I just saw this on Yahoo! News, and I can't believe it. A school spied students through the webcams on the school-issued laptops. An invasion of privacy!
Here's the link so you can find out more about it: http://tinyurl.com/schoolspywebcam
(Sorry, I used tinyurl because I can't copy paste links, and the link to the news was so long. Lol)
Anyway, how do you feel about this issue? What if your school or your kids' school did this to them? Do you think the parents did the right thing by suing the school?
If this were done to me, I'd prolly not have a face to show, but I'll be so mad! It's a TOTAL invasion of privacy, and they even found entertainment in it. :|

I honestly don't see the point at all. I mean, why put up an effort to check on the kids?
The video said that they were just trying to trace the whereabouts of the laptop as a precaution, but the point that the camera has recorded photos of the kids at 15mins interval, that's absurd.
I can't put my finger on the purpose of such. The family said that if the school was so concerned of the student not being able to pay for the insurance, they could have just taken the laptop back anytime during the school time and they exactly know the addresses should they really want to take it.
It's shocking that a technology like that happens. Now I'm wondering if this webcam of mine could be turned on without my knowledge.

No matter what angle we try to look at this case, the school is really wrong. You're right, the school had many ways to trace the laptop and get it back, so they really didn't need to take pictures every 15 mins!
My webcam lights up if it gets turned on, so I feel pretty secure. But I really don't know if there's a software or technology that could stop the indicator from lighting up if it's on. :/

That's awful. I would've definitely sued the school, too. That's completely wrong. What students do in their free time is between them and their parents. The school has no authority to butt into their lives once they're off school property, especially not in their home life! And especially not without permission or acknowledgment of the parties involved.
I think it's just sick to think that a school would do such a thing and then get entertainment out of it. Who knows what they might've seen on those computers? If I had been one of those students it would've completely creeped me out because I know that I tend to leave my computer on in the bedroom when I'm changing and stuff because my webcam is never on and there's never anyone watching...but then to find out that someone might have been watching that? It's sick. Plus, I wouldn't feel safe in my own house after that anymore. It could very possibly mess with them psychologically.

Exactly, the school doesn't have any right or authority over those matters. Their main concern should be education, and maybe some manners and attitude inside the school, but that should end there. They went way beyond their limits. :/ It's really sick and you're right that it may inculcate a bad psychological effect on the kids whose privacies have been invaded.

OMG, Jeeyah! I would be more than livid! That is a blatant invasion of the privacy of the students and their families! It's really creepy. If it's that easy to do then it kind of makes you wonder who else is doing this same thing? I have not yet watched the whole video because my daughter is sleeping and just got after me for the noise. What was the school's response...motive? How did the students and parents discover this?

jeeyah those parents should sue the socks off that school the very'
idea of watching those children thorugh webcams, a mans home is supposed
to he his castle and nobody has the right to spy on the students like'that, that is just outrageous to me.They have every right in the World to sue that school and I can bet they will win too. I a m appalled that any school would do that to their students at all.

Schools are meant to educate children, not to make their personal lives their business. No one has the right to spy on anyone especially through webcams. :| I think all the parents should join forces and sue the school. They can never pay back or give back the privacy and dignity they'd taken away from the students who were spied on. :|

awh my gosh that is definitely a way too private!!
they should not spy on the students at their homes unless if the students are living in hostel..but still, the school admin doesn't have the right to spy on the students..they should give the students some privacy unless if they are spying on particular students who need to be put under the eye perhaps!

Ohh that would be a very shocking news for me. As a parent I would not allow such thing to invade the privacy of my kids and our family.
Good thing our country is not in that point doing it. But still school rules is only within the school premises. Once they get out from that school as a parent I ruled my kids.

That's too much, that's over.. No one can take over the responsibility of parents. They should know that.
They supposed to know where to start their responsibility and where to end it.

I think it's awful invasion of privacy and they were right about suing the school.
Besides, what excuse did they use for what they did? What kids do at home is none of their business!

Well, they took the pictures, didn't they? That was inappropriately enough, I think.

Their only comeback was that they didn't use the pictures inappropriately. That's not really a nice comeback, because come on, why did they need to take pictures in the first place, right? No matter where you look at it, the school is wrong. And you're right, it's definitely none of their business.

Wow that is horrible. What was their reason for doing this. The thought of this is so disgusting it makes me want to throw up. I am so angry after hearing this. What kind of person thinks its ok to spy on their students home lives. Seeing the students naked without their knowledge is horrible. I'm completely disgusted this is just so wrong. There is no logical reason that this should have ever happened.

The only thing I can say is that your kids are really lucky to have you. And as for the school, not so lucky for them. Lol. Anyway, on a serious note, it's really not part of their job to butt in the kids' personal lives. That's why there are parents who guide them in their homes.

LOL I watched the video, it is really sad, the school authority has no right do hamper others privacy, they should be dragged to the court of law..
Thanks for this post. God bless you.

I am really shocked after read the news. I do believe that every person have there privacy and which is very important for there life.I will feel really bad if anybody spied me or my kids. I do believe student needs there privacy which make them broad mind.We do learn things from school but we also learn things from our life. But if anybody spy us always then we can't express our mind or our life. So i am against of this matter.
Have a good time!

That is way out of line. Schools shouldn't do that even if to protect the material they provide students. If they're so worried about where the laptop would go, then they should've made sure that the entire insurance was paid off first instead of taking care of things their way without warning the users. It's like when you call customer service and the callers are informed that their calls may be monitored or recorded. But this is way out of line! If that were done to me, I would totally sue! That's a direct invasion of privacy and that shouldn't be allowed, especially since it's not related at all to federal investigations.

That's true! They should have at least warned the students about that software, but they didn't. And what's more is that they abused it. What the kids were doing outside school wasn't really the concern of the admin, it was the parents' concern. So they didn't really have any valid reason to do that kind of thing.
