Where can I sell my old books?

March 21, 2010 2:52am CST
I'm an avid reader and have amassed quite a lot of old books. I'd like to sell them online. I know Amazon will sell your old books for you but does anyone know of any other sites or is Amazon the best one? What tips do people have for selling books? Has anyone ever made any money by buying second hand books e.g. at car boot sales, and then selling them online? (I feel a new business coming on!)

I buy and sell at greenmetropolis.com. Based in the UK, they buy at £3 and sell at £3.75. For each book sold they also donate 5p to the Woodland Trust, so you can feel your transactions are also helping to save the planet.

We are avid readers too, but are now running short of space, so we had no choice but to sell some books. I tried a couple of sites, but they were very complicated and had to give up on them. But then I discovered Amazon and now I just sell with them and I am very happy! Just watch out where your book will be going to and also how heavy it is. I live in Austria, but the majority of my clients come from Germany, so I must pay a slightly higher postage than the €3 Amazon gives me. Paperbacks are usually a better deal, although hardbacks are good too in the case of newer books. They pay regularly and everything always runs smoothly! It is also important to state the condition of the book, as I had somebody complain once as I no longer had the book cover!

I have sold quite a few books on ebay...my tips are to take a good photo of the book, write a really good description of the book including the condition - I always write a little of the blurb from the back cover in the description & put the copyright year on it too. There are a few sites where you can list them like amazon, ebay, ecrater, blujay, oztion I guess it depends on which country you live as to where you can list too...before listing on a site, I would also research a few different sites to see which is going to be the cheapest including listing price & the percntage of what they charge you when the item is sold. Good luck in what you do.

Hi, I only can think of Amazon or Ebay or unless you have Yahoo! Auctions in your country. But I think you have to pay a fee for any of the mentioned. One way that you can overcome is to you create a website (there's plenty of free websites with editor as well for you to use) and create a few auctions in Ebay for a few books which you think might be a best seller. Within the auction, you publish your website link to create traffic for your other books. Minimize cost and time for all books to be place on the auction. I think it's good if you can have your story context, book's condition, S&H all provided. Alternatively, you may want to look at other sellers' presentation of their book information for more ideas. Hope it helps.

I've sold a lot of stuff (records, speakers, amplifier, bike, phonograph, cultured stone, etc.), but not books, on Craigslist. I prefer it over eBay because you don't have fees. Craigslist is free; all you have to do is set up an account. I checked and there's a Craigslist UK - London. So maybe that's an avenue you could use. I've tried using FB to sell my business services, but so far that hasn't panned out.

I usually just go to my local used book store and you can usually sell them there or at least trade them in for credit and get some new books if you would like. If not Amazon or ebay would probably be your best bet.

Yes, its possible (especially on our country). You can sell books (2nd hand books) on some places here in the Philippines (Like Recto and Quiapo). The reason why this books are a hit on the market is because the big price difference from a new one. Filipino's are being practical on using there money so they prefer buying this kind of stuffs. :)

I've sold on amazon, ebay and craigslist. I feel that listing them on craiglist was the best-I had local people pick it up and I got the asking price I'd wanted. (mine were WWII books and the twilight series)

have you tried selling your books on craigslist? i know they have a section specifically for books, you may want to check that out. I like craigslist because you can find all kinds of things there, and you won't need to pay shipping charges as you can just have potential buyers come and pick up the items. I sell my old books at garage sales, but you can't really make too much money at garage sales as most people are just looking for a really good deal. Ebay is another place you can try, although with shipping costs i'm not sure if you'll really make money selling on ebay unless it's a very popular book that's worth a lot. You can also trade your books at www.paperbackswap.com this way you can trade for books you haven't yet read, you won't be making any money, but you will save money by not having to buy new books. hope these ideas are of some help to you!

Well, in my hometown and in my birth place, there are places to sell used books, and people buy them. Now, where I live I am not allowed to have "Yard Sales" or "Garage Sales", so I disguise my sales as "Driveway Sales" and "Mini Sales". You can sell on eBay, Amazon.com, Craig's List, Facebook (tell your friends that you have books for sale), and there are other sites that you can use to sell your books.

amazon and ebay are the places i sell my books. they are the easiest and quickest. depending on the books you can get a lot of money for some styles of textbooks.

You can list books onto eBay, but if they are heavy books the postage can be quite expensive.

Books don't go for much anymore. Like they say about cars ya know. They start depriciating in value as soon as you drive them off the lot. Same with books. Do you have those second hand book stores there that let you trade? Ebay has alot of books on it. Amazon you can sell on too. I used to know of a site where you could trade your books like at the second hand book stores but I can't recall the name of it. About the only way you can sell books anymore is if they are first editions or very saught after ones.

I have sold a few old books through ebay. Only some of our own . The hard backed books are not worth it unless they are rare as the weight makes the price too expensive but the paper back books sell okay. Amazon has a fixed postage price I think so you need to factor that in.

Well you can try having a garage sale or try selling some of your books to your friends through networking sites like mylot, or even facebook and multiply. Ebay is also a good choice for selling stuff and if you also want to buy stuff. There are a lot of options out there! Hope i helped! :)
