Making appliances limp along until I can afford a replacement.

The toaster oven that we got when we married in the year 2000, is only toasting on one side. So I toast it on one side, turn it over and do it again.
Our washing machine that is over 25 years old, my husband has duct taped it together and now I have to turn the water on and off or it stays on.
So do you have any appliances that need to be replaced or fixed? Are you contining on hoping to be able to save money to buy new ones or afford having them fixed?

Oh not only appliances, but our vehicles go through a makeshift fix all the time. Right now our dryer only dries on one setting and guess what??? It never shuts off..So I can NEVER leave the dryer running if I am going out.Even for a little bit, in case I don't make it back. So I guess about when the clothes are done and then go and open the door...
Other than that, everything else is working fine. A little inconvenient, but not as bad as some things..Like once I couldn't leave the washer because it wasn't draining properly and I had to hold the hose for it to drain. (Actually I believe it was more of bad installment on that one than anything) And our toaster now that I think about it, is getting to the point where I either have to flip or push the button twice to get a good toast..
Ugh...technology, can't live with it, can't live without it...

Well, we'll keep limping these things along until we get more money or we have to buy a new one. Glad I'm not the only one with limping appliances. Hopefully yours won't burn the house down and mine won't flood again.

we usually get a used one that is better than ours unless it is something like a toaster..If we had to get a dryer, no way could we afford a new one..Then once we get those appliances replaced, another will take it's place..

It's getting harder and harder to buy second hand because people are really, really holding onto big appliances now.

I rent so all we do is call the maintenance number and a guy comes out and fixes or replaces whatever it is. I rent because of this. I know that if something went wrong I couldn't afford to fix it. I have rented for many years. I have had homes in the past but left them to my husband when I left. We do need a micrwave though. Hopefully in a month or so I can get one.

When I was was younger, single, and the economy was great and had a wonderful job, I just called a repair man. But my husband does what he can and I do what I can to keep it going. I turn the water off and on since it's not going according to its design and he mans the duct tape as well as cleaning the filter.

Just be careful. Check on the dryer when it's going quite often to make sure nothing happens. When your daughter was born, what a lovely way to remember when you bought it, thanks and take care.

Something is going on with my cloths dryer. It still dries but it takes 2 or 3 cycles now for normal load. So I hang as many things as I can now and then just finish them off in the dryer to make them softer and get the wrinkles out. Also the seal on my dishwasher has come out. That is not a big expensive fix at least I don't think it will be, but I have been washing all our dishes by hand for the last 3 weeks. The dishes seem so much cleaner when do them, and I don't have to worry about stuff building up on them.

So you're coping. It's probably more important to get the dryer fixed first than the dishwasher from the sound of things. But hanging things out on the line probably saves you $. A seal could make a big mess if there isn't one on a dishwsher,I'll bet.

The only thing that we have right now that we are making limp along until we are able to afford a replacement is our hot water heater. The pilot light on it doesn't like to stay lit so every time that someone in our house wants to take a shower I have to go into the utility room and light the pilot so that the burner will kick on so that it will heat the water for us to take a shower. It is a pain in the behind, but right now we really just can't afford to buy another one. Oh, and on the brighter side of things, it is saving us money on gas because the pilot isn't always running.

Doesn't it keep leaking gas and isn't it an exposion or fire hazard? We had to replace one in our basement because I kept smelling gas and they couldn't find the leak.

Oh yes, sounds like me for sure. I've had my washer and dryer for 6 years, both were my aunt's and she'd had them for about 20 years! I've had to replace the dryer belt once is all. My coffee pot was 6 years old and just went last month, but luckily I had won a Walmart gift card in a contest on another site and it arrived that day, so I was only without a coffee pot for the one day and it didn't cost me anything for the new one!

I replace my dryer belt last year, too. 24 years old, I guess it can go. No cost coffee pot, good deal!

True, and the belt is a minor issue, so I wasn't too upset, especially since a friend replaced it for me, so I didn't have the repair man expense. Thank goodness for the free coffee pot, I can't handle too many days without a pot a coffee.

Used to be you could find 2nd hand washers and dryers, but everyone is holding on to things up here. I thought 25 years was a long time, but my repairman says 30, he knows someone with a 30 yr old washer.

There are a couple of things that I need to fix too. Need to fix the grills, fix some lights and replace some broken appliances too. Waiting for the right moment only. I have to say sometimes broken things work the most well at times. Hope you'll be able to get new fixtures soon aite..

I hope so , too, but given the next month we have 2 school taxes, two vehicle insurances and a house insurance, I wouldn't hold my breath.

My refrigerator, washer, and dryer are so old I don't even remember when we bought them. The washer has been making a lot of noise, so I don't know how much longer it's gonna last. The frig even has a rust spot on the inside of the front. Still running, but I have to keep my fingers crossed. We have no money to replace them if they go. I don't know what we'll do.
