My friend is over weight and now she is 82Kg approx. She tried her best to reduce her weight like walking , jogging, physical exercise and breathing exercise etc. But the result is slow. Can you please suggest your way of reducing the weight?

Hi Vathsala, Cutting down on sugar intake, avoiding bananas and walking briskly for long durations regularly ,help in this.I am still to do it and am currently getting away because I am tall. I was happily indulging in sweets and this has contributed greatly to my weight.javascript:__doPostBack('ctl00$cphMainContent$lbStart','')

Hi Kalav I am also not slim to that matter. I will gulp down, cream biscuits, pastries, ice creams, sweets and deep fried items with much more happiness with out any limit. I am also gaining weight rapidly. But i will follow your tips for myself soon and cut down sugar, bananas and other things rich in calories.

Hi friend, if all these efforts have failed its better to consult professionals on the subject.

Yes. You are correct and that is the best option I suppose. Efforts are not failed but very slow response is there. There are health clubs, spas, fitness classes and gyms but it is very costly and beyond reach of an ordinary lower middle class man

If you can control diet then Kapalbhanti Pranayam everyday for 30 minutes at stretch will sure help you.

qick weight loss is bad for you. Taking it slow, will help you keep it off, although discouraging. I tried so hard to be careful of everything and when I wnt to my Dr for my check up, in 3 months I had only lost 2 pounds!!! I was so disappointed, but she told me not to worry about it because even though it was only 2 pounds it REALLY showed, and she had noticed I had lost. I am trying very hard to only drink water. I have cut out BREAD in any form all most all of the time. I have changed my meat to almost only turkey. I try to watch the sweets, (I love chocolate!) Although my weight hadn't gone down, my cholestrol had dropped. Walking is one of the best exercise. Expensive equipment isn't necessary, climb stairs, repeat it even if you are not doing anything but going up and down the stairs, run up a flight of stairs if you can. Read through some of the other topics here on weight loss, there is one with a lot of exercise equipment replacement helps. If you are up to it, go to the park and 'play' on the play ground equipment, the kids will love it, the exercise will be great and you will be surprised at the results you will get, if you do this regular. Best of luck to you and your friend.

Wow! christmas dear, Really i am tempted to do all the things you have explained in this discussion. This issue is worrying me a lot. Not only to my friend but to me also it is helpful as i am no less than a bulldozer but since i am height,it is not looking bad but belly is looking like a pregnant lady and at any cost i want to reduce it. Thanks for sharing your views with important tips and useful info

You are very welcome. I too, have that 'belly'. I tell everyone I look like a 'ruffled potato chip, with air pockets!' Really what you drink can have a big effect. About 14 years ago, I gave up drinking anything except water and I droped from a size 12/14 to a size 7! Then I started drinking orange juice and lemonaid! I need to get back to my water diet and no matter what, not eating anything after 6 pm. and that is hard as we always eat a late supper! My husband likes to eat after he is all done for the day. That jelly donut (very yummy!) was not a good idea today. Sure tasted good though. I really believe if you can cut the drinks down to water and cut out the breads and sweets and the fats, although the results may seem slow, you will start to notice them. At least you have a partner to work with and that will be great, you can encourage each other, and take walks to gether. The end of this week we are going to our church campgrounds and I walk ALL over it, it is a lot of up and down hill too, so if I can keep the other things under control maybe the week will be very helpful. Very best of luck to you.

Hi, vathasala, I think you know better than me in these things. Anyway let me give my suggestions. Ayur vedic medicines, yoga, walking can help a lot. She must avoid meat, cheese and other high fat content foods. She can take honey with water. She can avoid excess eating. She should avoid stress (thinking of over weight)

I also feel that once w e become middleaged , we have acquired reasonable skill in cooking and so we make good tasty food and also indulge at times.WE Tend to add on weight.

