Friends, I always try to share about traditions,
culture here in India and try to learn about others. As I have said in my earlier discussion, today is the last day of our holy month Sawan, today is full moon day, we call ‘purnima’, so today is ‘Sawan purnima’.
On this day sisters tie a thread on the wrists of brothers normally, this symbolizes protection to a sister from a brother. You can find thousands types of this thread, called ‘RAKHI’. The sisters feed sweets etc to brothers, brothers give cash gift, clothes, gold jewelry to sisters. So this festival is also called, ‘RAKHI-PURNIMA’.
But this is not limited to brothers or sisters, friends meet each other, tie this thread on each other’s wrists. So it is a festival of friendship rather. Many of my friends, my students came here, tied rakhi on my wrist. I am thankful to them.
I have sent rakhi by post to friends in India and abroad as a gesture of friendship.

hi professor that sounds so sp ecial a brother sister honoring. I wish we had something similar here. We have fathers day, mothers day, and a childrens day which I do not think is really celebrated much. that's
nice as it extends to friends you say. I can imagine you were really pleased at having your students honoring you with rakhi on your wrist. We do have Easter week when we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Hi professor, Yours is a country of such great traditions, thank you for telling us about yet another. In the west many of the old traditions have fallen by the wayside or have been altered so much as to be almost unrecognizable. I'm happy to know that it isn't the same everywhere. Blessings.

What a nice way to celebrate your many friendships. I appreciate you sharing about your culture here on MyLot. It is part of what makes the site special. I will also search and read online about the new names you have given to us, and see how much I can learn before next year.
