i like to read. i just read my first ebook (dan brown's 'the lost symbol') using my laptop and sometimes a pc (i don't have any of those smaller handheld gadgets). i must say that i still prefer reading the old-fashioned way - like curling up with the book then falling asleep. it's hard to curl up with a laptop; it gets quite warm on my lap. and when i fall asleep, the battery runs out. until i find a more comfortable way to enjoy ebooks (any suggestions?) i think i'll stick to paperbacks. which do you prefer - real books or ebooks?

I prefer real books. I never finished a e-book and I have a huge collections once given by a friend. it´s not the same sitting infront a screen reading, then holding a book, turning each page, and every now and then fall asleep on the book. I wouldn`t want to fall asleep on my keyboard! as much as I like my PC, for reading I will always prefer the real thing, a real book that I can take with me everywhere, I can mark/highlight things in them, maybe make short sketches or notes with a pencil and and..... I cannot do this with my PC- I am sure "real" books will never dissapear from our life, no matter how far the computer technology goes

Hello, Meritselket. That's what I want to say. I prefer real books too. I also like to make marks and sketches on a real book; sometimes, I also like to hold a book in bed, turning pages, and then fall asleep. If I always sit in front of the notebook, staring at the screen, my eyes will be tired so much and I will feel a headache. To keep a direct touch with real books but not e-books is my choice forever. Have a nice day!

i totally agree. there's no substitute for the feel of turning the page and being able to make pencil notes.

I prefer reading real books. I can't focus on a computer screen for too long before my eyes start hurting. I also like having an actual physical copy of the book. I'm too paranoid about losing files to invest in ebooks.

i have actually accidentally deleted come of my files; it would definitely be horrible if i deleted an ebook!

I have only read one e-book. It was an English book and it hasn't been translated to Danish, so I wasn't able to buy the Danish version in shop. If I wanted to read the book I had read it as an e-book. I enjoyed the story, but it was hard for me to get used to reading that way, and I usually prefer oldfahsioned books. I like to read in my bed, outside, on the bus etc and that is one of the reasons why it is much more convenient for me to read the oldfashioned way. When I read a real book I can read anywhere, and I don't have the same kind of freedom if I have to use my laptop in order to read.

yes i find reading from a laptop bothersome - maybe if we had one of those handheld gadgets we might enjoy reading ebooks more.

well, i know what you mean.. I love the smell of every page... but when i'm done reading them for several times, I feel kind of sad that i would have to stack them back in the shelf or sell them 50% off.... so with that, i sometimes prefer to have ebooks.. I read them with my phone... I could keep them all in my flash disc ^_^

yes that's one advantage of ebooks - they don't take up shelf space. but it's still satisfying to see your favorite books lined up on the shelf just waiting to be read again :)

I have an ebook reading thing on my mobile phone and I find it is quite straining on the eyes even though it can have quite big lettering . I like that you can put a paper back in your pocket and you dont need there to be electricity or anything to read it, you can have it in bed with you or even in the bath if you are careful. An ebook reader seems like a gadget to fix a problem nobody actually has in the first place.

hmmm i've never tried to read while in the bath but seems like a very good way to relax while soaking.

yes, there is something comforting and relaxing about holding a book in your hand.

Oh definitely a real book! In the winter it is nice to curl up in bed with a book and in the summer sit in the garden with a book in the sunshine! In fact if it is warm and sunny tomorrow I plan to sit in the sun after doing some gardening and then read my new book I bought today. x

I'd rather read physical books but since I can't always make it to the library e-books are the next best thing. If I have the money I'll purchase a real books from online to be sent to my home but I don't know about you guys but books these days are pretty fricken expensive so I don't do it often.

so true; books are pretty expensive. i usually buy paperbacks from used books stores. i may not get the current best sellers but searching for good titles is part of the fun.

I'd rather read a real book since it's tangible... But don't get me wrong about ebooks. Ebooks are environmentally great, but the two still has strain to the eyes. The advantage of ebooks would be it's not much of a clutter in your home and you can easily find where you last left off. But an ordinary book, you can use it and though it can sometimes be a clutter, you can possibly give them away and make a little bit of money from your used books. There are ups and downs to the tangible item and and the ebook. But I would have to say the actual book, because it's cheaper to replace if it falls in your pool. -.-

yes the advantage of ebook references and encyclopedias is that they don't occupy shelf space. besides these books are always being updated because of the amount of new knowledge that's becoming available.

Personally I would much prefer to have the actual book in my hand. Reading a book is an experience - not just reading it, but the feel of the book in your hand. Reading an ebook would feel too cold for me x

yes, holding the book and turning the page feels really nice; so much better than scrolling down the screen.

Hello! Well in my opinion it's best to read books, because of some reasons which I took in consideration : The power bill [Reading a book doesn't cost anything, but keeping a laptop jacked for hour does squeezes a few pennies.] The bulky laptop[It's hard to stay in one position to read on the laptop.Still You can read a book anywhere, anytime, anyhow] My sensible eyes[Standing too much at the computer affects my eyes a lot ,so the lees the better.Reading a whole book on a screen will probably destroy my eyes for good.] The Easy handling of a book[Books are generally small and take less effort to handle, they also occupy small spaces in your baggage.] Tradition [Where's the joy of turning pages, feeling the old smell of books.] Availability [You can read a book anywhere, even when the power is out and anything, thing impossible for a laptop whose battery usually lasts for 3-4 hours.] Reading a book is quiet ,relaxing, somehow natural, traditional. Cheers!

yes i agree with all your reasons for preferring real books over ebooks. ebooks do come in handy tho as reference materials. ebook encyclopedias dont occupy space so you can stock your shelves with your favorite paperbacks (and hardbound books).

if i have the same book with a book and an ebook, i would prefer the real book that doesn't need any battery, power, scrolling, that i can take where ever i go, that doesn't break down even after making it fall from a hundredth floor building. But in when there is no cash to buy books and ebook is easily available, i would prefer ebook because of the money it save. But at the same rate, i will always go for the old fashioned books.

I would much rather read real books. For me, its an aesthetics thing. When I read an ebook, I don't feel like I have actually read a book. When I hold a paperback in my hands and actually turn the pages and see my progress, it's a lot more pleasing. Also, I like reading real books because staring at a screen for prolonged periods of time (I read for several hours at a time), hurts my eyes =D

Hello! I prefer reading e-books because then I don't have to spend much money on buying books that I will read just one or two times in my life or going to library and forgetting to take it back so at the end I would have to pay penalty...so reading online is cheaper and I prefer it more. I don't have to spend lots of time finding books that I would be interested in. Happy mylotting!

I prefer real books. I like turning the pages and watching my bookmark go through them. I like the smell of books. I like having physical copies of books instead of some digital file. I like having my bookcase overflow with books! And I have two major complaints with ebooks, firstly they make book piracy easier and secondly books should not be able to crash. If you really want to go with ebooks, then you might try picking up an e-reader like the Kindle or the Nook. It would be easier to carry around.

Before, my friends gave me books to read.. some are interesting some are not so... But when E-books came... OMG! My friends gave me more and more e-books to read. I think E-books are a lot wider now than the regular books. =( Before: Bookshelves Now: Hard Disk LOL! =P

I like to read books. For some reason my eyes get tired quite easily when Im reading something on the internet. In my opinion, books are just more practical to use, but that varies from person to person.
