the dang last sound). I like it even better with walnuts or pecans.

Interesting about the Frend thing.Almost like a secret language or something. This talk of carrot cake makes me want to bake one and I would make it with walnuts and pineapple. Sounds delicious!

The time before when I went somewhere else, cake was $3. But the next time we went to a relatively cheap place, cake was $4. So I guess a high end place like they took me to, it's not unusual for it to be $5. Some people don't like frosting or only like it in limited amounts or only certain ones. I don't like frosting on everything. Pumpkin cake and gingerbread (I don't consider that bread, it's cake to me) and Johnny Cake (which is a sweet corn bread French people have, up here, that is 1/2 flour and 1/2 cornmeal or cornflour), I don't want frosting on any of those. My husband only likes peanut butter frosting and only sparingly, just enough to cover the cake. My favorite thing to do because I hate making/spreading frosting plus most frostings tend to be too sweet and not have taste (so unless I make them all the time and Dr. them to my taste, plus some places put a TON of frosting on), I put pie filling on to and in some cakes between the layers, too. Some people like that. Cherry pie filling goes great with chocolate and so does raspberry. Apple pie filling goes great with spice cake. Blueberry pie filling is good on white or yellow cake. My husband loves peanut butter frosting on any kind of cake. I think the biggest problem tends to be too much frosting and too sweet for many people. So I can understand. I've had the Crisco frostings at stores and those can taste like 100% sugar and fat. My husband likes butter in his peanut butter frosting and I grew up with my Mom making cream cheese frosting with just a little sugar because my family had diabetes. So when I ate other people's frostings, for a long time, I didn't like them. So, in other words, I can see where you're coming from. There are a lot of bad frostings out there, there are a lot of people who just don't like frosting and all kinds of situations inbetween. Thanks and take care. Thanks for dropping by.

That should be pie filling on top.

Seems like the taste really fits the price. I wouldn't mind paying for something like that just to have a nice filling taste of a cake. I can see those prices in some cafe outlets, and the cakes are really nice and tasty. Too addictive, especially those with chocolate flavors in it. Too yummy!!

Yes, the ingredients and work in it were probably worth it. I'll have to try to make it myself some time. One piece just wasn't enough.

Hi, Edge! What a not-so-pleasant surprise. I'm glad, at least, it was good! If I get weak, I love cheesecake with dark chocolate icing, topped with fresh strawberries. In another 10-12 pounds, I might just treat myself, but only if I make it myself. It's about $8 at a restaurant, and that's more than it costs to make!

They make a killing on dessert where you are, too, huh? Usually the cheesecake is the most expensive item on the desert menu, if they have it, up here, too.

Sounds rich and yummy! This discussion is timely because I just bought a whole cake and brought it home. It's called Chocolate Heaven and I'll be posting pictures on my blog one of these days :) The whole cake cost me a little over ten dollars. I would consider a cake expensive if a slice costs about 2.5 to 3 dollars. Chocolate cake with fudge is still my favorite but I haven't found the perfect recipe that I could bake yet. Looking forward to it though :)

Yeah, that's the problem with the no recipe rules. You can look things up on the internet, but if someone tells you about a good recipe, that's different. One million choc. fudge frosting recipes could be on the net, but which ones are really fudgy? The prices up here go crazy when the price of petroleum goes up. We get everything like that from far away.

Oh you are so right. Once I asked my aunt how she made the yummy frosting she did but when I tried it, it didn't turn out the same! I guess we have to try and adapt some of the recipes until we find THE one. :)

Exactly, you sound like a real cook to me (also watch those old cooks, it's what they don't write down that makes the difference).

I imagine at some places locally cake is that expensive. I am just not much of a cake person. I prefer pie. Fruit pies or chocolate silk pies or peanut butter pies. I have a hard time when the desserts are that expensive. I can make pretty good ones at home, but we are not big sweet eaters. That is, until we get to fudge and stuff like that. Even so, I eat more of it than anyone else. This discussion makes me want to go make something yummy.

I make lots of deserts, too. I do a really good job of most deserts. I can't seem to make donuts or cream pies, but everything else, I can usually make as well or better than when I eat it when we go out. I have to try to make the desert I got that night. 10 bucks for 2 deserts, unbelievable.
