I burned my arm about 2 weeks ago.
Kind of embarrassing, actually - why I hadn't mentioned it.
A few days after I burned it, I scraped the top layer of skin off (OUCH) and so, since I was already going to Whole Foods http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/ (just so you know, Whole Foods started here in Austin) for something else, I decided to ask for something for the burn as well.
I got this stuff... Country Comfort Herbal Savvy http://stores.countrycomfortherbals.com/Detail.bok?no=5 and started using it.
I'm not sure how often I should be using it, but I have used it at least once a day on my arm, more when I remember.
The last couple of days, tho, the arm has been itching - I know, it's a sign it is healing, but !!! and the skin is so delicate that I sure don't want to SCRATCH it!
The scab came of yesterday (from scraping the top layer of skin off) and today, after being pretty "quiet" most of the day its suddenly driving me crazy itching!
oh - Maggiepie didn't like the look of the salve, it is green from the aloe vera
so, you do any thing as dumb as I did? did you end up trying to avoid talking about it?

I've never had this experience before, better take care you..
These are some myths I've heard about burning, but I think it's best not to follow lest of side-effects.. some say to heal* it under a running tap, some said to apply toothpaste (euuch, I can only imagine the pain).. and some said to use a wet towel to cool* the burn. I don't know which methods work and not..
For the itchiness, euuccch, can only imagine. I'm like that too, whenever my skin's peeling, but not from burns, more like falls and cuts etc.. I'd have the tendency to peel it off too..
The aloe vera sounds like a good option, sure has cooling effects.

Okay, you did what I was going to suggest, that is, reapply the salve. I have aloe vera on hand all the time, hubby puts it on his face before he shaves and says it makes it go much better. I also make my own concoction of a healing oil/salve. I put equal parts lavender and melaleuca oil in with twice as much vitamin E oil, and then double that volume of pure coconut oil. I accidentally discovered last year that the tea tree and lavender tended to kill my cold viruses and heal me up quickly. It is a good topical, and it also helps when I have a sinus headache. Keep that skin moisturized with your good salve and you will be much more comfortable.

No, I don't want you mixing things. I just got inspired after reading about Thieve's Oil and reading some suggested homemade versions. They of course did not have Tea Tree oil available. I read about your salve a little. It sounds just fine.

I didn't think you did something "dumb," just a trifle clumsy (she spilled some reaaaaally hot soup while trying to serve me lunch, folks; she's my helper). Accidents happen. Shrug. I mean, I'm sorry you got burned! I don't mean to sound callous, & that sounded as if I was shrugging at your pain!
The only time I saw you do something I'D call dumb was that time when you were trimming the fig trees outside our ratty old rental house in East Austin, & you stood outside on the concrete steps asking me to bring a towel so you wouldn't bleed all over our oh-so-beautiful floor! When I saw you'd really done a number on your arm with that saw, I could've taken you by the ears & shook you for worrying about that slum-lord's old house! Had it been me, I would've RUN inside & grabbed a towel!
But then there was that time you accidentally cut your arm on the broken glass door in Mom's apartment building, & you never even mentioned it until after we'd gotten on the elevator down! And then you were brave as Rambo, letting the ER stitch you up sans pain killers since you were allergic...gah...! (s h u d d e r !)
I think I'm sensing a pattern, here...did your mother get frightened by a slice-'n-dice machine when she was pregnant with you, or what??
I'm just glad you're getting better! I sympathize with your itching dilemma, though. Kudos for not mitching & boaning about it; I would be!
I don't do pain well....
BTW, it wasn't the salve's being green that bothered me, essentially, it was that it was supposedly aloe vera, which has a fairly clear sap. I'm sure they added the darned green to make you think of aloe vera. Prob'ly more sell-able like that.
If you want to, add some of my cortisone cream to your arm. That should cut the almighty itch!

Hi ya ElicBxn
Your irritation could be caused also to the area being very dry or maybe you are allergic to the new stuff you are using.
I am always doing dumb stuff and usually share the stories with my friends so we can all have a laugh, brings a smile to everyone's faces even though it is always at my expense but hey, that's life I guess!

hi ElicBxn yes I have learned a burn on your arm can really itch. I did not do anything dumb but several months back my son was cooking a hamburger for him self, and had poured off all the oil, but left the burner too high, and the meat was sticking so the poured some back into that overheated pan, and kersplash he had second degrees all over one forearm. He did the cold water treatment but too little and too late. He also used something with Aloe in it and he thought perhaps he was allergic to the ointment. anyway he had to quit using it and oddly then it really healed much faster. So we still do not know if it was just the burn itself that itched so or the ointment, maybe he was allergic to it. Just because something is natural does not mean some people can not be allergic to it. I used a natural hair shampoo that made my scalp break out and I had to take it back to Whole Foods.

