My cats want to get fat for winter.

My cats want to eat all the time. How do I distract them? Right now they're sleeping, but when I move from the computer, they'll be right after me again!

I don't have cats at this time so don't know for sure why they are eating more. Do you think that maybe they need more fat to help them survive the winter when maybe they'll sleep a lot more. Are cats a bit like bears that store for the winter?

If they go outdoors they need it and they were outdoor cats, but they'll stay in for winter. They're a little like bears in that they sleep more. Longer cat naps. Nice to here from you again my new friend.

I guess if they sleep more they have less time to eat. Have fun!

Cats usually snack when they want to. If you feel they are eating too much I would just leave so much in their dish and when they have finished that they can drink water. I would be sure they have enough when you have several though. My cats always were outside cats and what I fed them was not all they ate. If they got hungry they went and caught a mouse.

I think they get to begging more when the weather is cooling off. I guess the websites I went to felt that butter was more natural for their systems than vegetable oils. This is really the first winter I have done anything. My cats do not seem to get fat, though. I have one that seems to WANT to be stepped on, then whines about it.

Good morning. I see you're both up early today. The early bird gets the worm. Thanks for reminding me G that I need to start adding some kind of fat. They do love butter and they'll eat mayonnaise (soybean oil isn't supposed to be that good for them). Funny, Creamy is always under my feet, too.

They get food 3 times and they're begging constantly. I can't feed them more, they're crystal kiddies and the doctors said to not let them get fat. One of mine can hunt, the other can only use one eye and one ear plus when he steals a mouse from the other one, he can't seem to figure out how to open it up. I've increased what they get at each time, but they still beg for more. I have to throw them out doors after they eat and keep throwing them out or they'll drive me crazy. Mine are in and out now, soon they'll be in all the time except to go to the bathroom.

You might ask the vet if there is a cat food that is filling. We only had one cat and she would eat generally once a day. It was a smaller bowl of food and I left it in a bedroom where I kept her bed and litterbox all the time. She never overate unless my husband would feed her lean, deli turkey.

Right now I am content without any animals. I am an animal lover but my carpets and house need a rest..lol We had one daughter's cat and dog for several years but had to have both of them put to sleep within a 1 1/2 yr. span. It broke my heart.

These are former wild domestic cats, they have it in their head that they have to stock up. I've got them on food that should fill them up, but they know it's fall and they still believe they're going to freeze if they don't get fat for winter. Gardengerty had an idea that might work above. Might be worth checking out in the event you ever do get a cat like mine, but I know, you don't want any more animals after this one,I remember. But things happen. Lots of people's kids go in the service and now they have their animals.

When you figure it out, let me know. The current recipe I use for their food says to put butter in it to help them get fat. They seem to feel cold even if they do not go out, at least mine do. My house is big and old and drafty. They seem more satisfied with the homemade food.

I had been told canola or olive oil by the vets to keep their coats from drying out in winter. I would think butter, since they're sleeping most of the day, would clog their arteries like with couch potato people.

My cats definitely eat more in the winter - I think that's normal. In the summer they are trying to stay cool, but in the winter they have to eat more to generate more body heat

Yours are probably outdoors. Mine are going to just go out to go to the bathroom and on sub-zero days, they're going to have a liter box, so they don't need to eat all day. I feed them 3 times a day now and they still want more food. We've upped what we feed them at each meal and they still want more food. HELP!

my cats are inside cats, granted we made a screened porch for them to go out on if they like, but they are inside cats, don't even go out to go to the bathroom

Many of yours are rescues. Both of mine are. They were outdoors for at least a year, I'll bet. I got the orange one before a sub-zero snap that he never would have survived with all his health problems. I understand them wanting to eat SOME more, but I can't afford them eating from morning until night. If they want to do that, they'd better kill mice before they come in the house.
