Should abortion be totally illegal?

This idea for this discussion came to me after watching that news about Sarah Palin and her down syndrome child. That could of easily ended up with her essentially killing that child before he was born but I think the only reason she didn't abort is because she wants to maintain her good public image... Now according to some statistics I found on google: 42million abortions occur every year. That's essentially 42 million murders every year by mothers & doctors. I believe these statistics are this high because of the testing of children while they're still in the womb. This is because , if a defect is found , people abort, which is basically saying that the child is worthless; not worthy for life. Human life is precious. So what do you think , MYLOTTERS? Should abortion be made illegal? I wait impatiently for your responses...

Hi CynicalStephen, No, I don't think it should be made illegal at all. I remember when it was illegal. Abortions still occured. There is no way to know just how many but they did happen. There were illegal, underground doctors that performed these abortions and often in unhealthy, unclean conditions and without properly sterilizing their tools. Some young girls tried aborting their own babies and ended up seriously hurting themselves in the process. Making abortion illegal would return us to those times. I think rather than make it illegal, more should be done to educate both young men and women on the many forms of birth control as well as their other options should pregnancy occur. More counceling before opting for abortion to be sure that a woman is sure that abortion is the right answer for her. Her decision is a permanent one.

Yes they did and yes it was disgusting. I was a kid back then but I think a lot of it was the judgements passed about women getting pregnant prior to marriage. It was considered quite a disgrace. I, personally, can't imagine having an abortion. None of my girls were conceived in the best of times but I chose just to deal with my situation and I have no regrets in that. In fact, I have talked to many young women who find themselves pregnant and scared. I hope my story will make them stop and think about the choice they are about to make. If they are actually willing to listen then there is a chance that they might think twice. I am not pro-abortion. I'm pro-choice. There is a huge difference between the two. I don't judge the woman that decides in the end that abortion is her best answer. If a woman is going to choose abortion, then I hope she is able to find a safe and professional environment in which to get one. It isn't up to me or anyone to judge her for her choice. The judgments should be left to God and only God.

Oh , I see... Women going to extreme measures to kill their children. That's a disgusting way for people to think. Perhaps abortion shouldn't be completely illegal, rather each individual should be judged for abortion. If their case if extreme and abortion is necessary: then fine, you can abort. That way , at least women won't be instantly going to underground abortion clinics... Still it's unfair for children to be killed on the basis of "I don't want it." More education about contraception is actually a great idea . We can decrease the number of abortions by teaching young people.

Abortion should absolutely be legal! I think its a sensible option to offer for a baby that would be born with no good quality of life at all, or for victims of rape. I think its a very important option that should be offered. You can always say no if you dont agree with it, but its a life line for some people. I know I couldnt carry a baby to full term if I had been the victim of rape for example.

i wonder how they found out if the baby have down syndrome while still inside the womb as i guess ultrasound is not enough or perhaps theres another way for that, thats scary to know. besides i dont think i can afford to abort my baby as its part of my own flesh and blood. in my situation right now i never think of that besides, who knows if my child will be the one that give me a lot of richness in life nor become one of the famous people someday anyway im still against abortion, unless the mother have illness that might only be risky to her and the baby if she will continue with the pregnancy.

Yes , Vijiboopathy is correct. Aminocentesis is when they put a needle through the amniotic sac in which the baby is kept in during the gestation period and the chromosomal fluid is extracted. The chromosomes are then counted. Humans have 46 chromosomes and if the child is then found to have 47 chromosomes , it is has downsyndrome. It's good that you value human life. I guess you can't ask a mother to kill their child. When Vijiboopathy and I were discussing about the reasons why it is detrimental to the human race to let these children live, we realise that there is motherly attachment to the child, so it's unrealistic for children to killed on the basis of helping humanity. I won't ever understand the attachment that mothers have to their children :/ as I will never be a mother. Yes , also we can't just abort willy nilly because the defective child could end up as someone successful. Someone who could inspire the rest of humanity.

347eat yeah it is the parents fault but have you ever noticed that most of the aborted child were not made out of love? most of them were ACCIDENTALLY made of people especially the youngster who were blown away by their LUST and not LOVE. i accept, i have been into PMS but if my girl will be pregnant i will definitely not abort it. i will stand and take my responsibility..

I agree with markleob. Its the parents fault because they don't use any preventive method besides child is a fruit of love and gift from god so we should accept it as a blessing not as a curse.

Hi, very sad to hear about that. But in some cases we need to have abortion. If we can detect an infant is mentally retarded or physically deformed, we need to have abortion, which will save the child's plight as well as his / her family. Also we as a society can contribute only to a certain extent, but most of the time the father or mother has to sacrifice his / her entire life looking after this child. Also many times this issue becomes a discussion point for most of the people and really we are helpless. We can just help them in terms of money or any other materialistic thing, but we can't take the pains of the child or the child's parents. In this case I think abortion should be considered. For all other reasons for e.g. not wanting a baby girl or not wanting a child at all, the parents should be severely punished.

Perhaps we have to bear some sympathy to these parents of defective children. They have to sacrifice so much in order to care for these children who have to suffer due to comments from people and because of their ailments. However , parents of these children need to remain resilient. Have some hope that the child will make something of themselves. Give the child a chance...