Hi, ElicBxn. I hope that your arm heals up. I think that the salve may be causing you to have an allergic reaction of some sort. I think that you should discontinue using it and talk with your doctor. Maybe he/she can prescribe you something that will help the burn to heal up perfectly. I hope that you will be okay. Take care of yourself.

I would think so, except that the salve is the thing that stopped it itching! It had gotten dry and I had to go dig the jar out of my bag to apply it. I'm terrible about using meds when things start getting better - even setting an alarm doesn't get my oral meds taken when I'm on antibiotics!

What u see is what u get w/me. If i do something dumb i just do it & go on & try not to do it again but no guarantee i want, lol. Glad your arm is getting better. When it itches like that i'd rub some more cream on it. wouldn't think it would hurt it at all.

Hey Elic! I am always burning myself just about everytime I
go near my oven and I also have a nice burn on my hand from
last week. I didn't have anything in the house to put on it,
which is unusual for me so I just used peroxide and am letting
it heal on it's own. It doesn't look that great, but at least
it isn't itching because as per your description that is the
worst! I also am nursing the bite I got from taking Luna to the
Vet Friday where they wanted to see if I could give him meds!
That didn't go too well because he clamped down on my thumb
with his fangs and bit as hard as he could causing blood to
spout everywhere! We are going back to the Vet tomorrow and now
I'm afraid to even try to put him in the carrier, but it is
necessary so I will have to take my chances! I have decided that
I need to get those thick gardening gloves to handle "my killer
cat"! I don't want to joke about it because he has been vomiting
almost everyday and I am terrified that that there is something
really bad wrong with him. Star's blood test came back ok, so
the ammonia urine smell isn't a kidney problem. But, they didn't
do blood work on Luna so back he goes tomorrow. Please pray
for my boy!

I've ended up at the hospital, TWICE, for cat bites. I still put those cats in carriers (if I could catch them)
trying looking into chain mail for catching cats with...
Gosh, tho, I hope Luna doesn't have anything seriously wrong, its good news about your Star - always good to try and get more water down them tho...

Burns are the worst thing! I got a burn from steam not too long ago on my hand and it hurt so much, I cried! I put it under cold water and put an icepack on it too but the moment I took the ice off it would burn again like crazy! It took hours to feel better, it was awful! I can relate to the itchiness too; I had a cut on my knee from a small surgery to stop an infection and as it healed it itched and itched and of course it was way too painful to scratch, it kept me awake at night…I would keep applying the Aloe Vera Herbal Savvy as instructed if I was you; aloe Vera is excellent for burns, hope it feels a little better...

Its actually amazing that it hasn't hurt that much - yeah, it hurt pretty bad when I did it, but within a few hours, it had stopped and then it only hurt when it
1 - got touched
2 - got hot (and we've had a hot couple of weeks here)
3 - got dried out
So, I avoided touching it, kept it cool and out of the sun and put my salve on it...

Elic-
I'm not sure how getting burned is an embarrassment regardless of how it occurred. It can be very serious! You are very lucky you didn't end up with a second or third degree burn! I can relate to the "itches" though, and it is definitely a sign of healing. Last year at the Ren Fest I neglected to re-apply my sunscreen and being in my belly dancer costume I was severely burned! It itched, hurt, and oozed for at least a good four weeks before it began to clear up enough to not cause me too much notice.
Aloe vera is your friend though, despite of its looks.
It is mother natures cure for burns. I went with the Solarcaine version myself because I needed the pain killer. I know that for serious burns they recommend doing saline washes to help cool the skin. It's a long process, but it will soon be over. And as you can tell, I'm not averse to speaking about my burn because hopefully someone will learn from my mistake.

oh trust me, I know how bad burns can get, I actually got a second degree sun burn in college! and boy did that hurt!
Yeah, I've had a few burns that I actually got an aloe vera on to and one, a pretty bad 2nd degree burn on a finger actually stopped hurting in a few hours and really never hurt unless it was pressed after that until it healed.
this was probably borderline 2nd degree, I put cold water on it, but since it was only about 2 inches long and an inch wide and it was Wednesday (my busiest day of the week) I couldn't do anything else about it then.
I have kept a close eye on it - well it is on the "top" of my right arm - so not so under my nose I can't see it...
a couple of the cats like the ointment, but they don't lick the sore! I'm honestly amazed at that...

Oh yeah! Been there, done that! I have indeed burned my finger from putting it in places it shouldn't ought to go. I've even done it twice in a row, and ended up wondering how I could have been so dumb.
My mother did something really, really, really D-U-M-B while she was mowing the lawn one time. Unfortunately, it was so serious that she HAD to explain what she did. It seems the grass she was mowing with a push mower was very thick and high, and the grass throwing outlet kept getting plugged. So, rather than shut down the mower, remove the plugged grass, and have to pull-start it again, she just reached down and grabbed the mass of grass,..... and damn near cut her finger off!! It took a ton of stitches and months of recovery before that episode was done. Makes me shiver just thinking about it!
