One dress too many....

Ok - I really need some guidance on this.
When I was in hostel, nuns stipulated 12 dresses. So that lasted us 6 months or so till mid term vacation. We were growing so the next time we needed a fresh set of 12 dresses.
I unfortunately stopped growing. During college - I was going through tough financial period so it came down to just 6 dresses! I avoided functions. he he.
The trend continued for better part of my service. It was just 6 to 8 dresses. But I managed to add a couple of partywear.
Now - I sit at home. My dresses are rarely worn. In process, I have ended up with 20 dresses - i.e., about 10 dresses for home wear, and 10 for outing or function.
I was just feeling guilty - after all fashions change. Will these dresses then look odd and outdated?
My question to you all is:-
1. How many dresses do you all maintain or have in your wardrobe?
2. How many of these are homewears?
3. How long do your dresses last?
5. How many dresses are too many?

I think?
I have never seen dresses of grown up ladies with pictures of animals - other than in ethnic stuff. Giraffes you say, must look good. :)
Yes, you all are in casuals most of the time. Out here, we dont have that kind of classification. We have nighties which are more like housecoat + nighties. Ladies remain in them and change into outing wear only when they have to go out. There are a few clothes for simple drives and visiting temples, another type for simple get together, a costlier variety for bigger get togethers, and costliest ones for functions like marriages. Actually it doesnt make sense to have so many when we dont use them, because fashions do change, and once a dress is out of fashion, it is truly out. We cant be wearing them 10 years down the lane when the fashion returns, because by the time it gets the old look, and we put on more weight. :) So it is better to stick to few - that is what I think. That is why when I saw my 10 outing wear, I felt bad because I dont use them that often.

Oh Vandana! I am the worng person to answer this question because I am known for my wardrobe and my saree collection.I do not have count of them . THis is my one weak spot but because I have my own money to spend and am not dependent on anyone else, noone minds it. I like to wear good sarees and even what I wear at home are quite decent. But to the question how long they last they last for an inordinatley long time [ranging from 5 to 30 years.]I still have some sarees that I bought before 1986 .I keep these for home wear; they are still good and there is no question of changing fashions here because they are branded synthetic sarees like Bombay dyeing or Garden sarees. On the other hand my husband would keep only the necessary shirts or pants. I am terrible but I have no qualms about this.
I do not feel guilty because I love to wear new attractive sarees and otherwise I do not spend money on any frivolous item. YOu need not feel guilty too.You can afford them; noone is paying for them.YOu have enough savings. THen why bother?

Yeah! I do get your point. But, wearing good outfits that suit you well add to your own feeling of wellbeing when you look at the mirror["Vanity ! Thy name is woman!"
; in your case I would still say that you should buy some more and use them when you go out to the market or for walks[you have a knee problem and if you don't go for walks even if you go to the garden or to a corner shop you can wear them] mine is a crazy level but you can strike a balance. It also depends on your love for new clothes. GIve the old ones away after a certain level of wear and do not wait for them to be totally torn or worn out.

Kala - it also depends upon the kind of social life you have. I tend to be a recluse - and inclined to stay at home, even if there are invitations. So I have home wear, which is pretty decent if you ask me. And rare outings. Why do I need so much? But then what would your advise be considering my tendency to be aloofish.

hello vandana, I think you are really different. Nowadays many women are having hundreds of dresses. I think you can much more than what you have. After all life is short and we have to enjoy it to the fullest.
Now you can afford to buy more dresses, I think.
My dresses can last for about 6 months. I usually have about 10 sets of pant and shirt for outing purpose. I have many dresses to wear at home.
In fact no number is too many as long as you can afford to it...
Why women have more dresses than men at every home? any ideas?

Aunt, I don't have anything to contribute to this topic personally, but here's a general observation. It seems that the fashion of last time are coming of trend back nowadays. If I think it correct, it has always been about retro styling being modified.. there's no originality so much..more towards modification and improvisation..
Eg: Bell bottom jeans, the bee-hive hair-do, that 60s make-up for the ladies, skinny jeans, tucked in shirts with retro long-sleeved casual smarts and many more.

