Friends, today is Vijaya Dasmi, Durga Puja is over. The idols of goddess Durga are disposed off in rivers as per tradition. In the evening, there will be burning of big hollow statues, filled with fireworks of Ravana, you can read details about Ravana in : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ravana And watch a video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQPf3fr2s_8 A big statue, 100 feet high is being made on the bank of river Mahanadi near my home. We will witness this occasion in the evening. After that we will go to homes of close relatives to wish them HAPPY VIJAYA DASMI and DASHARA and there will be exchange of gifts. Any such function at your place? Please share. ‘HAPPY VIJAYA DASMI and DASHARA to all mylot members and friends!!!Professor

This is very interesting. In our culture we do not have statues of gods and goddesses. We do celebrate on some occasions with fireworks. We do gather with family for various holidays and we eat a lot of tasty foods. Many of us love to decorate for Christmas, some decorate for a lot of holidays. In a nearby town they have followed a tradition from another country, and have a giant goat, made of straw, some years. It is called a Julbok, but I do not know the significance of it

I like to watch this Ravana burning. I see it in he TV. In my childhood in my native place, on the day of BHOGI i.e. previous day of Sankranthi in the month of January, they use to burn a big artificial man figure made out of sticks etc. On the day of bhogi old things should be burnt and new things to be brought home. This is symbolic for that.

I hadn't heard of such a custom but it sounds real interesting. It sounds like a combination of some of the holidays we have here. I hope it's a really good day. So, Happy Vijaya Dasmi!
