Despite being almost 60, having cooked since I was about 4, being a qualified home economist, having a degree in cookery and nutrition, running my own celebrationary cake business and bringing up a family of five hungry kids I suddenly find out I know nothing about cookery or food!! Why? My 14 year old son had just gone into year 10 at high school and is taking food tech for one of his GCSE's, on top of this he has a Saturday job at our local pub washing dishes, preparing veg etc - suddenly he knows more than me!!! I have to keep biting my tongue! So not only is he now 3"taller than his old mum - he's teaching me how to cook!!!!! KIDS!

Two of my kids thing they could run the world right about now. My two youngest, 12 and 14 think they know everything. Oh, how little do they now. I get tickled sometimes when they try to think they know more than my husband and I. We say, maybe we should just go back to school while you both work and keep the house. Oh, if it was only that easy!!!

I have to admit to thinking I knew more than my mum when I started cooking at school!! I do though remember teaching her new things as my cooking progressed so maybe he will be teaching me soon.

Quite funny oldchem, that children today are smarter than we think, I think. LOL.. I do not think he thinks that you do not know much about cooking, I believe because he learning to cook and feels that he has accomplished something it is because he feels that he has been taught by a teacher and does not see you as a teacher. Gosh I hope I make sense, but next time you cook dinner and he is licking his fingers in glee, you will see that he does cherish your wonderful cooking and would not think to have it replaced by anyone else.

Oh I certainly know he appreciated my cooking - I'm looking forward to sampling the profiteroles and chocolate sauce he is making today in school - that is if he hasn't eaten it all when he gets home!!

That is about the age that kids start knowing more than their parents. LOL I think it is great that he is learning about cooking though. Too many grown adults male and female know nothing about cooking. My kids are 10 and 3 and they are learning to cook already.

*lol* I'm sure that's not the only think he'll think you know nothing about. Good experience for him. Though I will say doesn't every teenager think their parent knows nothing about anything?

LOL, Aren't teenagers great? I have a teenage daughter who tells me how to do stuff all the time even how to behave. I have also been in the tech industry for over 20 years and my teenage son tries to tell me how to do things on the computer and will actually even debate with me. I am proud they feel confident enough to speak up and make good points, but I have to laugh when they question me especially when it comes to the computer.

Well look at all you have accomplished in life that is wonderful. I wish I could cook that well. Don't get me wrong I am a good cook and get compliments often but I'm not good enough to have my own cake business or anything like that. That is funny that your 14 year old now thinks he knows more about cooking then you do. He probably is a good cook because of watching you cook over the years. I am sure he doesnt realize that probably most of what hes learned has in fact been from his mother.

He's taught more about nowadays food and that may be the reason. However, nothing will win the more experienced person in cooking. Your experience will still empower you to cook better dishes :) Fret not!

Hi, Be it how smart is your son,I still believe you know more than him.It is because you are her mother and you have been in this culinary line for so long,definitely you have more experience compared to him. The different is your son may know more new things in cooking and both of you can work hand in hand in the kitchen to create new recipe for family to try out.

I've often wondered why we vote for older politicians and wait until people have finished university before regarding them as experts when teenagers know EVERYTHING! Of course, as he is expert at cooking perhaps you should hand over the kitchen to him and tell him you expect three meals a day, within budget, seven days a week, 52 weeks of the year...
@oldchem1 (8132)

Now why didn't I think of suggesting an all teenage government as they are all so knowing!!!!! As regard to handing over the food budget - we'd live like a king for a couple of days and then have starvation mode as all the money will have gone on ne X BNox games!!

Hi Oldchem, this situation happen to me too, my son is only 3 years old, and one day I am using a TV remote control and keep pressing it and I can't manage to control the TV. and there come my 3 year old son and he told me that I need to remove the sticker in front of the remote control that blocking the sensor. Things happen like this many time that out kids sometime learn faster that we do.
@oldchem1 (8132)

Mum, the age barrier is there, despite the fact we are experienced parents in our various fields of endeavour. I remember when my mother used to be a good cook. Suddenly my wife took over. I used to be a super soil tiller on the farm, my of barely twelve years old beats me roundly on the farm. One is bound to remember also that food ingredients develope day-by-day so also cooking styles. Between 60 and 14 is too great a generation. SamShima.

YOu cannot learn to make roses in one night that takes practice (I should add frosting for those who don't know!) her voed teached was taking a class that night and she wanted to be one up on him. I told her he wasn't going to be showing them tomorrow and guess what...I was RIGHT!!! He told them it was going to take time!

That is funny. My 13 year old daughter took about 3 months of horseback riding lessons and suddenly knows more than anyone else about horses. It is funny how they think that they know so much by doing just a little bit. Remind him that you are the one who has fed him for 14 years and he is healthy so you must know a little bit.

Lol, he is at the pedantic stage of cooking - sieving the flour before making pastry etc - I guess I've just got lazy in the kitchen!

This made me laugh. I'm not a teenager nor a parent. But I can relate with the part about teaching parents things they think they know. I do that with my mother all the time, especially when it comes to computers and cooking. My mom thinks she's really techy, but she wakes me up in the middle of the night to ask how to defeat zombies in plants vs zombies. My mom also thinks she cooks well, even though most of the family doesn't think so. So I end up telling her what works and what doesn't. It's all good though. She doesn't feel bad about me helping.