Wow! Vijayanths, My knowledge is no where besides that of yours. You are indeed so great . I think first i must follow these and reduce my weight ( practice before you preach. he he he). Generally ladies are tempted to over eat ( not all but me )

Not only that kala, we ladies do not like to waste food.So after serving b/f or lunch or dinner, to our family members, the remaining stuff will enter our stomach whethe we like or not. So that is how mainly we put on weight eating all the left over food besides, gulping down ice cream, biscuits, pastries and all the bakery items. I will empty one full pkt of uncle chips and bingo, which i like most and no need to tell about dairy milk chocolate big size, which will disappear in my mouth within minutes making me bloat like a balloon

So, you are fit as a fiddle now, i think. Great. Keep it up
• India
10 Jul 10
Hi Yugasini Garu I think we need not reduce the intake of our regular food but change the style of food, and replace salads instead of deep fried food and greasy pastries. Drink atleast 2 litres of water a day. avoid bananas and papaya, instead can take sweetlime, apple and other fruits that are less in calories

if your friend is only slowly losing the weight it could be because the walking jogging and physical excersise is converting the weight to muscle which weighs more than fat and therefore makes it seem as though it is taking forever to loose the weight.i would suggest a healthy low fat diet plenty off fruit and veg less carbs which bulk you up plenty of fibre and moderate exercise
• India
30 Jul 10
No mojosunset. She is not doing any now a days due to poor health. But I will let her know about your diet tips which sounds best and ask her to do moderate exercise
• India
13 Jul 10
All the mentioned exercises would definitely do good, but with that she also needs to have a controlled diet, she should cut down on carbs and reduce intake of rice. She should go along more with fruits and juices and should have a healthy breakfast, moderate lunch, but finish her dinner within 6:00pm. Hope it works out...

Hi keep_watch What ever you said, it is totally correct. Along with the physical exercises, one should follow dieting too to control the excess weight.

Is she building muscle? I heard that if you do some weight training that it quickens the metabolism and helps to burn calories faster.
• India
13 Jul 10
No. She is not doing anything like that. I too heard that by doing so it quickens the metabolism and helps to burn calories faster. But the moment we stop doing it, we quickly regain the weight that is lost.

The best thing for me was cutting carbs and the treadmill. Lost about 20 lbs the first month and about 5-9 each after. Each person is different, but cardio takes it off just about anybody!
• India
13 Jul 10
Hi melndolla You are correct. Yes carbs is the main culprit in weight gaining and if we cut down, may be we can reduce our weight. Treadmills can be helpful but all can not afford it and gyms are also dearer now a days. Especially for lower middle class people feel it costly

Try to have food at fixed times of the day. You can stretch these times by half an hour, but anything more than that is going to affect your eating pattern, the result will either be a loss of appetite or that famished feeling which will make you stuff yourself with more than what is required the next time you eat.

Hi besthope Yes that is what happening now with her besthope. irregular eating habits is there with her. But now started doing breathing exercise and physical exercises and walking daily for 30 minutes

do u know any thing abt "yoga" - an indian exercise for a lot of health problems. it shows results very quickly. but it cant be explained in words like this. u need to be taught some positions of sitting, walking etc., by vizualising. its better for u to buy a book of yoga and learn that. it i'll surely show the quick result.

Yes Rajesh, I have a little knowledge about pronayama and yoga and once upon a time I was doing too and reduced my tummy size to a certain level. Later on due to the lack of time unable to continue and i am becoming like a balloon day by day

I am of the opinion that your friend should eat less and exercise more. It's the principle of losing weight. And perseverance is so important that she'd better resist the delicious food.I think yoga is effective,at least it's useful for me. So maybe she can have a try,but pls. pay attention to my reminder , just do it everyday if possible. Wish her best luck~

Hi xiaomo This idea is good as far as i am concerned. Actually we should eat less but at short intervals, One should not starve. I advised her to skip one meal and instead take one cup full of sprouts, fruits and salads. In the morning too instead of heavy breakfast, one cup full of any soup, with one ripe banana

Needless to say, exercise is crucial to weight loss. You can't expect to sit on the couch all day, sip water and lose weight. Join a good gym that lets you work with weights. It will help you build muscle and your metabolism rate will increase. Besides, you also can try to eat 5 times a day. Start with breakfast, the more you eat for breakfast, the less food you will want to eat at night. Please don skip breakfast because it is very important.

Ask her to take oats porridge everyday. I am doing it since few months and I have reduced a bit. Instead of breakfast, I take one big glass full of oats porridge everyday morning. Another thing is thyroid will cause weight gain. She has to consult the doctor for that.
• India
13 Jul 10
Hi Yes, Thyroid problems also leads to weight gain. This is a good point which is to be checked. May be if the yoga, pranayama and dieting is done properly weight will be taken care of
