WOW. That's a lot of money. I guess it is less than paying the policy without government aid, but even so, it is too high. What is the price New Yorkers pay for health care out of pocket from Blue Cross/Blue Shield without the government aid I wonder? For hospitalization in Michigan it is about a thousand dollars a month per person from Blue Cross/Blue Shield; outrageous for most people who are not in a union or group. A small business owner was paying it, but had to quit paying the insurance for himself and his wife because he just cannot afford it. His business is too small for a group plan and his employees don't make enough to pay into an insurance plan.

At that price I would just get a catastrophic policy and pay cash at the doctor. I pay cash now.

If you want to see how free health care works, just ask me, I live in a country where it's our constitutional right to free healthcare, we just need a card to prove that we're eligible for it. I've had surgery in the past that would have cost quite a lot out of pocket, but thanks to the healthcare system, I didn't have to pay it. Up here, you have to pay for extra things like crutches, fiberglass casting and the like, but everything else is pretty much free. Elective surgery isn't, you have to pay for it, unless it's emergency surgery. But your hospital care is covered by provincial insurance. It can work, and it has worked up here for decades.

I am glad that you are happy with it. Who does pay for it? or do your doctors work for free?

Aw, now, Laglen, you're not being faaa--ir. You're asking for logic from a welfare recipient! Maggiepie "Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, & he will tell you the truth." ~ Oscar Wilde 1854-1900

I can second this. Our free health care is by no means perfect (the wait lines can be LONG...), but it is still great and has worked very well up here. I'd take it over the American system any day.

OK...so who ever said anything about "free" health care for everybody anyway? I can just imagine the uproar if it really was free! You didn't mention this was for people who had been uninsured for 6 months and who had preexisting conditions which kept them from getting coverage. I don't know all the details of this particular program but it doesn't sound as horrible as you may want to make it out to be. Annie

Annie, whatever I didnt mention is the reason for the link. And who said it was free? We actually started to get calls right when President Obama was elected from people thinking that things were going to change instantly. Once the bill passed, we started to get calls into our call center from people wanting to know if they were going to have 'free Obama care.' People are confused about what the bill means, and what's in it." See full article from WalletPop: http://srph.it/9y3mtD

The free health care is a joke. He actually expects Americans living abroad to pay into the system, but we can't use it if we need it. I'm not about to pay for something that I'm forbidden to use. Not that I would need it. I have medical care were I live. I buy travel coverage when I visit the States on holiday.