I wear only sarees now. Sarees keep coming to me from my children, relatives, when they visit, for functions of relatives and close friends, husband of course, and for Deepavali, it is our custom to buy new saree. So, whether I need or not, sarees keep coming. I do re-rotate some of them. But my children insist that I should wear myself, whatever they have given me. My daughter has kept a habit of giving five sarees per year to me. Whenever I visit her or meet her anywhere, I should wear a new saree, that is her condition. She says give old sarees to servant and poor people and wear new sarees. Last year I gave 15 sarees to my cousin, who is economically weak. I must have 8 pure silk sarees, 10 costly party wear sarees, around 8 cotton sarees for summer, 10 artificial silks to wear for outings, 8 for house wear. This year also 15 will go for charity or help. So reduce that number from this. We ladies require different types of sarees for different occasions unlike gents, who can wear anything for any occasion. Hence we need more dresses than male family members.

I agree with you. We ladies require more clothes. Each year, I see five or six added. So I am forced to retire a few even though they are not in that bad shape. :) I have an affinity for pastel shades. :) And ethnic wear. :) But my maid would prefer more of shiny and embroidered stuff, you know. :) Even if I spare something like that, which she accepts for her grand daughter, I dont really think she can appreciate them, however costly such stuff may be. They would prefer some colors, which dont catch our fancy. :)

There is no such thing as too many dresses unless there are hungry mouths to feed and no money to buy clothes. I do not wear a dress very often, but I have 2 or 3. Mostly I wear 2-piece outfits when I dress up, but most of the time I do not have to dress up. Then I pretty much live in blue jeans and T-shirts.
Here is a picture of the kind of blouse I like to wear when I go somewhere that blue jeans might be inappropriate. I would wear that kind of blouse with a skirt or over a basic black dress, either way:

I like skirts and blouses better than a dress because they can mix and match.

I could almost see drannhh walking in that dress. :) Its really elegant. :) You've got good tastes.
We have a very hot climate, and in general I have a tendency to sweat slightly more than the others. :)
This is the reason I dont opt for jeans. :) But there are plenty of others who wear them. Then again capris and shorts are great but where I live, it wont be accepted as easily. :) People here are conservative. :) Under the circumstances, I work for pants and shirts, or salwar kameezes. More of salwar kameezes they let the skin breathe. :)
I love cottons, synthetics scare me. :) I am ok with silks. Actually our dresses are not very expensive either. :) I bought a nice ethnic salwar kameez set which cost me about 35 dollars, with all accessories. :) That perhaps is the reason Indian women buy so many clothes. :)

Hi Vandy! I am somewhat like Oshy! I like those Gypsy flowing
long skirts, although I hardly ever wear even those anymore!
I also wear mostly shorts or capris (pants somewhere between
midcalf and below the knee) in Summer and jeans and sweatpants
in Winter to stay warm! In the US it sometimes isn't about style!
I haven't worn a dress in years! Too many, in fact to count!
We just don't have reasons here for them! I am on Disability,
no longer work (I wore skirt suits when I did) and hardly even
go out of the house much these days! So, haven't bought a real
dress in many years! Things are very different here in the US!
Much more casual as Mental Ward explained!

vandana! Like you, I too won't spend much on dresses. I just have five set of dresses in total, of which two is for functions and three for regular use. And I use to purchase new dresses, once in a year. And I don't care about fashions. I stuck up with my college days and I see it more comfortable. For me, more than ten set of dresses is too many.

Earlier I wanted to buy dresses. :) I actually needed them. After working 12 hours each day of the week, on Sundays, I was forced to wash all those clothes and starch them. :) Too tiring Sundays. :) Now that I can afford clothes, I see no point. I dont go out, I earn from home. :) I need just 4 or five for outing and about 7 for homewear. :) Instead I have 10 for outing. And annually I seem to be adding a few. :)

Hi Vandanaji
I have some 20 pairs in total, they are full pant, full sleeve, half sleeve shirts, T shirts and paijama-kurtas , i use them all, while in home i prefer just 'lungi and sandow'..
But my wife has more than 200 sarees, some are very costly, the Sambalpuri silk sarees are speciality of my city Sambalpur, may cost upto 50,000 , depending upon hand woven patterns and fineness, many of the sarees she has, are just worn once or twice, no chance to wear in futute, she is quarreling with me since last 4 days to get another for the coming Sabitry amawas festival, she will be fasting for me..
I have to bring one, no way out..
Thanks for sharing.
Welcome always.
Cheers.

