Hi folks, Our shop was mugged this afternoon and I felt so bad about it, but later on, I just prayed and ask for safety next time. And as I walk my way home, i got a thought that made me curious, "Why do some people steal when they are in need?" So I just wanted to see your thoughts about this big question that is running in my mind right now. Thanks and happy mylotting to all!!

I am sorry to hear what happened sweetie. These things really piss me off, excuse the french. I would never do something illegal, no matter what. I won't stoop as low as that kind. It's not being poor, they get this kick out of robbing people. They are bad news, we should get rid of them. TATA.

Kiddo this was a simple straightforward robbing! What if the staff members were looking at you to generate funds in time for their salary? Would you sell a disputed plot to get them their salary? Would that qualify as ego trip or necessity? Life is too complicated kiddo. :)

You have mentioned why they steal. It is because they are in need and there is nothing or noone they can turn to. Im sure you know that most people who are poor usually have little friends or people who care for them. In turn, they steal because they cannot get what they need, not want, and because noone cares about them so why should they.

Oh yes, you reminded me! Some of them actually do what they do after sniffing rugby. I hope I am getting to what you are trying to tell me now. Other than that, some of them have got the guts because they have tried it before and were successful.

I genuinely believe that the majority of people have some kind of bad thought or thoughts within their life time! These thoughts can amount to pure fantasies of illegal activity and there is nothing wrong with this as long it remains in the mind and is not released into some kind of action! I think when it comes to stealing, this is wrong pure and simple! However, in the past we have heard of poverty stricken families and how they would steal food as they were hungry and in desperate need. In this kind of situation I guess the stealing is justified if that makes any sense! They had to steal in order to survive. I don't think that this applies in today's society though, I may be wrong! I'm thinking of the situation in London! In third world countries this may be taking place although this is pure speculation on my part! I personally have thoughts of illegal activity, I have no shame in admitting this but I would not convert these thoughts into action, I just could not do it. When you are in a desperate situation though there's no telling what you might do! Andrew

Hello and welcome to this conversation my friend! Think you are very right about that, it's OK to be an outlaw as long as it is only in your mind and not applying it in real life. Thanks sir and happy mylotting to you!

No, I wouldn't. There are legal means, so why resort to something against the law? I think people need to work harder at putting themselves in others' shoes. What if? It is not easy to be the victim of any crime. We should always put ourselves in the place of others. Do we want to be done the same thing?

Well said! Stay legal and may all good things happens to those who are working honestly.

Hi cartrightGIS! Sorry to hear about your shop. As to why do some people steal when they are in need it just beats me as it has to you. I suppose when one is angry or hungry his emotions tend to cloud his rationality. The line that normally divides the right and wrong tends to be obscured. Survival becomes more distinct and important. But how about the rich who shoplift not out of need but more for the thrill and pleasure?

I just wanna add that I'm not saying that I would. It's just not right.

hi. sorry to hear about your shop being mugged, but to answer your question, under certain circumstances, yes if would break the law. for example, if some bloke hurts one of my daughters, the law says that i cant smash his face in, but i can tell you now, that wouldn't stop me. As for stealing, if it meant it got food in my kids mouths, then yes - ultimatly i would anything for my kids, legal or not

cartrightGIS, As far as my needs are concern, I just would not resort to crime to fulfill it and jeopardize my future or my love ones with these insensible and harmful acts. I am sorry to learn of whatever had befallen on you and I do hope that you are unscathed. I really cannot answer how and why people like your perpetrators could and want to resort to such a destructive act but I just would not want to bother too much. Just report this incident to the police and let them deal with it where hopefully avoid another similar situation befalling onto someone else. Not forgetting the fact that the severity factor may increase on the next incident. Take care and have a nice day.

There are a lot of reasons that people would do such terrible act. It might be wrong but I believe they have reasons that is I think is right for them at that given time. It may not be appropriate but when things get crazy in life, people don't think as straight as it seems, one is because out of need or at the edge. But do I have to do illegal just get back with them, for now, I don't know. I just need to decide for it when it's time for me to cross that line. It's a different story when you're at in already than just far away thinking of it. Yet I have this feeling that I won't be doing anything bad at all and let the course of time run its own. Just trust and believe that things happened for a reason even those are bad things.

Hello. I think I would have to be really down on my luck and have children who are hungry before I would ever think of stealing. I would dumpster dive first and run all out of other options before stealing. It just isn't worth it in the long run. Some of these stealers you may be speaking of may be gang members and have to do this to become a member. You just never know.

that maybe true, still, they should think of their future, reputation and their name before they even take the fist step to do it. Thanks my friend.

They steal when they need to satisfy their hunger and once they do it then they just think "why shouldn't we steal whatever we want?". They consider it easier than working hard for it. So then it would be difficult for them and if they are weak ethically then they can do anything they want to do and hence they settle in life by stealing whatever they want to do.

Sorry about what happened man :( If it's about the topic: If really needed, I'll consider doing something illegal as long as It wouldn't hurt someone in any way (I don't think that something really exists) ... BUT ONLY if I really need to do so (like someone's life will be endangered or some sort). Don't get me wrong, I'm a good person, it's just about the topic. Please don't hate me for this.

Hi Cartright! I have compromised on monetary values in the past, so it would be wrong on part to say I dont or wouldnt do anything illegal. Back then, it was my financial necessity. Now, I dont think I would do it. But you never know, which desire gets hold of you intensely prompting you to do that. Hopefully, I will not do anything wrong. I definitely would not like to hurt another person, or steal from another person. That is because I wouldnt like that to happen to me. :)

desperate times in people lives can lead them to do desperate things...people tend to do crazy things when they really feel that there's too much pressure in their lives. but those people who steal just for the fun of it are just plain crazy..
• Philippines
6 Jul 10
For fun, peer pressure, times of need but no one can help them, or plain trippin', stealing is stealing! i mean they are a lot of things they can do to earn cash! like doing part-time jobs, or get a 1-day contractual jobs or or same stuff like jobs. Thanks for the comment!

Hi Mr. cart sorry to hear from you what happened in your shop this afternoon. I suggest that you try to put and stick a HOLY NAME of JESUS outside of the main door of your shop. About your question that why do people have to steal? It's simply they are badly needed and they do not think what will happen to them if they were caught by the Police and neither they were not afraid on the judgement day of their lives. So let's just better think of the right perspective, that you are lucky that no one was hurt from you or any of your family members. And still blessed that you are in a right mind that you don't have to think what the stealer did when they are in need of money.
