Another Major Recall of Pet Food....IAMS Proactive Health Canned Food

I just got this info from a friend of mine, that IAMS is recalling theire IAMS Proactive Health Canned Food and all varieties and sizes of cans. The IAMS company is under Procter & Gamble which is making the recall and according to them the reason for insufficient levels of added Thiamine which could lead to a serious deficiency and cause health problems. According to this website thiamine deficiency can create the following problems: Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include loss of appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. In advanced cases, signs may include ventroflexion (downward curving) of the neck, wobbly gait, falling, circling and seizures The dates of the cans involved are 09/2011 to 06/2012 Source of info http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm214996.htm Now I've never used IAMS pet food period in all the years I've had cats, and especially now since I've heard real negative practices that are done by this company that could border on animal cruelty. Also, one can't help forget the massive recall of pet foods back in March of 2007 in which IAMS was among a multitude of pet foods being recalled and caused the death of many pets, both cats and dogs. Just thought I give cat owners the heads up if you do use IAMS canned cat food. Do you use IAMS? Or are you a tad nervous about that company due to that past recall?

hi pyewacket I do not have a pet here much as I would like a cat because they would raise my rent and I cannot afford that. whenwe did have pets we never used Iams as it was always so much more expensive than other pet foods. We got dog and cat food at of all places a store that specialized in horse and cow and other livestock feed but also had organic cat and dog food at a price equal to the stuff we had bought in the grocery store. they both thrived on it too, our cat and our dog. I do miss not having a cat.

You know it's almost "weird"...but one time I was actually thinking of buying some IAMS for my cats but something made me stop...and guess when it was? Just shortly after the major pet food recall of March of 2007 was announced..good thing I listened to that inner voice NOT to get it...who knows what could have happened to my babies? I sure wish my pampered kitty now would eat home cooked food but she'll only eat fancy feast......maybe I could slowly wean her into it???? Shame you can't have a cat

I have never used IAMS pet food, but I always had a good impression of the company. I guess I was wrong. I imagine it would take a while for the deficiency to show up in a pet. Hopefully no pets will die from this problem. I remember the last pet food recall. It started out just cat food and it ended up being all pet foods were affected. I don't recall that company having a problem then, but I didn't have any pets, so I probably didn't follow the story as close as I would have.

IAMS actually has a lousy reputation as they experiment on cats and dogs and no pet rescuer I know will feed IAMS to pets. Yes IAMS was amongst the recalled pet foods of 2007...many pet foods were then as they were all manufactured by the same company..that is Menu Foods.

I was not aware of that! If and when I get another pet I will remember not to buy their products.

Years before the recall, I used to use IAMS. But it was only dry. I didn't use cans. I only use cans during hot weather like 80 degrees or higher. Cats may not drink enough water in high heat, so I supplement with a can a day or if over 90s maybe 2 cans and over 100 degrees, I might use 3. Often one of the cans is people tuna.

I've never used IAMS in all the years I've had pets...and that's been since I was five years old. One time I WAS all set to buy a few cans as a treat, but something inside told me not too..a few weeks later that's when the major recall in March 2007 occurred. Odd no?

ESP, gotta love it. Too bad more people didn't have it. Their animals would be better off and some would even be here today.

No, I don't and never have tried Iams. The mere idea of "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." type of thing. I'll stick with what the vet told me - 9-Lives because of their urinary tract is so sensitive and this has the lowest ash and won't cause any problems in the future but of course after all the prescription medicine my poor male had to endure before we figured it out. Stuck with 9-Lives and had no trouble since. Male or female and I've had quite a few. I think it's served me well. lol

Actually I would love to home cook my kitty's food...a lot of people do this, but my fussy baby doesn't really care for people food...unless I do the same thing...mix it for a while with pet food

Maybe if you mix the two together, she'll learn to accept it a bit easier. I'm not sure about the ash content in Fancy Feast but mixing the two together, maybe even a little at a time, she'll get to liking it. Who knows.

Hey pye! Thanks for the warning, once again! I have never used IAMS and since the last recall never would have thought about it! I use Friskies Cat Food in Cans and their Dry Cat Food! I have never had any problems with it and my cats love it! I have never heard anything bad about Friskies and hope that I never do! I stick to what I know and when I took my cats to the vet a few months ago when Star had a bladder infection I asked my new Vet what he thought about the food I was feeding Star and Luna and he said that was fine! Now if the Vet endorses it then it's ok! I told him the problems I had in the past with my last two cats, and that they were way overweight and what I think I did wrong and he told me that my cats were about 13 pounds and a normal weight and to keep doing whatever I was doing! I had never met him before, was referred to me by a trusting neighbor with a cat and his waiting room was filled with animals! I liked everything about him! He handled my cats with ease, even Luna who is a certifiable lunatic! So, I feel safe enough with the Friskies until I hear anything different!

So far..knock on wood, I've never heard anything bad about Fancy Feast which is Purina...it's the only thing my prima Donna Kissy will eat. Ironically some of the more natural Organic type pet foods have been recalled and they are supposed to be better and safer nutrition wise...but too darn expensive! I don't know what Kissy weights but she is a bit..uh.....chunky???