Wow, that's great! But she is into all those functions, which means she has to keep up with joneses. :) I am not into it. :) I tend to be a recluse! So there is difference in what we need.
And do buy her one. She is quite cute looking lady. :)
Have a good day professor. :)

Hi vandana7, When i was young i used to have very limited dresses about 15 dresses i feel out of 15 dresses i used to wear only 10 dresses to college. 5 dresses which are more good those i used to keep for party/functions/marriages wear. Those time we are fully satisfied with all the dresses coz i used to use it fully. And my father and mother also very strict about each and everything, they don't want to waste money simply buying clothes and keep it in safe which are kept as useless. Now after my marriage i have many clothes since i used to go for a job and i feel to wear daily one dress which looks elegant. That time i don't have party wear or house wear difference, only at the night i am wearing night dress. Now after passing on days my clothes got added to it more. Now i have more than 70 dresses / sarees. I will give it off to some one servant/redcross/church or needy people when i get bore to wear it. Still i have 70 dresses as of now. At present i am not doing any job since i have a small child, simply sitting in the home so i will keep only 10 dresses for daily wear. I will be changing them once in 3 months. All other nice clothes are in the wardrobe simply getting old.
I feel all the time i should not buy whenever i go for a shopping, everytime i will tell to myself this is the last time, and i will repeating the same mistake when any festival comes, again i will purchase. I will not understand is it necessary to purchase clothes for each festival. This become an habit.

Exactly. We've Sankranthi, Ugadhi, my birthday, vinayak chavithi, dasara, and deepavali each year, not to mention the new year. 7 dresses! I take at least 3 years to retire an old one! That is multiplying them rather fast! I have started using same dress for two festivals because it doesnt make any sense having so many clothes, especially since I dont use them.

No according to me one dress is not for every ocassion because every dres have a code to wear in a particular time so aacording to one dress cannot be work for many family ocassion if suppose you wear a party dress in a deadth ocassion then what impression goes to other so onr dress cannot work for many ocassion.

Hi Sharad, I agree different ocassions call for different dressing. But what is the point in having 10 sarees of same type and not using them at all after 5 years, especially if they are expensive ones? I do receive invitations for marriages, and functions. I however do not attend many of them. Partly because I find myself to be a misfit there, and partly because I get bored. I also do not relish the rich food. So I tend to find a way to avoid functions rather than participate in them. :)

1. I have maybe 5 dresses right now. I do not go out to places where a dress would be more appropriate than anything else so I don't need many.
2. About 3 of these dresses I wear at home. Normally, I wear shorts or slacks but occasionally wear a dress in the summer when it's very hot. These dresses are light cotton.
3. My dresses can last many, many years. I try to buy basic dresses with very little "style", like the basic black dress. I will add a jacket, belt or other embellishments to alter the look of the dresses so it is like I have many more dresses than just a few.
4. (You called this one #5) I think it's entirely up to the individual to decide how many are too many. It will depend on how often you go out, attend functions where a dress would be more appropriate, wearing dresses to work, what you are more comfortable wearing while at home.
I do not work because of disabilities. I do a lot of gardening so dresses are not very appropriate or comfortable. Shorts and a blouse are much more comfortable while I'm doing my gardening.
Also, my husband is very close to being a hermit. He doesn't like going out much at all and we rarely have dinners or parties at our house so there is really very little need (or desire) for me to wear dresses. It's only when it is very hot outside that I like wearing dresses around the house because they are looser with more air flow and nothing constricting around my waist.

Even mine last many years. I have this bad habit. I tend to overuse some, and under utilize some. By the time the over used ones are write offs, the under utilized ones become tight. :) And it is the good ones that get under utilized. :) I dont like them getting damaged. :)
As to your interpretation - I meant all clothing - including shorts and slacks. So how many would that be in total.
You are quite like me - may be better. :)
I was just thinking this morning - 14 is all that I need - 7 for home wear, and 7 for outing. It was a different issue when I was at office.

I don't count how many dresses do I have in my wardrobe but I am pretty sure that my closet is overcrowded with it.
When I was younger I used to wear hand me downs from my sister. But when I started working and earning on my own, I started buying clothes that I really like. Some are expensive that lasted for almost 5 years, some are not so expensive and ended up as homewears after years of wearing them.
I also have dresses that I don't bother to wear again after the first time but, I still keep them.I have so many homewears because I tend to get really sweaty and dirty when doing the chores so I have to change more often.
Despite of this, I don't feel guilty.I bought and worn them in good purpose and not just for the sake of spending for something that I don't really need.
