Cashew nuts in train

India
April 29, 2010 3:41am CST
While coming here on first of March with my wife and son’s family, we purchased packets of Cashew nuts from a vendor in the train compartment. The cost was almost forty percent less than market price, I examined the packet, the nuts were not broken, looked fresh and there was name of the packer, with name of website, email id and cell phone number, in case one has any complaint or suggestion. Today my wife cooked ‘kheer’ (rice boiled in thick milk, sweetened), we normally add cashew nuts too. When she opened the packet, OMG it was full of crawling insects. Means we were badly cheated, that too in an air-conditioned reserved coach. The vender had kept intact nuts on the top and insect eaten inside. I tried to contact on the cell number, email address and the website, they were fake, non-existent. Have you ever been cheated by a vendor on the street, in train, bus, railway platform etc. or by some shop in mall or in online purchase? Share your views, happy posting, cheers Prof

I only buy from official stewards on trains or the bar coach. It is never wise to buy from other on trains or platforms.

That's a very bad way to sell food! But I guess each one has their own "marketing" strategies. In my case, it would be strawberries. I used to buy strawberries whenever I traveled up north that was already packed. One of the reasons for this is because I am no longer in the mood to look around and choose from among the vendors and I may have bought too much gifts already. The strawberries on top always look fresh and unspoilt. But when I get home, the ones on the bottom are usually crushed to a pulp and can no longer be eaten. On my recent trip, I bought strawberries that I personally handpicked and these were able to last in the fridge for a week.

That was too bad . .. There are many people who do bad things just to earn and they don't realize the they are costing the buyer's health so much. . I have bought rotten fruits thrice already in one of the biggest malls in our place . . Too bad that the management of this mall don't bother to check what's being sold in their supermarket.

Sometimes many people do bad things to other people just to earn. They cheating other people just to earn big. That's why we need to be careful to buy food in the streets or in the provinces because we never know if the product is clean or safe to eat.

dear professor, that is very bad. this is one reason why economy in a certain place suffers, because they do not trust the vendors hence they dont buy. am sure next time you will double check anything that you buy on the train so as not to be cheated again. happy posting, ann

That's disgusting Prof. Is there anyway you could find the vendor through the railways, or was he just one who gats on at one station, and off at the next. He needs to be stopped.

The kind of fraudulent business is quite rampant in many walks of life. Nothing can be done, except trying to be cautious always against spurious goods and services.

Hello Sir, I hope you learnt a lesson from this. We had similar experience but not with food times. Once we purchased the CD of movies, (I warned my hubby before purchasing, if it won’t work then to whom we complaint, but he didn’t listen me and wanted to try it). The result was obvious and only two of them are complete and other movies were not complete. (My husband learnt a lesson too, lol). Some other times we purchased T-shirts (just attracted with the beauty but after a wash it become small in size. Now we don’t purchase anything in train except some recipe books. Earlier vendors were not permitted in AC compartment now they are moving freely in AC coach.

Hi Sree Yes i learnt a lesson no doubt. The vendors enter because of the TTE's, they give them money, tea etc, what they sell.. Thanks for response. God bless you. Cheers. Prof

hi professor we here where I am staying at Gold Crest have often shopped at the 99 cent store but I will not buy anyfood stuffs anymore from them, these items all are stuff legitimate stores have tossed out as outdated and these sleaze bags buy that stuff and sell it for 99 cents, well I got home with donuts that were rancid, the oil in them had turned, they were unfit to eat and the expiration date was way past. no never again, its not saving anything to buy food you have to throw out.even some of the canned stuff was not safe, the cans were bulged. I do not know how they stay in business when they do stuff like that.

Oh my, well what can I say..Incredible India. They really are tricky there so we have to be so careful when buying food or snacks. It also happens in our country but I haven't encountered that in buses, since most nuts they sell here are really cooked hot. I also buy cashew nuts but I haven't experience buying it on trains. I only buy them on snack stalls or reputable stores when we go to Goa. I have also tasted kheer, most of the time it was cooked by my sister in law. It is indeed a delight. At least you gave me an idea not to trust on buying such on trains, heheh!

Yes, it happens to most of the persons who purchase things on train or in the station. I always practice not to buy anything outside. I always carry my own snacks. Whenever I travel, I used to shop snacks, dry fruits, etc and never buy from any places. It is a common practice they always cheat and people sometimes trust them and buy it. I recommend and suggest you all guys buy things from nice places. It's useless to spend your precious money on them.

I guess the lesson learned here is to never buy stuff from people on the street or a street car. Because they aren't fully licensed and they may look suspicious. I have been cheated by a vendor before. I complained but it really didn't get me anywhere. I just don't shop with them anymore and try to warn other people about the vendor so they don't get cheated too.

I did not experience anything like this. Perhaps we should be proactive to register such cases with the authority. I amnot aware but there has to be some legel aspects to handle this.

That is too bad. It is not adivisble to buy products from street vendors. I got two skirts from street vendors from one of the biggest cities in my country. I was so happy to get those nice skirts, but after two wash the skirts lost a lot of color and the whole money was waste. You can't trust the company name and address given in those packets. I never buy food from online places. They are expensive and we are not sure about the quality even the we know that the website is genuine. I make it a point to buy products without expiry dates from onine shopping malls. Sometimes online shopping plaes give products in half the price, but there will be one month for the expiry of that product. I usually buy books and gift items online.

I often feel cheated by the traders, but I have never disputed. Sometimes I'm feel sorry for the traders who cheat to her buyer. They did not know that by cheating, on eventually just be disadvantaged themself because there are no buyers willing to buy merchandise them
