Due to temps for a week and a half in the 80's during mid-March things sprang up here in Minnesota way early as far as gardening goes. Then we had 2 nights of killing frost in May. But my strawberries made it through the cold snap. I've picked a few so far including these pictured here. These were picked early today.I had 13 total today and they're gone already as the wife and I ate them for breakfast. HAHAHA! They are sooo sweet. This year my wife plans on trying to make some jam and or jelly from them. Ever make fresh jelly/jam from homegrown fruits? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

I made raspberry jam last year and my son, husband and I loved it, especially with my blackberry muffins...So you have strawberries?? I looked the other day and my berries are just now starting to form, let alone ripen..What are you doing to your garden to make everything ripen or bloom so early??

Send me the recipe for rasberyy jam please? I have lots of red rasberries in my garden as well. I do nothing special. It's just we had a heat wave in March of 80 degree temps and things blossomed way early for us here in Minnesota is all. My rasberry bushes have a lot of fruits forming now as well. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Yes, all my berry plants are doing wonderful, but nothing is ripen yet..As for the jam recipe??? This is embarrassing, I had a premade package where all I had to do is add the berries to it and chill..Nothing special..I would like to learn to make jam without pectin, but I was told if I did, I should have someone who knows how to help me through it, I guess it is very difficult or something..

Thanks for the BR grandpa Bob..Guess what? we are getting up to a cup of raspberries and day and I know that probably doesn't sound like much, but it is much more than we ever had before..In years past if I wanted to make a pie,jam or muffins, we would have to go and find a good patch elsewhere..Now I can just go into my back yard..

Both my grandmas use to do that. So did my great grandma. It's a lost art.

We have some wild strawberries or something growing in our yard, but I don't think they are ones you would eat. I think they are called wood strawberries. From what I have read they are not poisonous, but they have no flavor. My son and I made some strawberry freezer jam a few years ago, but not from home grown fruit. My grandmother used to make it all the time. It was soo good.

I am so jealous, I want to grow strawberries, I have been saying I am going to for years now, I just need to do it. My first tomato is popping out, and I have a few buds on my pepper plants so that is always exciting. I have only made apple jam once, my grandma used to make all kinds of jams and marmalades and I used to watch her. I wish she was still here so she could teach me, I know I could learn on my own but I just wish she was here. Congratulations on your strawberries coming up early.

I used to make jams, preserves and jellies all of the time. I remember doing it with mom as well. We were always on the lookout for sandhill plums as well. They are tart and tasty when made into jams and preserves. You may get me to do strawberries yet, if I can figure out where to put them.

I never did but I remember my mom canning and making jellies when I was growing up. My favorite was the blackberry jam she made, it was heavenly. We lived back east and the blackberries grew wild down by the creek, my mom would have to put on these tall thick boots, and long sleeves to go down and pick them, but she did and would come back and start on the jam. She rented space back then on a farm and had a garden and grew all kinds of things and then spent weeks canning and freezing for the winter months ahead. It looked like so much work, but my mom didn't work outside the home, so she was able to do it. Congratulations on your strawberries making it through the frost. Happy Mylotting!!!

Growing up we had tons of strawberries and concord grapes. We always had lots of jars of jelly and jams from them as mom loved making them. I recall picking wild bluberries up north and picking ticks from our skin as well. Ewwww! I still hate ticks to this day. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Strawberries are sweet? I've never had a sweet strawberry, even from my local farmer's market. They are gritty and nasty, even when put in the blender with sweetener and ice cream. I don't see how people can love them so much, they are nasty.

hi Grandpa Bob oh yes I used to make strawberry jelly and not to brag but I won first prize at the county fair ajnd made the older ladies all mad at me as i was only fifteen at the time, then got grand prize at 21 for my strawberry jam and they were not quite as upset then, my mom also got first prize for her strawberry preserves that same year too.I guess most farm girls grew up making jams and jellies and goingt o the county fair each year.growing up on a farm was such fun for me.

I'm so glad to know that your strawberries have done so well despite the cold snap, etc. They sound so good! They had to be if you and your wife ate them as fast as youall did, lol. No, I never have made any jam or jelly. My grandmother used to make it all the time, though.

Wow! Fresh strawberries. That must have been so yummy! :) I have not tried doing any type of fruit jams or jellies at home yet. Usually I just get to taste jams and jellies sold in groceries. I bet homemade jams and jellies are more delicious compared to those sold in groceries. Homemade is always better.
