So, I've recently started the endeavor of writing articles online. I've written about several different subjects so far and I intend to continue with the daily goal of writing one article each day. That said, it really got me to thinking about how other writers pick the subjects that they are going to be writing about. For me, I'm using Helium and I will spend time browsing their different titles to find something that is intriguing to me at the time. Share with me your process of picking a subject to write on.

I tend to write out recipes online, because the possibilities are quite endless. Once in awhile I will right an intellectual piece (would write them more often, but they don't earn very well, people want simple things to read)usually after I get inspiration from reading another persons article; I will write a lengthy comment(usually when I disagree, or strongly agree and have points to add) on an article, then I turn it into an article. Sometimes these ideas and theories just pop into my head once in awhile when I am thinking, and so it goes from there. Sometimes I just randomly get ideas and so quickly write an article; those are usually strange or humorous things.

What sites are you able to use where you are able to share recipes online? I have a lot of recipes that I would love to be able to share if I was making a little bit of money off of them.

Triond is the one I use the most for writing recipes, because most of my recipes aren't over 250 words and so are rejected on others; but, Triond accepts all recipes, short or long. And also what I like about Triond and recipes is that they are usually published within 5-10 minutes, if not 1-2 minutes; sometimes they will take longer to publish though, rarely. When I have a longer recipe, over 250 words, I will share it both on Triond, and then on Bukisa after. My methods for my other articles is to write them first on Triond, and if they also are eligible on Bukisa, I submit them there too, because you get more money for doing the same amount of work, as you are allowed to copy and paste your own original work onto Bukisa. Just though I'd share a little extra there :D. Good luck!

Sometimes an idea will be brought on by something on TV or the radio. Other times I will go to the library and browse the different books and a subject will come to me that I will research more or write about. I have even gotten article ideas here on mylot where someone asked a question and I found I had enough information to write a whole article on the subject. I actually wrote at article on Triond about finding things to write about. You can find it here if you are interested in reading it: http://writinghood.com/writing/how-to-find-things-to-write-about-when-you-cant-think-of-what-to-write-about/ I think you will find it helpful. I also like to write articles about places I travel to. Reviewing hotels, giving details and advice about what to see and do.

Those are all great subjects to write about. I know that I'm having a much easier time writing about those things that I know about as opposed to those things that I know absolutely nothing about.

I personally write for textbroker and select from the articles on their site. I enjoy it and is a reasonably lucrative PT job for me.

I intend to try to write some articles for textbroker as well, but I want to try to build up a portfolio first writing on the subjects that are really interesting to me.

I am trying to stick to the things that I know for the subjects that I am choosing to write on right now. In addition to that, however, I will sometimes pick topics that I would like to learn more about and research those and then write an article about it.

I use to have a weekly column for may years - well - at least ten years. The only piece of advice is this - if possible write about what you know and are familiar with. Of course, if it is something that has to be researched then be thorough. Make sure that the artice is grammaticaly correct and do not make the sentences too long or wordy in order to meet the required number of words. Best of luck

I am trying to write on those subjects that I am familiar with because it seems like those topics will just flow as I am writing the articles.

Well, I should like the topic first of all. It should tickle my imagination as well as my emotion for me to be able to write about it. Sometimes there are topics that are boring.

I definitely try to avoid the topics that I find to be boring because if I think a topic is boring, I have an impossible time writing an article.

Finding a subject that would appeal to many readers is difficult for me to do. I wrote a few articles on Hubpages and did well for awhile. My most popular article was about adoption. I made it brief and to the point. Thought little details would turn the readers off. Will follow your discussion here and see how others think of a new topic to write about that would appeal to readers.

I find that the majority of the articles that I write are brief and to the point as well. I think it is easier for someone to read something that is short but points out the major points than it is to read an article that just goes on and on.

I write for AC. Sometimes I choose from the article assignments they have. Other times I choose from life. My kids are a good source of inspiration. I have a 23 month old. I wrote a short article on "Binkies".

Is it difficult to get your articles accepted into AC? I ask because though I'm loving writing on Helium, I will probably want to expand my horizons sometime in the near future.

I have two methods of choosing topics for my articles now. When I'm on the move, I tend to write on something that is familiar or from the top of my head. It could be about a personal experience about a topic, or something I can brainstorm in a couple of minutes. I usually type this on my hp and later upload them onto the writing sites. But if I have a chance to do some research online, I'd attempt to research on a good keyword to write about. But the most important thing is that the topic must interest me a lot so that I'd be inspired to write about it quickly. In fact sometimes I can generate a couple of angles from a single topic if the topic interests me a lot! I have to write quickly too before my interest for that topic wanes, which often does and I'm left with lots and lots of unfinished writing drafts in my folder.

That's the flexibility we have now, when there is no pressure to write about things we don't like. I think this is how I became more interested in writing, and it did not start when I was in school either.

I can completely see why you don't have time to dedicate to the kind of writing that I am doing. I would be aiming at something that was further reaching and with more prestige if I had more education. I do hope to eventually go back to school, but that is on the backburner for me while my children are small.

Hi, may I ask how much you earn per article you write?
@dorannmwin (36392)
• United States
24 Nov 10
It depends. If you've earned writing stars you can earn 1-2.5 dollars per article up front and then they have a revenue share as well and that is where I am making the bulk of my money. The articles are averaging about .10 per month, but in the long run that all adds up.

I'm not really one to write topics as much as I write reviews for what I see and read. It just depends on what I read and if I feel like writing my reviews.

I do believe that reviews are an effective form of writing. However, I also don't really think that reviews are a form of writing that is appropriate for me.

i write on Factoidz. Most of my articles are on either dogs or Paganism because that what I know, but I also write on anything I want to learn about. I try to write at least one article a day. My topic decision comes alot from how much time I have and if at that moment their is something I wanted to learn about. When I'm in a hurry I write about a dog, if I have nothing that I want to learn about I write about religion and if I have the time and interest I do the research and write about something I want to learn all about. Good luck on your writing career!

I have been doing online writing too at different sites. The site that I keep most busy is "Review Stream". That's where one can write brief reviews on a variety of topics, things one comes across in the day-to-day activities, shopping, restaurants, movies, websites, travel, and so on, and get paid when the review submission is accepted. Writing is my hobby and I am enjoying that very much. Have a nice day !

I tried out review stream very briefly, but I wrote a review that I really did take a lot of time to write and it wasn't accepted so I got frustrated with it. I am, however, loving writing on Helium.

hi dorannmwin I keep intending to enter helium but get cold feet wondering if my writing is good enough to be accepted as I can usually think of topics. But can I smooth out my grammar and writing'so they will accept it? I am my own worst critic when it comes to writint when it counts like that. I usually think of things we all have in common whether its issues with school or work or families. But then I freeze thinking oh they will not accept this. So I am a wuss.

Good for you to start writing articles. I hear it can be quite profitable. I don't write articles so I can't be of any help. I have a hard time trying to come up with discussions on here (which is probably why I rarely start any). It seems like when I do come up with a good discussions I do a search for it and low and behold if someone hasn't started a discussions very similar to mine.

That is one of the things that I think is beautiful about writing articles. You don't so much have to worry about the fact that other people have written on the same subject and you are able to make something from everything that you write.

I am writing occasionally, for blogs usually.the thing that is most important for me to consider is that I am interested in the topic I am writing about :)

I do think that it is very important to know something about the subjects that you are writing about. Otherwise, I think that it is virtually impossible to write a successful article.
