Just a heads up for my friends

I am going to be a census enumerator, and I am in training this week. I will work perhaps as much as eight weeks, though I doubt there will be that much work. Anyway, I am not keeping up here, and between that and taking two trips this month I will not be making payout here. I feel badly when life keeps me away from my fun here. I will add a little trivia that I just learned. Did you know that each person counted in an area represents $1400 worth of funding from the government per year. Does not sound like much until you realize it is for ten years. If you live in the US, did you send in your census? If not, why not? If not from the US, do you have something like our census?

I have a funny story about this subject. I was running behind on filling my form out. It was term paper and final exam season. So after it sitting on the coffee table for several weeks, I finally mailed it out. The very next day, a census worker showed up at my door. Well, it made me laugh.

I think that happens pretty often. I am glad you can laugh about it. The census worker probably said "Job Security"

I did send in my census form since it is mandated in our constitution. But I didn't answer anything except in regards to how many people lived in my house. The rest of it is none of their damned business and is NOT mandated by our constitution. I hope you enjoy your job! It'll be nice to get out and meet some new people, see new things, etc. We'll miss you but I'm sure you'll love, love, love that paycheck!!

I know many people who had concerns. I imagine you filled in the minimum and I know it changes every year. I do not even remember the last one. Paychecks are helpful, since we are paying for some high water bills due to a leak, and hubby's job keeps having insufficient funds for the paychecks. It has mergered and the checks will start coming from somewhere else.

Yes here in Canada we do have Census and right or wrong we're told it's against the law to not submit one. I don't know if that law is enforced or not but that's what we're told. There are two questions I absolutely refuse to answer certain questions. One is what my income is. Every year even now on disability I have to submit income tax return therefore the government already knows my finances and is no one else's business. Another question that really irradiate me is on this date ------ who slept in your house on this day. Excuse me but really???? How is this a concern? Just asking. Thank You.

The ones I am doing do not have any income questions. They just pick one particular date so that everyone is answering the same. It does sound a little funny the way it is worded. We are to ask who was there on April 1, 2010, and do they usually eat and sleep there.

Grandma, the taxation dept knows your income but the bureau of statistics does not....your name is not connected to any of the information the census asks for...they just want the numbers.

First of all I was just told that I had another census paper at our other home in MT. And, that apparently I did not fill out the first one. I did ! Then I was told that the law would come and see me if I had not filled out the census. We have two homes and I do them individually. Tell me,....does the law come after you if you don't fill out a census?

The one you need to fill out is for the place you were living April 1, 2010. Unless you consider that to be a vacation or seasonal home. Someone like me, an enumerator, will come by if the offices have not got your information. They will go over a questionnaire that has the same questions as were asked on the mailed forms. The census is mandated by the constitution, and refusing to cooperate is a crime. However, just missing the form is not. I think there is a minimum amount of information they will settle for, as well. No one has said just what, other than they need to know how many people were living at each address on that date.

I had a census taker come to this door here in Oklahoma and I asked him how to deal with both places. He told me to do as you have told me. We were both living here in OK on April 1. Still my friend insists I will be seen by the law. I sent in one form for OK with the proper info and if the law comes to see me I will gladly fill another form out. Thanks for telling me this. I am good ! I am not a fugitive LOL I have done all the right things ! Thanks Gerty, quita

Now they are telling us tonight that there may not be any work left to do in our own area. They will pay us to travel to other areas. They do pay us for all of our training time as well.

Hi! I am just finishing up my work with the census probably this week. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be as most people were very accommodating and friendly. The only real problems I had were getting a hold of people who never seemed to be home or didn't speak English. I often had to knock on the doors of the entire neighborhood to find out minimum information about one household. The most common excuse for refusing to do the census with me is "I turned it in (even though it was really late) and I am not going to do this again". Though this advice is too late right now, if you didn't want anyone to knock on your door, then you should have sent something in even if you don't like the census.

We used to pass the forms up, too, but then they got spit back at us and we had to go find a proxy respondant. I didn't like that part.

I am glad that the refusals are not really our problem, we just pass the forms on up. They are now telling us in this group that there may not be any local work for us.

I didn't get a form, but I did get in touch with the census rep and got mine done. The questions were not as personal as many of the media reported that they would be.

Hey, I have another discussion with a link to all the local offices. Things do get lost in the mail. Some people feel that the ethnicity or racial questions are too personal. I also understand that there is another form that is sort of a trial form that is more detailed. I am not being trained for that, however.

Good for you Gerty! We will miss you here on myLot, but I know you, you'll be back and forth I'm sure. I hope your trips are for fun of some sorts, and not just work. I did send mine in right after I received it, so I'm good to go. It was simple enough to fill out, and I just popped it into the mailbox so I'm good to go. The city I'm living in wanted it returned by April 1st, so I did..no biggie. Take care hon, and enjoy your trips!

