Today I gather! Have you gathered anything wild or tame yet?

Yesterday, I scoped out the situation. Chives are up, winter garlic is partway grown, dandelion greens are nice and small, and some of the mint leaves are nice looking out there. Since I didn't do maple syrup (no time and someone gave me a gallon), this will be my first gathering of spring 2010. I might find more things once I remove the leaves from my garden and other areas around here. So have you gathered anything yet? Is it almost time to pick something where you are?

Mmm. Chives. I used to have a garden and herbs as well. Strawberries and cantaloupe. It was so good. I live in an apartment and don't grow anything any more. I know several fruit stands around and visit them constantly.

I grew chives in my window box one winter. If you have room for a window box, you could grow them. I love strawberries and cantaloupe. It's great that you frequent fruit stands. That's wonderful for local Farmers. I used to work at a Farmers' Market, can you tell?

Celts are island people by nature who have either cultivated the land or been to the sea to live. Native Americans love the land and nature. I found living in a city very difficult. I'm not Native American, buy my ancestors were mostly peasant farmers (except for a mercenary, a seaman, some miltary and a few religious people thrown in for variety. When I was working my butt off at college, I didn't mind. But if I had any time off, I wanted to be back with the land. Luckily, I'm Learning Disabled, so I had to work very hard at college and had very little time to notice. I'm really happy when I do things outdoors with the land.

I can tell! I hope I have the energy this year to plant some things. My depression gets in the way of things sometimes. No energy.

I've been gathering dandelion leaves to eat fresh in salads and nibbling on chives every time I go outside. I'm always amazed at how fast they grow. Mint is up, but not very big yet, so I've left it alone. I thought I saw wild salsify, but haven't gone back to check yet. It's been windy here, so I haven't uncovered anything except the chives, so, like you, I might discover other things once I start cleaning things up.

We used to have horse radish where I used to live. Now that's a challenging thing to process. They showed a horse radish processing plant. People used those air exchange gas masks. I would think so. Doing that all the time would burn out the lining in your nose and eyes.

Underneath the leaves, I found oregano and marjorum up, too.

Yes...yes!! Believe it or not..we weighed them, over 5 pounds of Nettles, now all made into soup, or frozen in packages (with the Food Saver)...AND lots, and lots of Dandelions, including roots for later grinding! Find they grind easier when frozen, too. I am still harvesting last year's Leek and Kale crops..so YES harvesting is good right now. Take care & Cheers!

No I haven't, though I have been watching my raspberry bushes for leaves, because if I remember correctly, I should gather them before the blooms come or maybe it is before the fruit..I can't remember, but I have the info in my inbox and will check it out. But regardless, it isn't ready yet. We also don't have dandelions yet and I didn't bother looking at my mint yet, since I still have some dried from last year..

I don't see any leaves on my raspberry bushes either. I do the picking and drying of leaves before the flowers. But I don't take all the leaves, just 1 out of 3 in large raspberry stands and 1/7 in small berry stands.

Really? This being my first year, I was just going to guess how much to take and probably would have taken not very much.. But thanks to your info, I know how many to pick. I have three different kinds of berry plants. wild black raspberry, wild blackberry and a hybrid red raspberry. Do you think it would be ok to mix them all, or to get the best flavor, keep them separate?

Actually writer, you probably know more than I do, since this is the year year for berry leaves for me. And now that I read about your blackberry leaves rotting, I will not mix them, just in case. I do have a question though. The only things I have dried before had stems, like mint and bee balm, but the berry leaves will not. When I dry the mint, I tie together the stems and hang them upside down in a cool dark place. What is the best way to dry berry leaves?

Nothing is ready to be harvest here - well, other than the daffodils. :) But spring is coming early this year, and I am very happy for that.

Daffodils are beautiful. Not edible that I know of, but make great arrangements. Not sure where you are in the USA. Alaska? The Canadian above you here is above most of the USA and harvesting.
