A friend from mylot from abroad asked me via PM,
’What is Gurdwara’; instead of replying him, I share it here. I am sure it will be useful for all.
A ‘Gurdwara’ is a Sikh meeting place. It means “the house of the guru, the guru that is there is the Guru Granth Sahib. It is as a place of worship, school, meeting room, communal kitchen and place where weary travelers and pilgrims may rest and eat. A gurdwara building has usually four doors to show that is open to everyone, you should take off your shoes before you go in, you should cover your head and you will sit on the floor. It may be used for wedding or naming ceremony.
My city has four Gurdwaras, though I am not Sikh, I have many Sikh friends. For the first time I went to one Gurdwara, 30 years ago. I find the place so cool, it brings peace of mind. If I have time, I stay there for hours.
What about your place, do you have Gurdwaras? Where you go, what you do when you feel depressed or unhappy mentally? Please share.

dear professor,
id like to experience a cool place like that where i could find peace within body and mind and heart. but i want to stay for 3 days to a week at the most. would they allow foreigners to stay there like stay and sleep and wake up there?
during days when i am depressed, if not in the church, i just stay at home alone.. sleep, eat, cry then sleep again.. but it doesnt give me much peace although i am able to rest really well.

Hi, Prof.:0
I'm not sure if we have exactly the same place like that here in the Philippines.Maybe, there is no place like Gurdwara here but when people feel depressed or sad even problematic, they go to church to seek comfort and peace ... In there, they cried their hearts out to God.They even make sacrifices like walking on their knees on their way to the altsr to offer their final prayers...
There are many places we can saught comforts but a church is the more closer place to find one, being a Christian..:)

No, we do not have anything quite like that. There are houses of worship, and there are other peaceful and relaxing places that we can go. I do appreciate you sharing with us, many of us enjoy learning new things about the cultures all around the world. I think we all need places to go that will increase our peace of mind.

hi p rofessor I was trying to think and what I came up with here in the U S is some churchs that do have an open door policy where anyone can come day or evening to get advise or justsit and worship or what not.I often have walked into the chapel, sat down and prayed and just sat there and relaxed nobody bothered me. Now a lot of churches do not do that as I guess they are afraid of thieves or what not. seems odd for a church not to be open during the week.even our libraries here are more inviting than some churches.Your culture offers more religiously than
ours sad to say.

Have seen that word before on the Sikh temple around here but forgot all about it until your post. Have been in one too and love the communal spirit and teamwork that was going around.

My daughter has a sikh friend.I expressed my desire to take darshan of Gurudwara and she took us there. It was so calm and peaceful and I felt like sitting there for more time and enjoy the divine feelings there. Sikh's Guru Granth Sahib is kept in the middle of the Hall and I offered my respects in the manner I knew. Then I saw the community kitchen. It will be so nice to have a community eating which will enhance the unity among all the brethren. I saw this community kitchen in a TV serial where, if I am correct, they called it Sanja Chula. Sorry if I am wrong. I want to go to Gurudwara again and experience the divine spirit which will give peace to us.

That very interesting, just that I never heard that kind of place here in our country. Not even in my hometown. I guess that is because here in our country or hometown we dont have any Sikh. Maybe that is why we dont have that kind of place here in our country.
