Do you think of onions as a condiment or a vegetable or a main entree?

In my family, onions are used for everything. My husband came from a family where they only use a little bit to flavor things. In my family, we use onions all three ways. A little to flavor, as a veggie, and as the main event. We put onions in most things, but esp. chili, sauces, and soups. We use it as a vegetable in stews and as a baked onion. We have it in sandwiches and onion soup at the main event (not both at the same time, one or the other usually). So how much does your family like onions? What ways do they use them?

I think of onions in lots of different ways. Sometimes as a flavouring, sometimes as an accompaniment, sometimes as a vegetable and sometimes almost as a condiment. I like onions in stews, casseroles, hot dogs/burgers and salads and I also like them in sandwiches or fried as a vegetable.

Love your name. I like onions all those ways, too. You're in the 700s now, how do you like Mylot?

I love it. I think it has kept me sane. Which considering what I've been through is saying a lot. Thanks for responding and take care.

Thanks lol...like your name too, especially the pun. Arrgh lol I didn't even notice how many points I'd got and not sure what they mean. I've been on MyLot for about 3 or so years but on and off. I quite like it sometimes yet not others. Depends on what there is to talk about. Do you like it?

I think of onions as an ingredient. I have never really just eaten onions as a side dish or a main dish. The closest I have come to that is probably onion rings. I do put onions in a lot of my dishes and therefore think of them as vegetables but as an addition to other dishes to make them more healthy by adding the onions.

So you've had them as an ingredient(word I think I was trying to think of instead of condiment) and as a side veggie for onion rings. But no main event yet. Well, 2/3 isn't bad. Thanks and take care.

Well I love onions if they are cooked and in butter placed on cooked pierogies things like that. I dont like to bite into a fresh onion at all. I think they have the worst taste unless they are cooked. I could never imagine sitting down and just eating a whole cooked onion or raw onion though lol. I dont suppose many other people would do that either. But I have seen deep fried onions although I have never tried them. I LOVE onion rings as well as my kids.

Ohhh I just thought of what the real name is for the deep fried onion I was talking about. Its called a blooming onion. You see them for sale at fairs alot. I bought my brother in law for one of his wedding presents a blooming onion maker. I dont like to cut up onions they hurt my eyes so what I do is buy them before I need them and freeze them then a few weeks later when I need them I take them out and chop them up frozen and they no longer make your eyes sore when cutting into them. Its easier as well to just buy a bag of frozen chopped onions. Its about $1 for a 16 oz bag.

About 2 years ago, maybe 3, we started having bloomin onions at our fair. I had one the first year, not bad, huge and couldn't finish it, but good. I don't have room in my kitchen for anything more, I don't even have room for what I've got. Frozen onions taste waterlogged to me. But that is a neat way to keep from crying!

Deep fried area lot like onion rings. I've never had pierogies with onions. I've really only had pierogies out at a fast food place or restaurant. I haven't prepared them myself or bought them from a frozen food section. I see them next to the ravioli and I end up buying that instead. I bet pierogies with onions would be terrific. I love mushrooms, but I hate mushroom soup. It's rare that a person likes something in all its forms so liking cooked, but hating uncooked onions is probably pretty normal and I think at least one person said that and another the other way around, likes raw but not cooked. Thanks and take care.

You know, considering that both my husband and I love onions, you'd think at least one of our kids would..But they don't. I use onions in just about everything, including scrambled eggs..(Oh, I am getting hungry now)I'll even eat them raw. I remember when I was a kid and my dad took care of my grandmothers garden for her and I would help out. During harvesting the green onions, my dad would clean one up for me and I'd eat it right there in the garden, it was awesome..:)

Wow Gerty, is that possible? I mean onions have layers unlike tomatoes and peppers..If it is possible, I'd love to know how, for I really love them..:)

I really, really love onions, and so does my family. We use them quite a lot when cooking: in sauces, as a side dish with meat, in salads... but the way I like it the most is raw and in a salad (as most vegetables, for some reason I don't really like them when they're cooked, but love them raw instead). I had never heard of onion soup, but it soudns really tasty as well!

You've never heard of French onion soup or just regular onion soup? Interesting. It's got the broth from pot roast, sauteed onions in the bottom, a slice of French bread and cheese melted on the top. That's the French onion one. Regular onion has beef broth or chicken broth and lots of sauteed onions. Not hard to make either one, but please don't use salty bouillion. Many people don't like French onion or regular onion soup because here really salty bouillion is used. Of course everything here is Americanized and that often means salt and sugar are added to just about everything, sometimes to the extreme.

Good that you like Fresh veggies, more vitamins that way as long as they don't come from very far away (like some of ours here do).

I'm not that much into cooking and such, so I'm afraid I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to different dishes... but that's what myLot is for, I'm learning a lot of things! :) Yeah, usually the vegetables I eat come from the town next to ours, so no problems with that :)

I have always used onions as a vegetable and for flavor. I put onions in almost everything. I don't just use a little, I like a lot of onions in recipes, sometimes I will add more than what the recipe calls for. Some recipes I use them cut small and some cut really big, some I just quarter the onion. I use it with most meats, in all stews, soups and chowders. I put them in salads, sandwiches, stuffing. I hate running out of onions, to me they are essential. I have never used them as the main dish, but would be interested in hearing how to make a main dish from them, other than onions rings, which I love.