I had no idea a census taker was called an enumerator. Interesting... Don't feel bad I won't be making payout here either maybe I'll be lucky and make next month or the month after for sure Yes I sent in my census. I thought it was a federal offense not to do so.

There are a lot of jobs I guess, in doing the census. Enumerator is what they are calling my position. You are right, technically it is required that you fill out a form and get counted or that you answer the survey when the follow up people like me come by.It is actually in the constitution. The information is used to determine how many senators you get and things like that.

hi gardengerty my son worked in the early census stuff after taking his training, he was fascinated with it. its odd that here at Gold crest we have not seen any census forms yet and its almost June. I am in Southern California by the way but you probably know that already. I was hoping that each of us would be given our own census forms as the admins would not know anything about my parents at all but I do as I have been into my family tree for years and have plenty of information now.

Hatley, the forms do not ask about your parents. It does ask what race you consider yourself to be. The questions were about where you were living on April 1. I am not positive, but the way I understand it the Admin would have filled out the form for the entire retirement center. It asks if you sleep and eat there most of the time, if you have a mortgage, how old you are and your birthdate. It does ask what race you identify with. This is probably all stuff that is on paperwork that you filled out when you moved in.I am surprised they did not have your son continue with other phases of the census. I am working with some people who have done several things in the process.

Hey Gerty! I didn't know that much about the census, at least money wise! And, yes I completed mine awhile ago and sent it back! So, I'm done! I've been counted and they can now stop bothering me! I wish they let me count my cats too since they live here and have to eat, but there was no category for them! So much for the government!

Yes, we did ours as well. Part of this follow up job is to check on addresses that did not send a form back and see if they are still residences and if they were vacant on April 1.

Yes, we have a census collection in Aus. I have worked as a census collector twice now...way back in 1986 and the last one in 2006. The next one is next year. I have had to drop off a census form to every house in my district whether or not someone is living there. Even though the home is derelict, is has to be counted. We also count how many people live in tents, caravans and boats; how many are living in hotels, in hospital, or in a motel for the night. Each person is counted wherever they happen to be on the day/night of the census...even the overnight trucker is counted. Many people are worried about privacy concerns and this is totally unnecessary. The actual statistics collected are fed into the computers minus the person's name and address details. The bureau of statistics just want the numbers. It's so obvious that many people feel they have a lot to hide and therefore they lie through their teeth on the census forms and therefore the government is unable to get a clear picture of the absolute needs of the community. I firmly believe there is more education needed. Ignorance is rife. Many people do not even understand the privacy act.

I sent in my Census. Soon, you will learn that not everyone got a census. Some people got more than one. Have fun, but don't put much about the census on the internet. Big brother is watching!

Everybody is watching. I try to just state the facts. I know that not everyone got one, that is part of why they send more people out. Not all of them that get mailed back make it either. I have heard about letters that have been lost for decades, and it can happen to official forms as well.

hi GG, i havent been on line for over a week as A) had real difficult problems getting on line, possibly due to my security provider and B) have been away on holiday. i have got myself a 'dongle' or 'stick' to be able to use my laptop while i am away, but the computor 'crashed'while I was trying to install it, so i had to reinstall and go back to my original provider. so i need to consult with our expert who has a place near our holiday home. (when we were away last week we went up to east england on the norfolk coast and very lovely it was too , but our holiday place is on the the south coast) sooooo..... eventually getting to the point, we do have a ten year census in GB, the next one is due in 2011. I must be honest when I filled my very first one in , many many years ago, in 1971,I was about 23 and i did tell some porkies on my form. I got so fed up with the prying questions, that I said my husband was a chartered accountant(he was a milk roundsman) and that I was a solicitor,( i worked in a paper mill) very very naughty i know, but the questions went on and on. I will be interested in the next one, as officially i am a pensioner, although still in full time work. so will have lots to fill in and say. Good luck in your new occupation and I hope you don't get many dishonest 23 year olds like i was !!! see you soon

I'm so happy to hear you got this job! I took the test to be a census taker several years ago and I passed the test. However, I didn't get the job. The test was hard, though. Thank you for posting these statistics. These are very interesting. No, I didn't send in my census, I hate to say. I lost my census paper. What can I do in this case?

That is why they hire enumerators. Someone should come by and they will do a survey with you that covers the material on the form that you had. It happens now and then that someone's form does not get in, so they send people out to check on the addresses. If you still do not hear from anyone, and it should be soon, the local library may be able to help you find the closest office to call.