LOL--I know what you mean..my Kissy is fussy like that...she doesn't like shredded, grilled or sliced brands of cat food...LOL

Friskies Cat Food is also made by Purina, thank God! So I guess we are both doing ok, knock on wood! I never bought Fancy Feast because the boys were fine with Friskies! They just won't eat anything that is "shredded"! God forbid if you make a mistake and buy them a can of shredded anything! They will walk away from it no matter what! Excuse me!lol

I never could afford Iams & have heard a lot of negative things about their practices which really turned me off!!! They were one of the top brands on the last recall, so I moved them even further down on my list of foods to buy. Now they are at the VERY BOTTOM of my list. For my dogs, I usually buy Alpo as Alpo has NOT been involved in any of the pet food recalls that I've seen. Plus, my dogs LOVE Alpo!!! Thanks for warning us of this recall!!!!

Yes no doubt you've heard how IAMS experiments on pets that borders on what could be considered animal cruelty..on top of that Proctor and Gamble owns IAMS and THEY are the leaders in experimenting and testing on animals for products we use

Yep, they claim to love & take care of our pets, then they torture animals all in the name of research. I don't care much for two-faced people & even less of companies that practice the same deception!!!

Lately I don't trust any brand. My cat was sick after eating wellness food (supposedly perfect brand). I think that it is so hard to trust most manufactures. Any company with mass-production sooner or later will have the problem. Maybe home cooking is time consuming, but I cook every other day and I am training my dogs to have more vegetables with each meal. My cat loves greens and I have to give her daily dose of fresh salad. Dogs love green beans and orange peppers. My pets are after holistic consultations and on the way to have limited kibbles served. IAMS have not so good reputation for years. There is one company from Canada making holistic food for cats and dogs (Petcurean Pet Nutrition ). I hope we can keep our animals safe and healthy. While the company is all about profit, we want to keep our babies (cats and dogs) alive.

home cooking from fresh ingredients is always the best for animals and people....also shocking news...it may also cost less if prepared with right proportions.

I sure wish my cat would eat home cooked foods...I guess I would have to slowly wean her away from commercial pet foods. If you knew the truth of what is in commercial pet foods no one in their right mind would ever feed them to their pets. And yes, some "organic" natural pet foods have been recalled as well

Hi Pye, glad to see you! Another recall hmm? What a bunch of crap already and I wonder how long these poor cats have been eating it, ya know? I've never used IAMS, only Purina products and I was very satisfied with them over the years. I don't think, but I might be wrong, that they ever had a recall that I remember. Nice of you to give everyone this warning as I'm sure lots of people haven't heard about it. Take care hon.

Yes it does make you wonder how long cats may have been eating this food already. The last time IAMS made a recall in 2007 IAMS actually knew about the problem months before. Made a special call today...putting official closure on Pyewacket

I am not surprised. A person just can't trust the products we buy anymore. IAMS was supposed to be the elete of cat food companies. Ofcourse they have been around for awhile. Did it all go to their heads or had they been following these practices all along and it just took awhile to get caught?

While IAMS is supposed to be the creme de la creme of pet foods, they actually have a bad reputation for "experimenting" on cats and dogs--no pet rescuer I know will feed pets with IAMS

I didn’t know about the past recalls. I don’t use IAMS and I never have in fact I don’t give my cats canned food at all. I feed them Purina biscuits and Fancy Feast as a special treat only. I am shocked and I have to wonder if many of the illnesses our pets come down with are the result of badly made pet foods! It’s very distressing as I lost Friday due to stomach and bowel problems. I hope I’m not harming my two by feeding them the way I do. Thanks for letting us all know...

I only feed my pampered Kissy Fancy Feast, but yes, one has to wonder if maybe the reason our pets get illnesses is from the foods we're feeding them...look how many food recalls there have been with "people" food lately

Hi Pye! Thankfully, I've never given any of my pets IAMS pet foods. I'm leary of many of the 'higher end' foods, especially since many of them have been involved in various recalls. An argument could be made that they subject themselves to more testing, leading to more recalls. Maybe, maybe not. I've always fed my cats Purina pet foods, and all of them have lived well into their 20's. Also, the veterinarian that we use worked for them while he was in veterinary school. He lauded the quality control measures, cleanliness and commitment to producing the best foods they could based on the most current nutritional data reports. I don't see the need to spend twice as much and not get anything for it.

I've always fed my cats during the years Purina pet food too. Believe it or not, in the past year several "organic" type pet foods have been recalled too, so they're not necessarily safer either

I agree. Purina, over the years, has had very few recalls, too. I'm sticking with them. For our dogs, I make their food using a human-quality grain/herb mi from Sojos.com. I feel better adding our own meat, fruit and veggies. At least I know what's in it...lol.

I am not nervous about IAMS.I DO NOT use it. I also do not use OLE ROYS, the wal mart brand either. I have no proof but think the the old Roy brand made two of my dogs sick. I think we should all pay attention to what our animals need as well as pay attention to the abuse these companies put animals thru. I would rather buy raw hamburger than to feed IAMS.

I never use IAMS product or other commercial dog food. I only feed my dog with home made food thats really fresh and balanced diet. I think we all know that all commercial pet food is using preservative that in long term will affecting our pet health. I ever hear that using home made food will increase our pet life expectancy for several years. So I go with it although its more time consuming than buying commercial dog food.