So sometimes like an herb or spice as well as a vegetable. I think that's probably pretty normal. See page 2 of this discussion and look for a snail avatar, I have how to make French Onion soup as a main dish. No snails in it, that's just her avatar. It's just broth, onions and bread/cheese. Ways to make onions the main event: sautee a bunch of onions in either olive oil or butter or a little of both (my favorite) and then pour them over bread or toast (toast stands up better). A nice thick layer. Alternately, you can pour olive oil on top of onions and put them in a pan in the oven and cook until they look done to you. My onion sand which is just two slices of bread with a slice of a sandwich-sized onion (think onion like a beefsteak tomato) and then you need to decide what to put on the bread, mayo, salad dressing, olive oil and vinegar, honey mustard, etc. Whatever you want to put on it. But you need a sweet onion, not a really, really hot one. Happy main event onion eating. Let me know how you like them. Take care.

The snails I've had only tasted like garlic and butter. But I did want you to know that the snail was just an avatar. French and other culture recipes can have some unusual items in them.

Yum, that onion sandwich sounds good. I will have to try that. I love sweet onions thats mostly what I use in cooking. I like some dishes with raw onions, like mashed potatoes and raw onions and I use raw onion in sandwiches and mix them with other ingredients and of course I like raw onions on subs. I am going to go have a look at that onion soup recipe too. I love onion soup but have never found a good recipe for it and always have to buy it and I prefer homemade, that way I know what I'm eating as I don't like additives. I am so glad that there are no snails in it as I don't like them either., lol. Thanks, writersedge!

I love onions but have a husband who is not so fond of them. I do add them to chili and hamburgers. Haven't had an onion as a main course. I always looked at an onion as added flavor to many meals.

You use them as an herb or spice. For French people, they're everything. Think French onion soup. My Mom used to eat onion sandwiches all the time. I can only do that if the onion is a sweet onion, not a hot onion.

My husband can't have raw onions either, but he really doesn't care for the texture of cooked onions. What I will do is cook meat on both sides, then when they're almost done, put onions on top to keep the meat from drying out. Then when the onions are done, take it out, then take the onions off for me. Hubbie likes the taste the onions inpart and the moisture instead of a dried out piece of meat, he gets a tasty moist piece. I love French onion soup if I can find a low salt version, those high salt versions aren't good.

I guess I have always thought of an onion as a vegetable but how I use it is not very often as a side by itself. On occasion we will grill some onions as a side dish but maybe once or twice a year. Mostly I use in or with dishes. I love some red onion sliced in my salad. When frying potatoes I love to add some onions. I put 1/2 to 1 whole onion cut up in the crock pot when we do pot roast - gives a great flavor. I love onion rings but never have made them at home but do get them sometimes at a restaurant - the ones at fast food restaurants are terrible!!!!!!! I love a slice of red onion on my hamburger! I could go on and on, obviously I love onions but the rest of my family, not so crazy about them like me.

Hi. writersedge. I think of an onion as an condiment. It flavors my meal when I will cook with it. It also adds more flavor to any salads that I will make too.

We used onions as a vegetable. I love onion rings and always add a quartered onion to my roasts. I also add onions to beans and all manner of things. Carmelled onions are delicious with mushrooms on steaks. I do have onions on my hamburger. They are could for us too and we should eat more of them.

as all three although i have never had a baked onion. onion relish is fantastic and so are pickled onions in the condiment category, they go in salads as a vegetable, fried with peppers as another vegetables, to make onion soup and in most sauces. onions are brilliant.

I haven't had onion relish in forever. There is a Vadalia Onion relish this one Farmers' Market has, oh is it incredible! Now I wish I had money to go to Prey's Family Market. You've got lots of great onion uses. Baked onion is like sauteed onions if you do it like we do. We bake them until they're carmelized. Fried with peppers is great, we often have that with sausages.

I've had it at the fair, but I haven't made it. Something that big in that much hot oil scares the heck out of me. I thought it was wonderful. I don't remember the sauce, they probably asked if I wanted some and I probably said no. I'm not crazy about sauces I get at the fair. Some people are, but I'm not.

Mom put onions in just about everything, too, but I don't use them as much as she does. I'd have to say I use them as a condiment and also a vegetable. Roasts and stews are not the same without them. I'm not sure what you'd call onion rings but I like them, too! (The real ones, not the boxed ones from the store.)

Onions could easily be present at every meal in my house. I did not like them as a kid, but I like them both raw and cooked now. I feel that they have a lot of nutrition. Hubby and I both enjoy them.I like green onions and sliced onions and diced and minced onions. My son lives with us and says he does not like the texture of onions, although he does not mind the flavor. Of course he is changing and he periodically will take a fork full of something and look at it, and say "Look, I am eating onions." Actually I will just try to mince them extra fine and my son does not mind them in things. Somewhere I have a recipe called "Easy oven onion" that is a great casserole. Of course, Onion rings are heavenly.

I encourage people to try food they hated as kids because tastes do change. I hated sourkraut, but my Dad kept putting one bite on our plates. One night we all decided we liked it for a change. There was my poor Dad with a small can and he almost didn't get any. He had to start buying big cans so he could have some. So onions are an acquired taste in your family, interesting. They're good for blood pressure and all kinds of things. Thanks and take care.