Hi, Is depends case to case basics...abortion consider legal if there is supported by medical condition. For eg. if they found there is an genetic problem such as Down Syndrome ,you may given a choice wheather to abort it or continue the pregnancy ..

When I was a student teacher I taught a down syndrome child. I liked that child. Her mother was a caring lady and she loved her daughter. I taught a lovely down sydrome boy in my Maths class when I was in my third year of teaching. At my son's playgroup I know a couple of down syndrome children. They are delightful and much liked by everyone. A down syndrome child can survive and live a happy life. It is best to continue with the pregnancy and give the disabled baby a chance. I was offered an abortion at 36 weeks pregnancy. I chose life for my spina bifida baby and he is now a happy little three year old.

However , amykok that's essentially murder and for what? So that the mother won't have to take care of a defective child or because the mother is ashamed of the child. It's disgusting that people think like that. Life is precious! Abortion should be made illegal on all fronts unless it's absolutely necessary or if the child is a result of rape. How would you like it if you were found to have down syndrome in the womb and then subsequently killed? . I don't know about you but I'd be really pissed off!

Yes, of course it should be illegal. The unborn is human, that it has human DNA guarantees that and thus is of value. The ill that a woman may suffer in having an unwanted child is outweighed by the ill that human life endures being terminated. That is the only compassionate conclusion. But what of cases where the mother's life is endangered or the woman has been raped. First consider what abortion is; it is a medical procedure undertaken to end the life of the unborn. So a procedure the purpose of which is to save the life of the mother is not an abortion but a life saving operation. Women pregnant as a result of rape bear a great burden it is true but the wrong done to them and the suffering they endure is not good reason to end a human life. All the best urban

This is a very difficult subject to discuss as there are so many different circumstances whereby abortion could be considered legal or illegal! I want to focus on an extreme example of a woman being raped! She certainly did not ask to be raped and if a child is created as a result of this process then she should be within her rights to abort as this would save her going through the pain of child birth. This is just so difficult to discuss and every case is different I'm sure. Perhaps it would be a good thing to make abortion illegal and under exceptional circumstances a potential abortion should be thoroughly investigated as regards reasons on the part of the mother. This will always be a controversial subject and there will be lots of people that agree or disagree with the idea of abortion. Andrew

Very good, Andrew. You've provided another idea why abortion shouldn't be totally illegal. I now realise that some women who are victims of rape wouldn't want a child born out of violence. In fact, it would make it that much harder for the mother to love the child. Each and every case should be treated differently, so I suppose you can't really put a generic "should always do this_____" for everything. TY

i'm a 34 yr old woman. i have never wanted children. i find the idea repellent. so i'm glad abortion is legal in my country. it's the safer option.

It`s not about YES or NO.There are some reasons why women decide to end their pregnancy. For medical reason, yeah, it is for the sake of mother`s and her baby`s health, for example, if the mother is infected by virus that will have bad effect to her baby,or victims of rape. but there are some women who decide to terminate their pregnancy driven by economic reason, career and some people do that because they are irresponsible, let`s say they have an affair, then get pregnant, but they`re not ready.Oh I won`t tolerate that! It should be made legal, but under one condition: there must be a psychiatrist to accompany an obstetrician. Why?Abortion is not seen from medical or moral point of view, but we must consider psychological aspects of patients.Unfortunately, women are always taking the blame when it comes to this issue. Doctors must consider the reasons.

It's disgusting for children to be killed on the basis of "I don't want to". Yes , I do know that in some cases , it is necessary for abortion to take place. Mother's life is danger, etc, etc. Great idea about the psychiatrist. That way we can determine whether mothers will be fit for taking care of their children. Abortion doesn't need to take place in this situation either because the children can still be given up for adoption to couples who can't have children. Thanks for replying , Jas.

I'm completely pro-abortion, so I can't support it being illegal. Many kids don't deserve to have a horrible life because of having a genetic defect that will condition them forever. I hope it goes on being legal in many countries

I suppose in a way abortion is mercy killing but most of the time abortion is due to parents who for social and economic reasons kill their unborn children. That's just a waste of human life...

Im 32 weeks pregnant right now and i love the child inside my womb, whatever God give me i will accept it. Talking about abortion im not in favor with it, imagine killing an innocent baby is a guilt you have to carry with you forever. So i pity those i seen in the news a fetus put in the trash can or in the toilet..A child is not a choice its a gift from God.

Haha. So many responses. I have to hurry up or I'll get no study done! I agree with you , garneta. Abortion is murder but in some cases it is necessary in order to save a mother's life or because her child is the result of rape. Abortion should be illegal on all other fronts though. Thanks for sharing , garneta

I just wanna say a big No to abortion. A child is a gift and not a choice. Its your choice to make love but when it bear a fruit then its a gift. It should be punished whoever do such things. It almost near to murder unless is there a need to be aborted. Fear to God is the beginning of knowledge.

I know that abortion is murder but in some cases it is necessary. For example , a mother who's life is in danger because of the child they carry. We can't ask mother's to die to give birth. Life is precious but the mother's life is also precious. This is what you said and I absolutely agree with you. Abortion shouldn't be a choice rather a requirement... Thanks for sharing , max.
