How does one tackle a RAR archive?

I downloaded some songs from a music site and i am unable to play the music when I click on the file I get Winrar diagonistic message which stops the song from playing...I am not computer savvy, can someone plz help me with this? I have a few more such music files which are refusing to open...

Hi Kiran! I think, your PC does not support the file and it means it does not have the requisite software to play the songs. Either try to download the requisite software to play the songs or download songs from some other site. All the best.

Thats what I have come to feel deepak that I need a requisite software . Anyway I am planning to take the laptop for a service and will ask the technician to look into it- I have given up because my knowledge is very limited as far computers go ...

Yes lots of useful information deepak, the only problem is my ignorance on such matters...thats why I thought I would take it to a technician and ask him to show me how to do it...After seeing your 10000 number I just wondered whether we would all be here discussing and interacting when you reach 100,000 and me somewhere on the way to it ....

I use a program called 7-Zip, it unzips .RAR files and it's free. You'll have to put it in the MyLot search engine because I don't remember the website that I downloaded it from.

they are win rar files and that means you have to install win rar software (a very small software) which you can get here http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm just download and install that and you can access the file and then you need to extract them and you are done.

Thanks a lot amitav , will give it a shot....The main problem being here is my ignorance about technicalities involving the computer and the internet.i do have a win rar software on my computer and it still doesnt work,...

Sorry for the late reply Usha, 'chandipath' is going in my home, i am sure the problem you are facing is due to corrupt files, some portion is missing.. i too had downloaded, i extraced that to a file, but thogh it was said to be 23 minutes long, it played foe 3 minutes only.... Download the files again and then try to unrar it again. If it still wont open, uninstall your winrar AND winzip (you don't really need to uninstall winzip but you can just use 7 zip for your zip files and rar files). Just get the 7 zip (free) and use it on your rar file.

Hi, Thanks a lot for the suggestion.I will try it out...I am unable to download the files because the link has expired.It was at a music sharing site and there is a time limit there.But I will try to uninstall the winzip and see if it helps...all the best

if u have tried all that is suggested here, then it is right to conclude that the file u downloaded is corrupt. But u said u have other such music file refusing to open, I hope u installed the right WINRAR on ur computer. Installing 32-bit WINRAR on 64-bit OS could present such a problem

The problem is that I am quite ignorant about it and have been trying ...I am not sure what capacity WINRAR I have on my comp, will check it out ...I guess one learns with such experience , thanks a lot for the response

Yes in my own way I have been doing a lot of things none of which seems to be working.I feel that it is corrupted, however others who downloaded the file along with me have had no problem with it, so it makes me think that I am not doing something right...
